26: Chapter 26 Alone
"Damn, they're suicidal."
"The Wild Wolf people cherish their lives; our people aren't afraid of death."
"If a real fight breaks out, we can manage a two-for-one trade."
Wang Lin nodded.
"Where is your leader? Why are you the one calling the shots?"
Deputy Leader Su Muqing's gaze dimmed.
"The leader is injured."
"Three months ago, Commander Leí Héng led his men to ambush him in the Mist Forest; he barely made it back alive."
"He's still recovering, so I'm managing the group's affairs for now."
"Is it serious?"
"He won't die, but he won't be able to fight for the next six months. So, I have to be the one to take revenge."
Wang Lin looked at her but didn't ask any further questions.
"If Commander Leí Héng dies, what will happen to the people in Wild Wolf?"
Deputy Leader Su Muqing froze for a moment, then her eyes slowly brightened.
"It would be chaos."
"The four squad leaders under Commander Leí Héng all want to be the boss."
"Once he's dead, they'll definitely start infighting and won't be able to care about anything else."
"Plus, with Zhou Lie already dead, they're already down one man."
She suddenly stopped and stared at Wang Lin.
"You mean..."
"I'll kill Commander Leí Héng," Wang Lin said. "You deal with the others. Once Commander Leí Héng is dead, Wild Wolf will fall apart on its own."
"Are you so sure you can kill Commander Leí Héng?"
"He's a LV3 Blade God with ten times your combat experience."
"Plus, he has at least five or six elites with him, all of whom have been injected with serum."
Wang Lin didn't speak; he simply raised his hand.
A blue flame ignited in his palm, and at the same time, several Wind Blades appeared behind him, whistling as they rotated in the air.
Immediately after, dark red veins appeared beneath his skin, and his muscles swelled slightly.
These were signs of the Disaster form, but they only appeared for a split second before receding.
Three types of power, flashing and vanishing in an instant.
Deputy Leader Su Muqing's pupils constricted.
She had seen it clearly.
Fire, Wind Blade, and that terrifying physical enhancement.
"You... what on earth are you?"
"Regardless of what I am, anything that can kill Commander Leí Héng is a good thing."
Deputy Leader Su Muqing ignored Wang Lin's quip and nodded.
"Fine. I'll cooperate with you."
She stood up, walked to the wall, and pointed at the map.
"We've been tracking Commander Leí Héng's movements for three months."
"He leads a team into the Mist Forest three days a week, and the route is roughly like this..."
Her finger traced across the map, marking out several red lines.
"He has at least ten people with him, half of whom are elites injected with serum."
"Even if you can kill him, you won't be able to withstand a siege by that many people."
Wang Lin looked at the red lines and suddenly asked, "When is he going into the forest again?"
"Tomorrow."
"According to our pattern, he'll lead a team to the Mist Canyon in the west tomorrow afternoon."
"A LV3 Mist Beast has appeared there recently, and he wants to hunt it for its beast crystal."
Wang Lin nodded.
"The western canyon..."
He stared at that location on the map, his mind racing.
Deputy Leader Su Muqing looked at him and asked, "You want to make your move there?"
"Yes."
"The terrain there is complex, which makes it easy to set an ambush, but Commander Leí Héng is very familiar with it. He won't fall for a trap easily."
"I don't need him to fall for a trap; I need you to lure his men away."
Deputy Leader Su Muqing narrowed her eyes. "How?"
Wang Lin pointed to the entrance of the canyon on the map.
"You make your move here and feign an attack on the Wild Wolf group."
"You don't have to risk your lives. Just fight for a bit, then run and lure them toward the east."
He moved his finger to a narrow pass deep in the canyon.
"Commander Leí Héng won't chase you; he'll take his core subordinates and continue heading inside."
"But the group you lure away will at least reduce the number of people by his side by half."
"It's impossible for all those serum-injected elites to stay behind."
Deputy Leader Su Muqing stared at the map, thinking for a few seconds.
"And then?"
"Then, leave it to me..."
Deputy Leader Su Muqing looked up at him.
"You alone?"
"Yes, alone."
Deputy Leader Su Muqing was silent for a few seconds, then suddenly laughed.
"You're a fucking lunatic," she said.
But there was a glint in her eyes.
Wang Lin ignored her and simply stood up.
"Tomorrow afternoon, at the canyon entrance, when you make your move, I'll know Commander Leí Héng has arrived."
With that, he turned and walked out.
As he reached the door, Deputy Leader Su Muqing's voice came from behind him:
"Wang Lin."
He paused.
"Come back alive. If you die, my little sister will cry."
Wang Lin didn't look back. What did her sister crying have to do with him? He wasn't her mother.
He pushed the door open and walked out.
...
The next afternoon, Mist Canyon.
The mist was much thicker than at the camp, so dense you could barely see your own hand in front of your face.
The air was filled with a damp, fishy stench.
A dozen figures were approaching the canyon entrance.
Leading them was none other than Commander Leí Héng.
He was wearing a dark grey combat suit today, with that long blade strapped to his waist.
Twelve men followed behind him, all of them tough and capable.
Among them, seven were Awakened or Disasters who had been injected with serum, two at Level 2 and five at Level 1.
The remaining five were all battle-hardened veterans.
"Leader," a Level 2 subordinate approached, "The canyon is just ahead."
"That LV3 Mist Beast is inside. Someone saw it with their own eyes three days ago."
Commander Leí Héng nodded. "Be careful. That thing won't be easy to deal with."
They continued walking forward.
They had only walked a few dozen meters when a sharp, whistling sound suddenly broke through the air ahead.
A dozen sharp arrows shot out from the mist, heading straight for their faces!
"Ambush!"
Commander Leí Héng was the fastest to react; his long blade unsheathed in a flash, cutting three of the arrows in half.
His subordinates behind him also reacted, some blocking with their weapons and others dodging.
But two people were still hit, falling to the ground with muffled groans.
"Who's there?!" Commander Leí Héng roared.
Footsteps came from the mist, followed by a light chuckle.
"Commander Leí Héng, long time no see. Do you remember me?"
Commander Leí Héng's eyes narrowed.
"Deputy Leader Su Muqing."
He waved his hand. "Chase!"
Seven or eight men immediately rushed out, chasing in the direction the voice had come from.
Two of them had been injected with serum, and the remaining five were ordinary people.
Commander Leí Héng stood where he was, not moving.
Four people remained by his side, all elites among elites: two Level 2 Awakened and two Level 1 Disasters.
"Leader, how are the people from Wildfire here?"
Commander Leí Héng was silent for two seconds, then suddenly laughed.
"Luring the tiger from the mountain. That woman, Deputy Leader Su Muqing, wants to lure my men away."
"Let's go. Don't worry about her; let's keep moving inside."
"I want to see what she's trying to pull."
The five of them continued walking deep into the canyon.
After walking for over ten minutes, a narrow pass appeared ahead.
There were steep stone walls on both sides, with only a two-meter-wide passage in the middle.
Commander Leí Héng stopped and stared at the pass.
"Something's not right."
As soon as he finished speaking, someone walked out from the pass.
Young, with black hair, wearing a black combat suit with a dagger tucked into his waist.
Commander Leí Héng narrowed his eyes.
"Wang Lin?"
"It's me."
Commander Leí Héng stared at him for two seconds, then suddenly laughed.
"Alone?"
"Alone."
