1: Chapter 1: The Whole Family Suffers Misfortune
The good news is that Wang Lin has Awakened.
The bad news is that my entire family are Calamities, and I am the only human.
This all started late one night three days ago.
When Wang Lin awoke from a daze, strange memories were forcibly flooding into his brain.
As a transmigrator, he quickly accepted reality.
Isn't it just transmigration? Anyone could do it!
Ash Town. The Era of Calamity.
Father Wang Dashan, mother Li Xiulan, younger sister Wang Xiaoyue.
In the original owner's memories, this was a home that, while not wealthy, was warm.
Father was taciturn but hardworking, mother was gentle and considerate, and his sister was lively and cute.
What a standard template for happiness.
Until that night.
Wang Lin was startled awake by a faint rustling sound.
He quietly got out of bed, pushed the door open a crack, and happened to witness the scene downstairs.
Father Wang Dashan was tying up a person with rough hemp rope.
It was a middle-aged man; his eyes were covered by a black cloth, his mouth was stuffed tight with a rag, and he could only let out muffled whimpers.
And younger sister Wang Xiaoyue, the girl who had two dimples when she smiled, was crouching in front of that person, drooling.
"Dad, are you done? I'm so hungry!"
"Eat quickly, don't let your brother find out." Wang Dashan's voice was low and calm.
"Great! Dad is the best!"
The scene that followed made the blood in Wang Lin's body almost freeze:
Wang Xiaoyue's delicate little face split open from the center.
Then, her entire face expanded outward, turning into a massive maw filled with circular, sharp teeth.
Her neck elongated, and the giant maw came down from above, engulfing the entire person.
"Gulp—" a soft sound.
Not chewing, but a kind of swallowing.
The bound man disappeared, as if he had never existed.
After a while, Wang Xiaoyue returned to her normal human face, raised a hand to wipe the corners of her mouth, and rubbed her belly with satisfaction.
"Finally full. As expected, humans are the most delicious!"
Wang Dashan looked at his satisfied daughter and said, "Alright, not hungry now, are you? You can hold out for a few more months."
He patted his daughter's head: "Try to improve your strength as soon as possible; always eating humans isn't a long-term solution."
Wang Lin's fingers gripped the doorframe tightly, his nails sinking into the wood.
Calamity.
This word suddenly surfaced from the depths of his memories, carrying the scent of blood.
In the common knowledge of this world, Calamities are those monsters that feed on humans.
They lurk in the darkness, disguising themselves as ordinary people.
If a Calamity doesn't eat humans for a long time, it will lose its sanity and turn into a killing monster.
And his father and sister were actually Calamities?
Does his mother know?
If his mother knew, what kind of expression would she have? Would she be scared to the point of fainting?
Footsteps came from the stairs.
Mother Li Xiulan came out of the kitchen holding a glass of water, looked at the two in front of her, and said: "Finished eating? Go to sleep early after you're done, don't wake your brother."
"Got it, Mom!"
Wang Lin's heart sank to the bottom.
It's over, the whole family is wiped out.
He was the only normal one in the whole family.
Just then, Li Xiulan seemed to sense something and suddenly looked up,
Her gaze accurately fixed on the second floor, in the direction of Wang Lin's room.
Wang Lin abruptly pulled his head back, leaned against the wall, and his heart pounded wildly in his chest.
[It's over! Was I discovered?]
[Am I, f*cking, still salvageable?]
[Just transmigrated and it's a hell-mode start? Are you playing with me?]
Downstairs was quiet for a few seconds.
Then, Li Xiulan's puzzled voice rang out: "Eh? Why is Xiaolin's door open?"
At this moment, father and sister both looked intentionally toward Wang Lin, seeing that the door was open a crack.
Wang Xiaoyue revealed a look of anticipation, her tongue unconsciously licking her lips.
Li Xiulan said: "I'll go up and check."
Footsteps began to move toward the stairs.
Wang Lin's mind went blank.
Was he discovered? What should he do now? Direct conflict?
He had just taken over this body and knew nothing about the so-called "Calamities."
One against three; let alone the fact that the opponents are Calamities,
even if they were normal humans, his win rate against three people was basically zero.
[Ding—]
A cold, mechanical voice sounded in his mind.
[Detected that the host is facing a survival crisis; Awakening program forcibly initiated.]
[Congratulations to the host for Awakening.]
[Awakening Sequence: Number 0.]
[Ability: Infinite Evolution.]
[Ability Description: You can evolve your own life form by consuming others.]
Wang Lin was stunned. What the hell?
Sequence: Number 0?
In his impression, sequences should start from 1 and then be arranged backwards. What the hell is this "0"?
Although he had Awakened, Wang Lin didn't feel the slightest joy.
Awakened are extraordinary humans capable of fighting against Calamities; they are the spark of hope for humanity in the apocalypse.
But when the whole family are Calamities, the status of an Awakened is no longer a blessing, but the most dangerous death warrant.
The footsteps had stepped onto the second-floor corridor.
What to do?
Just Awakened, ability unknown, and there are three Calamities of unknown depth downstairs.
Can he win? Can he escape?
Kill, or not kill?
Li Xiulan stopped outside the bedroom door.
Wang Lin could hear her steady breathing; it was too steady, not like a mother who had just witnessed her "daughter eating."
The door was pushed open.
The room lights were not on; it was pitch black.
Wang Lin closed his eyes, lying face up on the bed, struggling to control his breathing frequency, trying to imitate the state of deep sleep.
Li Xiulan walked to the bedside and stood quietly for a while.
Then, she bent down, leaned close to Wang Lin's face, as if carefully listening to his breathing.
Wang Lin could feel his mother's gaze landing on his face, a gaze carrying scrutiny, inquiry, and even a hint of greed.
The room was very quiet; he heard the sound of his mother swallowing saliva.
The next moment, a pair of cold hands reached toward his cheeks.
Wang Lin's muscles tensed instantly.
Should he act? Now?
But he knew nothing about "Infinite Evolution"; could he kill a Calamity in one strike?
If he failed, what if he alerted the father and sister downstairs?
While thinking, Li Xiulan's hands didn't land on his face.
Instead, they grabbed the edge of the quilt.
Li Xiulan gently pulled the quilt up, covering Wang Lin's shoulders, her movements as gentle as every night in his memories.
"You don't even cover yourself properly when sleeping," she said softly, her voice filled with familiar doting, "You'll catch a cold."
After speaking, she withdrew her hand, turned around, walked out of the room, and gently closed the door.
The footsteps gradually faded away, going downstairs.
Wang Lin still kept his eyes closed, listening to the conversation downstairs.
"How is the child?" It was Wang Dashan's voice.
"Asleep, sleeping very soundly."
"That's good. It's late, let's all sleep."
"Mm, good night."
The house fell back into silence.
Wang Lin opened his eyes in the darkness, staring at the mottled shadows on the ceiling.
They didn't know he had already Awakened.
They also didn't know that he had seen the scene of his sister eating a human.
