63: Section 63

Jing Nan looked at Morgan; it seemed he intended for Charles to succeed him.

"A pity..." Morgan shook his head and sighed. "This is also my fault; I led him down this path myself. He is overly obsessed with power and lacks the magnanimity to embrace others; he cannot take true talent for his own use. I don't feel at ease handing the Lighthouse over to him."

Jing Nan thought to herself: Does he not want to pass the position of City Lord to Charles?

Jing Nan tentatively said, "But he is your son, after all!"

"This isn't the old world. For the survival of the Lighthouse, such a relationship is insignificant. Whoever can lead the Lighthouse into the future is the next City Lord."

Jing Nan probed again, "Do you have another candidate in mind?"

Morgan looked at Jing Nan, nodded, and said, "What do you think... of Mark?"

"Mark!"

Hearing the name, Jing Nan was shocked at first, but then slowly began to understand.

Mark was very capable and had become the Wilderness Hunter Commander at a young age; under his command, the Wasteland Hunters almost always returned fully loaded.

Mark's strength and reputation were on par with Charles'.

However, Charles' followers were all from the Light and Shadow Society; to put it bluntly, most were useless.

But Mark's followers were all warriors who could go to The Surface and fight Phage Beasts.

Charles' reputation relied on the pressure from the Law Enforcement Office and the Law Enforcers.

Mark's reputation came from every piece of supply the Wasteland Hunters brought back to the Lighthouse.

If Jing Nan were to choose, she would also choose Mark.

Jing Nan had a major question in her mind; she asked Morgan, "If you choose Mark to succeed you as City Lord, what about Charles?"

Chapter 64: Arranging Her Pregnancy

Morgan seemed to have thought about it long ago; he said calmly, "Mark can tolerate Charles."

Morgan answered a question Jing Nan hadn't even considered.

Mark could tolerate Charles; in other words, Charles could not tolerate Mark.

Everyone could see these things clearly.

Why did Charles target Mark everywhere? It was because he was worried Mark would steal his position as the heir.

"No! I mean, will Charles be willing?"

"Even if he's not, there's no other way! I've given him chances!"

Jing Nan didn't understand. What did "no other way" mean?

If Morgan really wanted Charles to be City Lord, he could just announce it.

Mark would certainly have no objections.

Morgan looked at Jing Nan and asked a question: "Jing Nan, do you think I'm doing the right thing?"

Jing Nan was startled and didn't know how to answer. How could she dare to judge Morgan's right or wrong!

"I just don't understand."

Morgan still hesitated, fell silent for a moment, then slowly said, "If Charles succeeds as City Lord, he won't tolerate the existence of someone like Mark, whose strength and reputation both exceed his. For any ruler, this is a major taboo! Power is not a toy, nor is it unchanging! To stabilize his power, his optimal choice would be to get rid of Mark!"

Emotionally, Jing Nan could not accept this scenario Morgan hypothesized.

After all, as the Wilderness Hunter Commander, Mark had great merit, high reputation, and strong ability. To get rid of him just because he threatened one's position would be putting the cart before the horse!

Rationally, eliminating all threats is the only choice for those who pursue power.

Jing Nan gathered her courage and asked, "Lord City Lord, if I may be so bold. If you truly wanted to pass the position to Charles, what would be wrong with sacrificing one Mark?"

Morgan's expression didn't change much. Since he called Jing Nan over to discuss, he naturally intended to let her know some things.

"Mark cannot die! He is our hope for solving the ecology and reclaiming The Surface!"

Jing Nan's hand shook in fright, and a chess piece fell to the ground.

Mark cannot die!

Was Mark that important? Just because of his strong personal ability?

Jing Nan had a mountain of questions in her head, but she couldn't ask Morgan directly.

She knew her place; if Morgan was willing to speak, she would listen, and if he didn't, she wouldn't ask.

By this point in the conversation, the matter had reached a conclusion.

Since Mark couldn't die, the only option was to make him City Lord.

