198: Section 198
Why did 4079 have to die?
This is all my fault! Because I was worried you'd do something stupid again, I had 4079 follow you constantly just to prevent it!
I never expected you to do it anyway!
You actually killed your best friend just to help Charles!"
4068 was still trying desperately to deny it.
He firmly believed they had no evidence.
Jing Yuan felt utterly disgusted seeing this scene.
He tossed a tablet in front of 4068 and said, "Are you stupid? Both the Ecology Research Institute and the Navigation Control Room have surveillance!"
4068 glanced at the video, and the heart that had been hanging in suspense died completely.
On the Lighthouse, most places don't have surveillance. Although cameras aren't high-tech, they require a dedicated production line to manufacture.
So the cameras currently in use are patched-up leftovers from the old world; once one breaks, there's one less in existence.
The Lower Citizen District has no surveillance at all, and even in the Upper Citizen District, only a few important departments are equipped with it.
As a Dust Citizen, the places 4068 frequented most in the Upper Citizen District were the Law Enforcement Office, formerly run by Charles, and the Wasteland Hunters' Armament Preparation Depot.
And both of those places happened to lack surveillance.
However, the Ecology Research Institute and the Navigation Control Room, where the incidents occurred, happened to have it.
When the rebels revolted, they didn't care about surveillance issues.
And such a vital problem was something 4068 hadn't even considered himself.
When 4277 found something suspicious, she directly asked the staff to pull up the footage, and the truth came to light.
Seeing the mountain of ironclad evidence, 4068 was powerless to argue further. He looked at 4277 and said, "I hope to die by your hand!"
4277 pointed the gun at 4068, her eyes filled with tears.
Of her two best friends, one had killed the other. If she killed him, both friends would be gone.
But 4079's death was far too unjust!
Jing Yuan walked over and took the pistol from 4277's hand.
"Don't let someone like this dirty your hands! I'll do it!"
Jing Yuan pointed the gun at 4068 and looked at 4277, asking, "Do you want to step away?"
4277 shook her head. "No need!"
Jing Yuan said helplessly, "The difference between people has never been about genes!"
*Bang!*
The bullet struck 4068 right between the eyebrows.
Watching 4068 fall, Jing Yuan felt a wave of emotion.
Even though 4068 had backstabbed him, he had been willing to give him a chance.
Unfortunately, he didn't cherish that chance.
A single wrong thought leads to eternal damnation... Upper level of the Lighthouse, Morgan's residence.
At this moment, only Morgan was here!
Jing Yuan slowly walked into the residence.
Hearing the sound, Morgan knew what was coming. He turned his wheelchair and looked at Jing Yuan.
"You've come!"
"City Lord Morgan!" Jing Yuan looked at him. "Is there anything else you need to say?"
"I only hope you can preserve these last remnants of humanity!"
"Rest assured! My goal is to resolve the mana ecology and restore the human world. Naturally, I will protect this last group of humans."
"Good."
"I've seen the archived files! I don't want to repeat the things you did to implement the three great laws, so you must leave this world!"
"I understand! Do what you must!"
"Stop!"
A roar came from behind. Jing Yuan didn't need to turn around to know it was Mark.
Mark ran over, blocking the way. "Jing Yuan, Charles is already dead. City Lord Morgan is an old man; he can't do anything anymore. Why can't you spare his life and let him live out his final years in peace!"
Jing Yuan looked at Mark calmly. "Whether it's Charles or Morgan, they are the spiritual totems of the privileged class. If he doesn't die, that group of lazy Upper Citizens who only want pleasure might gather again to cause trouble! Should I kill him, or wait for them to revolt and then kill a bunch of Upper Citizens?"
"Too many people have died already."
"Then one more won't matter." Jing Yuan looked at Mark. "I've already made a mistake once!"
Mark stood before Jing Yuan, having no intention of backing down.
He also knew that without Morgan's presence, Charles alone couldn't have attracted so many people to this rebellion.
Morgan was the primary reason the City Defense Force could be turned so quickly.
But the consequence of doing so was the total slaughter of the City Defense Force.
Mark knew Jing Yuan was right; as long as Morgan remained, anyone wanting to rebel in the future could cause trouble under Morgan's banner.
Jing Yuan wasn't afraid, of course, but another group of people would die when that time came.
"What are you doing?"
An old but powerful voice came from behind Jing Yuan.
Mark looked up; it was actually Instructor Elon.
Jing Yuan never turned his head from start to finish because he didn't need to look to know the situation behind him.
Elon looked at Jing Yuan and said, "Jing Yuan, could you give Morgan and me a little time?"
Jing Yuan nodded indifferently.
Elon patted Mark on the shoulder and said, "Every generation has its mission. I know you have the ability to lead the Lighthouse forward, so I'm leaving the Lighthouse and Mark to you!"
After Elon finished speaking, he handed Mark a tablet and said, "Child, don't carry a psychological burden!"
Jing Yuan looked at Elon, seemingly guessing what he intended to do.
Jing Yuan didn't expose it; instead, he and Mark retreated outside the room.
Elon pulled a flask from his pocket and faced Morgan with a smile. "I originally thought you could handle this transfer of power properly, but I didn't expect it to turn out like this."
Morgan sighed. "I didn't expect it either."
"Since things have come to this, let's leave it to them! People as deeply sinful as us should have died long ago..."
Morgan looked back at everything he had done in his life. Was it right? Was it wrong?
There was no conclusion.
Morgan just reflected for a moment, not wanting to give himself any definitive judgment.
"Have a drink!"
Morgan smiled and took the flask, taking a sip. Then Elon took it back and also had a drink.
Outside the door.
Mark looked at the tablet Elon had given him; on it was a file.
Report on the Action to Purge Organizations Opposing the three great laws.
One of the items was:
Investigation and Disposal of City Defense Force Commander-in-Chief Red Egret.
Executioner: Elon.
Seeing this line of information, Mark's eyes widened in disbelief.
At that moment, Mark finally understood what Elon meant by "don't carry a psychological burden."
Mark pushed the door open and went inside, seeing Elon lying on the floor and Morgan slumped in his wheelchair.
Neither of them was breathing.
Elon didn't want a rift to form between Jing Yuan and Mark because of Morgan, which would trigger a new round of internal strife on the Lighthouse, so he took action himself.
In his view, the things he did back then were sins, and this was now his atonement.
Soon, news spread that both Morgan and Instructor Elon had died of illness.
Only a few people knew the truth.
Morgan, Charles, and their old subordinates nearby had all passed away.
