364: Individual Final
Yang Qi quickly caught seven or eight of this group of over ten Yellow Sea Bream.
However, a commotion soon broke out not far to the left. Yang Qi turned to look and found many Anglers standing up to see what was happening.
He also stood up to take a look; it turned out an angler over there had hooked a big fish. Judging by the bend in the rod, the fish wouldn't be small, likely weighing over twenty jin.
Sure enough, there were plenty of people with better luck than him. If he didn't have his Supernatural Ability, he might not even be able to compare to their leg hair.
Some people are born with a "Koi" constitution, having better luck than others in everything they do. This sort of thing simply cannot be envied.
It seemed he needed to work harder, or he might very well miss out on the championship.
But when Yang Qi sat back down and looked at his fishing spot, he found that except for a few small Rockfish, there were basically no fish left.
"Forget it, mosquito legs are still meat!"
A Rockfish weighing less than half a liang probably wouldn't even register much on the scale. However, following the logic that it was better than doing nothing, Yang Qi cut some shrimp meat and began fishing for the small Rockfish.
Fishing for Rockfish required no technique; once these things bit the bait, they wouldn't let go. Other than not adding much weight, they had no other drawbacks: the meat tasted good, the price wasn't cheap, and they were easy to catch.
"Hmm? It looks like a school of Chub Mackerel has arrived. These are good; they bite aggressively and weigh much more than Rockfish."
Yang Qi was a bit happy to see a small school of Chub Mackerel arrive. These fish looked very similar to Blue Mackerel.
They were spindle-shaped, with pointed heads and thin tails, cylindrical in body, with greenish-blue backs and silvery-white bellies. They could reach over a meter in length.
Furthermore, Chub Mackerel fed voraciously. March to September was their peak season. During this time, they usually appeared in large schools and were a relatively high-yield species in China's offshore waters.
Yang Qi immediately abandoned the small Rockfish, quickly changed his bait, and cast toward the Chub Mackerel.
This was a small school of about twenty to thirty fish, each weighing around seven or eight liang.
"Go for it! Get 'em in!"
As he cast his rod, the Chub Mackerel rushed over to fight for the food. Yang Qi flicked his wrist and quickened the reeling with his left hand.
Soon, a Chub Mackerel was pulled up by him.
"Hehe, not bad, just under a jin. It'll be great for making spicy fish chunks back home."
This school came suddenly and left just as quickly. Just as he had caught about ten of them, the school fled.
Moreover, they swam toward the other Anglers. Yang Qi had no choice but to watch helplessly as others caught fish one after another.
For the next half hour or so, Yang Qi only caught a few small Rockfish. This situation was unexpected.
However, if the fish didn't enter his spot, there was nothing he could do. He could only wait for the next wave of destined fish.
"Hmm? This is a Jewfish, just under a jin. Not bad, not bad! It'll make top-tier fish soup back home!"
At that moment, the fellow angler to his right said happily.
Yang Qi, who was so idle he was scratching the back of his hand, turned to look. Sure enough, a plump Jewfish was struggling on the hook.
The Jewfish had a large head and a small tail, with its entire body being dark brown. It was known as the "Master of Underwater Camouflage" and often inhabited the mud and sand on the seabed. If it lay motionless in its nest in the mud, it was indeed very difficult to spot.
The meat of the Jewfish was firm and sturdy, the belly was elastic, and the flesh was shaped like garlic cloves and chewy. At the same time, it was delicate, lustrous, and had no hidden bones.
Due to being high in protein, low in fat, rich in nutrients, and delicious, it had high edible value.
Wild Jewfish, depending on their size, were priced at around 20 to 40 yuan per jin. Among low-to-mid-range seafood, it was considered a relatively delicious existence.
Seeing his neighbor catch a Jewfish, Yang Qi also turned to look at his own fishing spot and began searching carefully.
Sure enough, he discovered several motionless Jewfish in the mud and sand.
Yang Qi immediately cast his line over there and soon caught two Jewfish weighing about half a jin each.
"As expected, some beauty needs to be discovered by oneself."
Just as Yang Qi was feeling happy about catching the Jewfish, he suddenly felt his rod sink heavily, the tip almost being dragged into the water.
"Holy crap, lucky me, it's a big Sea Bass!"
His spirits were instantly lifted. He gripped the rod tightly with both hands and began to struggle against the Sea Bass.
The surrounding Anglers were also drawn over, turning their heads to watch. In their hearts, they secretly began to cast jinxes:
"Whoops, let it get away."
The big Sea Bass was very strong, constantly pulling at the rod. Since he was fishing from the shore, Yang Qi had been using a thin, soft rod.
This kind of soft rod felt great for fishing, but landing the fish was incredibly slow. There were over two hundred meters of line in the reel, so the chance of the fish escaping wasn't high.
However, he couldn't just pull it in directly. After a fierce struggle, the big Sea Bass finally began to lose its strength.
Yang Qi took the opportunity to speed up the reeling, and a huge Sea Bass was pulled out of the water. The crowd let out a chorus of gasps.
This Sea Bass weighed a full twenty-five or twenty-six jin. Yang Qi was extremely excited; it shouldn't be smaller than that Green Grouper. This might be the largest fish he caught today.
He knew that with this Sea Bass, his chances of winning the championship in this fishing competition had greatly increased.
He carefully placed the Sea Bass into the fish guard and then, full of confidence, continued to guard his fishing spot, looking forward to the arrival of the next surprise.
For lunch, they still ate the box lunches provided by the Competition Committee. Yang Qi, Bai Xue, and Zhang Jun ate together.
"You guys even brought your own food? You can take a few more box lunches here."
Zhang Jun couldn't help but say as he watched Yang Qi take out several large lunch boxes from his fishing box.
"It's embarrassing to take too many!"
Yang Qi said somewhat helplessly.
It wasn't that the box lunches weren't tasty, but they simply weren't enough to fill them. So, he had brought a pot of Braised Beef and a pot of rice from home in the morning.
Even two Zhang Juns couldn't keep up with Bai Xue's appetite, let alone Yang Qi's.
"Hehe, it's a good thing you guys have a high income. An average family couldn't afford to feed people who eat as much as you!"
Zhang Jun teased.
Yang Qi and Bai Xue didn't care about Zhang Jun's banter at all. Instead, they increased their eating speed.
"Hubby, there was an angler next to me this morning who caught two big fish weighing ten to twenty jin!"
Bai Xue said with some concern.
"Let him be strong, for the breeze brushes the hillside; let him be fierce, for the bright moon shines over the great river."
Yang Qi said nonchalantly.
"We also caught two big fish weighing about twenty jin. At the very least, we're evenly matched!"
Only then did Zhang Jun and the other relax, nodding repeatedly.
"So, how did things go for you two?"
"I caught a few Groupers weighing four or five jin; altogether, it might be around twenty jin or so,"
Bai Xue said.
Yang Qi had always believed that Bai Xue had a bit of a "Koi" constitution; her luck was always better than his.
"I might have a bit less, under twenty jin. Luckily, I ran into a small school of Sea Bass, but it's still a bit more than the Anglers next to me."
Zhang Jun also shared his situation.