If he became City Lord, he wouldn't make things difficult for Charles; Charles could even remain the Leader of the Light and Shadow Society and a high-ranking official of the Lighthouse.

But then, the initial question remained: would Charles be willing?

Jing Nan knew Charles wouldn't be willing, but that wasn't something she could control.

Since Morgan sought her out, he must want to hear her stance.

But Jing Nan couldn't say something like "choose Charles" or "choose Mark."

She could only say, "Lord City Lord, no matter who is chosen as City Lord, this person must be able to lead the Lighthouse forward! Lead us to defeat the ecology and reclaim The Surface! For the great goal of human survival, any sacrifice is worth it."

Morgan looked at Jing Nan with a hint of relief in his eyes.

This was exactly the statement he wanted.

Everything he, Morgan, did was for the great goal of human survival.

This record would be written into the history books!

After finishing the conversation with Morgan, Jing Nan's mind was still in a daze.

Mark was going to be City Lord!

This position was actually going to be his!

However, in the end, Morgan didn't explicitly say how to handle Charles.

Her younger brother was no pushover!

He would absolutely not agree to Mark succeeding as City Lord!

She didn't know what kind of bloody storm would follow on the Lighthouse... Inside the Light and Shadow Society Cathedral, Charles stood alone in front of the Wall of All Souls.

Fan Lü walked up from behind and said to Charles, "Lord Leader, an informant reports that Jing Nan went to see the Lord City Lord again today, and she went to the City Lord's residence."

Charles naturally didn't know what Morgan and Jing Nan talked about. No matter how powerful he was, he couldn't arrange for an informant to eavesdrop in Morgan's study; he could only monitor Jing Nan's movements.

"What on earth does this woman want to do? Yesterday she went back to see Morgan behind my back. And today again!"

"Our secret control over the reconnaissance intelligence... she probably reported it to the City Lord," Fan Lü stated her deduction. "Early this morning, several people from the Navigation Control Room were transferred from their posts! Now the entire Navigation Control Room is filled with Jing Nan's people!"

"Hmph!" Charles was somewhat angry. "What exactly is she trying to do!"

Although Jing Nan was Charles' sister in name, she didn't choose to help Charles; instead, she chose to help Mark.

At this moment, Charles had decided to purge Jing Nan from the core circle of power.

"Notify Melissa to repeatedly arrange for Jing Nan to enter the Hall of Dawn. Get her pregnant as quickly as possible!" Charles planned that once Jing Nan was pregnant, he would send her to rest during her pregnancy, and the power of the Navigation Control Room would become vacant.

By the time Jing Nan returned after giving birth, the world would have changed.

"What about the male? Who should be arranged? Arrange for Jing Yuan for all of them?"

"Since he wants Jing Nan, then arrange for him!"

"But..." Fan Lü hesitated.

"What is it?"

Fan Lü said, "Previously we arranged for Penny and Jing Yuan to go to the Hall of Dawn three times, and Penny didn't get pregnant! I'm worried this Jing Yuan's ability is lacking and he might not be able to get Jing Nan pregnant."

Charles hesitated for a moment. "Arrange for Jing Yuan a few times first; if it doesn't work, switch to someone else!"

"Switch to whom?"

"Anyone, preferably someone with a high success rate!"

"Yes!"

Jing Nan was naturally unaware of Charles' series of arrangements and plans.

Later, Jing Nan bathed and changed her clothes, and headed to the Hall of Dawn.

Even at this moment, she still believed it was because she had reached the right age and it would be too late if she didn't bear children now, so the Breeding Mission at the Hall of Dawn had to be arranged.

The Hall of Dawn was sacred and solemn!

The golden lights further displayed an unquestionable authority.

Inside the Hall of Dawn, under the gaze of two Law Enforcers, Jing Nan took off all her clothes and changed into a grey robe.

As one of the high-ranking officials of the Lighthouse, even during a Breeding Mission, Jing Nan could not be watched by men, so the surrounding Law Enforcers were all women.
