86: Chapter 86 The Night Watchmen Take Action
The Earth Element wall was very high, over two meters, very thick, and very hard.
That person went around the side of the Earth Element wall, continued running forward, and did not look back.
He knew that this Earth Element wall could not stop that monster, but it could stop Wang Lin.
Even if it only blocked him for a second, it would make Wang Lin run slower than him.
The person who runs slowly is the monster's food.
This is the law of the jungle: either you die, or I live.
If there is a tiger chasing you, you don't need to run faster than the tiger; you just need to run faster than the others.
That person had this exact mindset.
He didn't need to be faster than the monster, he only needed to be faster than Wang Lin.
If Wang Lin died, he could live.
One Earth Element wall in exchange for one life—it was worth it.
Wang Lin looked at the Earth Element wall that had suddenly risen before him, and his eyes turned cold.
He stretched out his right hand and spread his five fingers.
Tentacles emerged from his palm; it was a Tentacles covered in sharp spikes.
The Tentacles instantly pierced through the Earth Element wall.
Wang Lin's figure squeezed out through that hole.
But the Tentacles did not retract; instead, it suddenly extended like a rope and wrapped around that person's ankle.
That person was running for his life.
He felt his ankle tighten, lost his balance, and fell to the ground.
He looked back at Wang Lin, his eyes filled with fear and anger.
At this moment, Wang Lin didn't have time to absorb his Superpower.
The Tentacles whipped backward violently, flinging that person up and sending him flying toward the direction of the monster behind.
He screamed, waving his arms, trying to grab onto something, but he couldn't grab anything.
His body flew further and further, higher and higher, getting closer and closer to that monster.
The monster was about to grab that LV5 person from Miracle Company.
Just then, a figure was flying towards it.
Its hand stopped; it no longer reached for the person from Miracle Company, but instead reached out toward the person flying over.
Its fingernails pierced into that person's body, entering from the chest and coming out through the back.
That person's body stiffened violently, and then he died.
His body hung on the monster's fingernails like a piece of meat hanging on a hook.
The monster retracted its hand and brought that person to its mouth.
Its mouth opened.
It took a bite of the person's head; with a snap, the sound of a shattering skull rang out.
Then it began to eat—one bite, two bites, three bites.
That person's body disappeared bit by bit into its mouth.
Then, the monster's body began to change.
The Wind Ability swirling around its body disappeared.
It was replaced by another power.
A faint, earthy-yellow glow radiated from its body, like a thin mist.
Its Speed slowed down; it was no longer outrageously fast as before, but instead became steady and heavy.
Its fingernails were also covered in a layer of earthy-yellow light, becoming harder and thicker.
It had eaten that Esper with the Earth Ability, so now it also possessed the Earth Ability.
Everyone watched this scene, their faces pale with shock.
Their eyes were fixed solely on that monster.
It was eating people, inheriting Superpowers, and growing stronger.
With every person it ate, it grew a fraction stronger.
With every fraction it grew stronger, it stepped one step closer to being invincible.
With every step closer to being invincible, their hope of survival grew a fraction slimmer.
Wang Lin watched the monster, his brows furrowed tightly.
This monster must be something left over from before the Great Cataclysm.
It could actually absorb others' Superpowers, just like him.
Could his own Superpower be related to the Great Cataclysm?
But that monster seemed to only be able to possess one Superpower at a time.
The new Superpower overwrote the old one.
At this moment, the LV6 Night Watchers running in front also noticed this situation.
He breathed a sigh of relief: "It's fortunate that it can only possess one Superpower; otherwise, it would be troublesome."
Everyone else noticed it too.
Some began to accelerate, wanting to put some distance between them while it was still adapting to its new ability.
The monster just got slightly accustomed to its power before it started chasing them again.
It leaned its body slightly forward and kicked off the ground with both feet; the ground cracked beneath its feet, and gravel splashed everywhere.
Although its Speed was not as fast as when it had the Wind Ability, it was still not slow.
Everyone ran into the town.
Gray stone walls flashed by on both sides, and black iron gates closed behind them.
The monster followed them inside; the Earth Ability made its defense even stronger.
It smashed open the iron gate.
The iron gate instantly twisted, deformed, and flew off before it.
It knocked down the stone wall.
The stone wall was like building blocks before it, collapsing, shattering, and scattering all over the ground.
People get tired, but it did not; everyone was running for their lives.
Just then, a voice came from the roof ahead.
"Old Zhang, why are you in such a sorry state?"
The LV6 Night Watchers running at the very front looked up and saw three people standing on the roof.
The same black overcoats, the same Night Watchers uniform.
Old Zhang looked up at them: "Night Owl, Cold Cicada, Ink Crow, you still have the mind to watch? Why don't you come over and help!"
The three people on the roof exchanged glances, then laughed.
Night Owl jumped down from the roof.
Cold Cicada and Ink Crow also jumped down, standing on either side of Old Zhang.
Four people, four LV6s, stood in a row like a black wall, blocking the monster's path.
The monster stopped.
Its mouth opened, revealing two rows of sharp teeth, and it let out a low hiss.
Night Owl did not look at the monster.
He looked at Old Zhang, his lips curving slightly: "Old Zhang, you ran for so long just to lure this thing to us?"
Old Zhang's chest was still heaving violently, his breathing rapid: "If... if I didn't lure it here... were we supposed to let it eat us one by one?"
Night Owl laughed.
He shifted his gaze from Old Zhang and landed it on the monster: "That's fine. After eating so many people, it's time to pay it back."
Cold Cicada did not speak; he pulled his hand out of his overcoat pocket and let it hang by his side.
Ink Crow did not speak either.
He crouched down, pressed his hand to the ground, and closed his eyes.
His fingers spread slightly, as if listening to the sound of the earth, or as if searching for something.
Then he opened his eyes: "Its Earth Ability was eaten from a LV4 person."
"It's not strong. But its own physical body is very strong, at least LV7."
"Watch out for its claws; those ten fingernails are sharper than knives."
Night Owl nodded, his gaze falling on the monster: "I'll hold it back; you guys deal the damage."
He moved.
Night Owl's body left an afterimage in the air, like a bolt of black lightning.
He appeared behind the monster, his right hand formed into a palm, palm facing forward, and pressed it onto the monster's back.
There was a black mark in his palm.
The mark lit up for a moment, then dimmed and merged into the monster's black skin, as if nothing had happened.
The monster turned around violently, its fingernails swiping at Night Owl.
Night Owl did not dodge.
The moment the fingernails touched him, his body turned into a mass of black mist.
The fingernails passed through his "body" without touching anything substantial.
