450: Permanent private ownership
"A-Jun and the others are eating at Xiao Qi's place. They invited us over. Are you going?"
Yang Limin asked, waving his phone.
"I won't go. If you go, make sure to drink less."
Zheng Jin rolled her eyes at him.
"Don't worry, those lightweights can't do anything to me. No pressure at all."
Yang Limin said with a smug look. Then he got on his electric scooter and rode toward the Sea View Villa.
When he arrived, he saw Zhang Jun and the others gathered around, watching Yang Qi breaking down a Tuna.
"Uncle is here! Sit, sit, sit. Dinner will be ready soon."
Zhang Jun and the others quickly pulled Yang Limin to the seat of honor. Everyone took their seats, and once Yang Qi finished slicing two large platters of sashimi, dinner could begin.
"What are we drinking?"
Yang Qi asked, pointing to the tu long wine, moutai, and red wine displayed on the dining room cabinet.
"I have a limited tolerance, so I'll have some tu long wine with Uncle!"
Zhang Jun was the first to speak. The others all chose tu long wine based on their tolerance, while only Liu Yao, who had the worst tolerance, wanted red wine.
Chen Sheng and the other two were a bit reserved and didn't speak up.
"How about the four of us have some moutai first?"
Yang Qi noticed Chen Lin's eyes kept glancing toward the moutai, but since no one else mentioned it, he felt embarrassed to speak up.
"Let's start with one bottle each! We'll open more if it's not enough!"
Yang Qi suggested.
"Yang Qi, don't joke around. We don't have that kind of tolerance. It's moutai; let's just open one bottle and share it among us."
Chen Sheng said.
"Cousin, why are you being so polite at my house?"
"It's not that. The three of us can only handle about half a catty at most. Any more and we'll be drunk."
The three of them hurriedly said to Yang Qi.
"Alright then, let's open three bottles first. Drink as much as you can, and I'll take the rest. Anyway, no peer pressure, just drink as you like!"
Yang Qi didn't say more and cracked open three bottles. Then he poured drinks for everyone.
On his father's side, Zhang Jun was responsible for pouring drinks for everyone, and Liu Yao also poured himself a glass of red wine.
Since they were all acquaintances and knew each other's tolerance, they all toasted Yang Limin together, and then everyone just drank at their own pace.
During the meal, everyone asked Zhang Jun about his Chinese New Year in Canada.
"Sigh! Everything else was fine, it was just too cold. Didn't my Maternal Uncle-in-law buy a big farm over there? Tsk tsk, the resources there are truly abundant. You can go hunting and fishing."
"Let me tell you, I went hunting with the workers that day. Real guns, I tell you! You probably won't believe it, but I'm a natural-born marksman."
"Hahaha, you have no idea. The first time I went into the woods, bang bang, two shots and I killed a Red Deer."
"I'm not bragging, but if it hadn't been so cold, I could have bagged another one that day..."
...Everyone sat quietly listening to Zhang Jun talk animatedly for half an hour.
He spoke with such passion and gestures that everyone felt a sense of yearning as if they were right there with him.
"Yang Qi, I think you should really consider buying a seaside farm over there. You should know, the land there is freehold. Once you buy it, it's yours forever."
"You can do what my Maternal Uncle-in-law did—buy it and hire people to manage the farm, then visit whenever you have time."
"If it's by the sea, it'll be convenient for you to go out fishing. It won't interfere with your main business. If you ask me, the only downside is that winters in the Northern Hemisphere are just too cold."
"If my family's businesses weren't all in the country, I'd want to go too. But I'll probably consider buying a piece of land in the future."
Yang Qi was a bit tempted by Zhang Jun's chatter. Owning land that belongs to you and can be passed down through generations—the temptation was undeniably great.
Thinking about it carefully, having a place that truly belonged to him on the far side of the ocean seemed quite attractive.
Besides, he wasn't planning on starting a company, and with his money piling up, he really didn't have much to spend it on.
This is definitely something to think about in the future!
"Alright, we'll talk about this later. Everyone, eat and drink your fill tonight!"
Yang Qi and Bai Xue exchanged a look, and he spoke up quickly.
And so, the atmosphere of clinking glasses and lively conversation returned to the dinner table.
Two hours later, the lively gathering finally came to an end. Since everyone had been drinking, driving was out of the question.
Liu Yao made a call and summoned a few people to drive them and their cars back. After drinking tea for another half hour, Chen Sheng and his two companions insisted on riding their electric scooters back.
Yang Qi thought for a moment and simply asked Bai Xue to drive, and the two of them took the three home. The electric scooters had to stay behind for them to pick up the next day.
"Dad, I'm going to take them home first. Why don't you stay here tonight?"
Yang Qi said to his father.
"It was just a little bit of alcohol; I'm not drunk. I'll ride the electric scooter back in a bit."
Yang Limin said.
"I know you're not drunk, but you can't drive after drinking. Either sleep here or get in my car, and I'll take you home."
Yang Qi stuck to the principle of "don't drive if you drink, and don't drink if you drive."
"Fine then, I'll take your car back!"
His father had no choice but to compromise.
Bai Xue drove his father home first, then went to Chenjiaping to drop off the three cousins.
On the way back home, Yang Qi asked Bai Xue:
"Xiao Xue, what do you think of Brother Jun's suggestion tonight?"
"You mean buying a farm in Canada? I think it's quite good, but it would require an on-site inspection."
Bai Xue said after thinking for a few seconds.
"I think so too. The main attraction is the permanent private land. We'll look into it when we have time."
Yang Qi nodded and said.
"If it's about private land ownership, it's not just Canada. There are actually many places, like Australia, some European countries, and even some island nations that sell islands or land with permanent private status."
Bai Xue corrected him.
"There's such a thing? I really didn't know."
Yang Qi said curiously.
"Yes, there are quite a few in Asia as well, and even more if you consider permanent usage rights. Even in our country, there are small islands for sale that only offer usage rights."
Bai Xue said as if it were common knowledge.
"Really? Even in our own country? That's really eye-opening."
Yang Qi was indeed having his eyes opened.
"Of course. There are so many uninhabited islands of all sizes at sea. The state can sell some of the less important ones to private individuals."
"However, they only sell usage rights, so you can't do things like mining. But they can be developed into tourist resorts."
Yang Qi realized:
"Oh, I see what you mean. It's similar to buying a commercial apartment; you have usage rights for a certain period."
"Of course. Land in our country is under public ownership; any citizen only has usage rights. That's a basic national policy."
Bai Xue said as a matter of course.
