Chapter 120 Your last act of showing off was pretty good.
Shen Pianran's mother opened her mouth, wanting to say something, but swallowed it back, just staring blankly at her daughter.
Shen Pianran did not look at her mother, nor did she look at anyone else.
She was looking at Chen Ang.
What welled up in those eyes was relief, a very quiet confirmation.
She was confirming whether, when Chen Ang said those words, it was as a friend, or as something else.
With things having reached this point, the dinner naturally ended on a sour note.
Shen Pianran was pulled to the entrance by her parents to be questioned in hushed tones, while Chen Ang walked out first, leaning against the stone lion at the entrance of Jinlu Restaurant to light a cigarette.
The early winter sun was not strong, casting no warmth upon him.
"Mr. Chen." Mr. Zheng pushed open the glass door and walked out, standing beside him, pulling a pack of soft-pack Chunghwa cigarettes from his pocket and offering one.
Chen Ang waved his hand, gesturing to the half-smoked 1916 in his hand. Mr. Zheng didn't mind, retracted the cigarette, and didn't light one himself, instead twirling it between his fingers twice.
"Let me say a few words, don't mind me. Pianran has always been the most capable since she was young; her efforts and achievements do not allow her man to be mediocre. And the class structure in this society is real."
Mr. Zheng scrutinized Chen Ang, attempting to discern some clue from Chen Ang's calm face.
Chen Ang smiled but said nothing.
Mr. Zheng did not give up and continued, "You have no job, no social status, and your level of cognition is not on the same level as hers."
He put the cigarette in his mouth, pulled out a S.T. Dupont lighter, toyed with it for a moment, and chuckled.
"Pianran saying she would support you was a joke; you shouldn't take it seriously. True common language must be built on a similar foundation of cognition."
With a snap, the S.T. Dupont lighter emitted a crisp metallic sound, and a flame appeared. Mr. Zheng lit his cigarette, took a light puff, and then slowly exhaled.
He stared at Chen Ang, "Mr. Chen, you can understand what I'm saying, right?"
Waiting for his performance to end, Chen Ang flicked the ash onto the stone slab at his feet, nodded, and said, "So, Mr. Zheng, what are you trying to express?"
"I want to say that you are not worthy of her."
The nearly 1.9-meter-tall Mr. Zheng looked down at the 1.8-meter-tall Chen Ang, his eyes full of the arrogant posture of a superior.
"Heh..." Chen Ang smiled, pressed his cigarette butt onto the base of the stone lion beside him, looked up at Mr. Zheng, and said, "You mean I just don't have money. I should be inferior, and a toad shouldn't dream of eating swan meat, right?"
"That's about the gist of it." Mr. Zheng did not deny it. He revealed a hint of a smile, gestured with his right hand holding the cigarette, and said with the air of someone pointing out the lay of the land, "Money isn't everything, but you can't do anything without money."
Chen Ang shook his head and laughed, saying in a low voice, "Mr. Zheng, regarding this issue, I knew it before I was twenty; you don't need to teach me."
Mr. Zheng's smile froze; he wondered if he had misheard.
He looked at Chen Ang with a puzzled gaze, wanting to see where Chen Ang got his confidence and where he got his courage.
A car horn sounded, and a silver-gray bentley Continental GT slowly slid into the temporary parking space at the entrance of Jinlu Restaurant.
Mr. Zheng frowned, turned his head, and saw that bentley with its sleek lines and cold luster.
A bentley is absolutely the dream car of countless men.
He was no exception, so he couldn't help but take a few extra glances.
Then, a valet from Jinlu Restaurant got out of the car and came jogging toward the two of them.
He looked on in confusion, and immediately saw the valet reach out and hand the car keys to Chen Ang, "Sir, your car has been brought over."
Chen Ang nodded, took the keys, toyed with them for a moment, then looked at Mr. Zheng and smiled, "See, I told you I understood the logic you were talking about."
Mr. Zheng's face instantly flushed red. He lowered his head in embarrassment, not knowing where to put the cigarette and lighter in his hands.
He wanted to speak, but didn't know what to say.
He could only turn to the side, not daring to look directly at Chen Ang again.
Fortunately, Chen Ang did not pay any more attention to him, nor did he provoke him further.
This allowed him to breathe a sigh of relief.
At this moment, he felt that the greatest embarrassment in the world was nothing more than this.
The once high-and-mighty state-owned enterprise deputy general manager had finally lived to become a clown.
Like a Sichuan opera face-changer, his complexion rapidly changed through several colors, looking extremely awkward.
Chen Ang took in his expression completely, then smiled and waved at Shen Pianran.
Shen Pianran was being nagged by her mother, but upon seeing him wave, she immediately broke free from her parents and walked quickly down the steps.
On the way, she glanced at Mr. Zheng and saw that this once arrogant and decent man's face was a mix of red and white.
And he didn't dare to look at her at all.
She opened the car door, looked at her parents and the others who had come to the entrance, and waved, "Mom, Dad, I'm leaving first; there are things to do at the law firm."
After saying that, she closed the car door, moving so quickly as if afraid someone would chase after her.
After rolling down the car window, she greeted Mr. Zheng's parents, then closed the window.
The bentley engine roared slightly as it slid past the entrance of Jinlu Restaurant, and the striking B logo on the trunk slowly disappeared from the eyes of those at the entrance.
Shen Pianran's parents looked at each other, then greeted Mr. Zheng's parents and left in a hurry.
Mr. Zheng's parents looked at their son, only to see that Mr. Zheng's face was gloomy, evidently stimulated by something.
They turned back and looked toward the alley where the bentley had departed, silent.
Mr. Zheng's mother wanted to say something, but thinking of how she had high-and-mightily judged what Chen Ang could use to give someone happiness during the meal, she was instantly embarrassed to the extreme.
Being able to afford a bentley, he had more qualifications than anyone else to give someone happiness.
On the way back to the Financial Center, Shen Pianran leaned against the passenger seat, pressing the back of her hand against her burning cheeks, and let out a long sigh.
"That last part you said sounded quite convincing."
"Spoken from the heart." Chen Ang turned the steering wheel, looking straight ahead.
"Also, that flex at the end... was pretty good." She turned her head, the corners of her eyes curving into a shallow arc, "Are you still complaining about me booking the bentley for you?"
"Are you talking about showing off? First respect the clothes, then respect the person; that's an eternal truth." Chen Ang looked back at her and grinned.
Hearing him say that word directly, Shen Pianran blushed and couldn't help but glare at him, "A dog's mouth can't spit out ivory."
Chen Ang laughed out loud, "You were the one who said it first, alright."
After dropping her off at the Financial Center, Shen Pianran got out of the car as if fleeing.
Chen Ang parked the car, and just as he was preparing to get out, his phone rang, and he pressed the car's answer button.
"Mr. Chen, the paperwork for that villa in Cuihu Villa has all been completed. I have the keys and the property deed here. When is it convenient for you to come and pick them up?" A strange voice came from the car's audio system.
Chen Ang looked at the incoming number and remembered that it was the company finance personnel arranged by Zhong Yuanxin.
"I'll pick someone up and head over." Chen Ang hung up the phone and turned the steering wheel.
The bentley drove out of the Financial Center, picked up Qu Suping at the hotel, and the mother and son arrived at Cuihu Villa once again.
Entering the villa complex, Chen Ang thought of that little girl.
He wondered in his heart whether he would be able to meet her again today.
