442: Take advantage of the situation and escape
The battle over there seemed extremely fierce; even a kilometer or two away, everyone could feel the commotion.
Gradually, giant figures began to appear above that forest.
Without exception, those figures all spread their massive wings under the moonlight, their sharp claws reflecting a cold gleam.
These were Mutated Birds of Prey, ranging from a few meters to tens of meters in size, currently launching a fierce attack on an unknown enemy below.
Above the tree canopy, a massive head suddenly emerged.
"What is that thing... a bear?"
One person pointed at the enormous head, his voice trembling and full of disbelief.
It's worth noting that many trees in that forest had mutated, often reaching dozens of meters high, with hundreds of meters not uncommon.
To show its head from such a forest, it either had to be able to fly...
Or its height exceeded one hundred meters!
Yet, they had never seen such a creature until now.
Even those powerful Mutated Birds of Prey only reached dozens of meters when their wings were fully spread.
But this fellow, which seemed to be a mutated bear, must have revealed its head purely by its inherent height.
People watched as the Mutated Birds of Prey continuously attacked the giant bear, yet caused no significant damage.
However, the giant bear also couldn't threaten the Mutated Birds of Prey because these feathered beasts were simply too fast.
At this moment, someone suddenly said:
"They're fighting; shouldn't we take this opportunity to escape?"
These words made everyone around them change their expressions slightly.
It had been a week since they were trapped here, and everyone was fed up with the oppressive feeling of being penned up.
Yet, even so, facing these ferocious Mutated Birds of Prey, they couldn't take a single step away.
It seemed only within this small town would the Mutated Birds of Prey temporarily leave them alone.
"Quickly inform everyone; we'll leave together. This might be our only chance!"
Upon hearing this, everyone immediately turned to inform the others.
Within five minutes, everyone had gathered at the edge of the town, their eyes filled with a longing for freedom and life.
The leader was the man with the hideous scar on his neck. He glanced at everyone and said loudly:
"Follow me. If those feathered beasts discover us, follow my commands for everything!
If it really doesn't work, we can return here and think of another way. Understand?"
Everyone expressed their assent, then followed the scarred man out.
They tried their best to move slowly, constantly looking around, as if observing something.
Suddenly, a figure flashed in the night. The scarred man leading the group immediately produced a longbow and shot an arrow at the figure.
The arrow flew swiftly, like a streak of light, hitting the figure in the night sky.
A pitch-black Mutated Creature fell to the ground, flapped its wings a few times, then became still.
"Keep moving, follow me!"
The scarred man waved his hand, ignoring the Mutated Creature on the ground, and continued to advance in a certain direction.
This was a Mutated Bird used for alarm; it had played a part in their previous failed escape attempts.
The two-hundred-person team slowly advanced, and the scarred man leading them shot down several more of the same creatures.
His timing was incredibly precise, like a sophisticated instrument, without any errors.
Meanwhile, the battle in the distant forest continued; they even saw giant black swords smashing down.
Even from such a distance, they could feel the terrifying power of those black giant swords.
However, their hearts grew even more excited, because they were now approaching the furthest distance they had previously attempted to escape.
With a 'snap', the man leading the group shot down another warning Mutated Bird, letting out a soft sigh of relief.
His recent shots seemed easy, but they consumed a great deal of energy.
"Recover, rest in place."
He issued the command to those behind him, then pulled out a bottle of magic potion and drank it directly.
At the back of the team, a pot-bellied man plopped down on the ground, complaining somewhat:
"What are we waiting for? We should just rush out!
Those feathered beasts are fighting someone; they definitely won't have time to bother with us."
But his words immediately drew many glares, and a Girl with a hint of heroism reminded him:
"You haven't contributed anything these past few days except eating. Either you go clear the path, or you shut your mouth and follow quietly.
If it weren't for the captain's rich experience, there's no way we'd have this many people left."
There was a hint of mockery in the Girl's words, but no one found her words unpleasant.
Because they also knew that the Girl was right.
In this team, most people were doing their best to maintain the team's stability, but there were always some lazy people.
For example, the man in front of them.
The man was choked by her words and didn't dare to retort, only let out two dry laughs before falling silent.
But when he turned his head, he met a pair of venomous eyes.
It was the Mutated Creature nearby that the scarred man had just shot down.
"What are you looking at? You look down on me too?"
A surge of anger suddenly welled up in the man's heart. An Ice Cone suddenly appeared in his hand, and he fiercely stabbed it towards the creature.
He aimed for the beast's eyes; he wanted to deny it the chance to look at him!
But his movement immediately drew the attention of those around him, and several people's faces instantly changed.
One person immediately rushed forward, tackling the man to the ground, while simultaneously restraining his hand, which was still trying to cast a skill.
"Are you crazy? This is the captain's skill; it can temporarily trap an enemy's every movement.
This effect will be dispelled if it's attacked; you'll get everyone killed!"
The man was also a bit stunned after being restrained.
However, the skill he had thrown was now about to hit the Mutated Bird.
At the critical moment, an arrow, whistling through the air, struck the Ice Cone, shattering it into countless fragments.
The arrow then embedded itself in the ground, its trembling fletching seemingly conveying the anger of the one who shot it.
"You, come here."
The scarred man's voice was somewhat cold, causing the man pinned to the ground to tremble involuntarily.
He looked at the other party and said with a trembling voice:
"I'm sorry, Captain, I didn't mean to... I..."
"It's alright. You'll stay by my side from now on.
For everyone's safety, you have no choice."
Hearing the captain's words, the man breathed a sigh of relief, then eagerly scurried to follow him.
He just didn't see the hint of killing intent that flashed in the scarred man's eyes as he withdrew his gaze.
He was a recognized good captain, but definitely not some soft-hearted person who treated everyone equally.
For team members who followed commands and were willing to share hardships, he was absolutely willing to do his best to help them.
He had even put himself in danger to save teammates before.
But if there was a rotten apple in the team, he wouldn't mind finding an opportunity to eliminate this unstable factor.
"I'll keep you for now. Whether you live or not depends on your luck."
