Chapter 87 The Adulterous Couple's Conspiracy

Wen Huilin squeezed in time to visit the law firm at noon.

When she pushed open the door, Attorney Zhou Zheng was standing by the window on the phone. He turned and saw her, then made a gesture for her to wait.

He stood with his back to the door, one hand in his suit pants pocket and the other holding the phone to his ear, speaking in a low voice as if dealing with a difficult person.

"I know, the footage is indeed unclear, but filing a case creates a record. If new evidence comes up later, it can be submitted together. Rest assured, I'll follow up."

After hanging up and turning around, Zhou Zheng gestured to Wen Huilin, "Have a seat."

He pointed to the sofa and sat down across from her.

"Is it the surveillance from Suiyuan Restaurant?" Wen Huilin's face stiffened. She had just heard part of the call, and since Zhou Zheng hadn't avoided her, she asked directly.

Zhou Zheng was silent for a moment.

He got up, fetched a laptop from his desk, opened a video file, and turned the screen toward her.

The footage showed the corridor view from Suiyuan Restaurant—a man and a woman confronting each other against the wall, the man's hand gripping the woman's neck.

The overall image was dim, faces blurry, only body outlines and movements visible.

After replaying it several times, Wen Huilin's expression grew increasingly grim.

"This is all the surveillance the police station provided," Zhou Zheng said, closing the laptop. "The footage is too blurry to definitively identify the man as your husband. The police say there's insufficient evidence for public security penalties, so no further action will be taken for now."

Wen Huilin opened her mouth but said nothing.

Her breathing quickened, and the whites of her wide eyes were distinctly bloodshot.

After a moment to compose herself, she said, "No further action for now—then what's the point of filing this case? He choked me, and the surveillance caught it. You said this evidence could make him leave with nothing, and now you're telling me it's useless."

"Ms. Wen, calm down," Zhou Zheng said steadily. "I told you, this case is hard to fight head-on, but it's not hopeless. The Suiyuan surveillance may be unusable, but that doesn't mean you have no other cards."

"What other cards? What about that recording? Didn't he mention 29.88 million US dollars on the phone? Isn't that money? Isn't that property?" Her voice rose uncontrollably, desperate like grasping at a lifeline.

"I've listened to the recording," Zhou Zheng pushed the laptop aside and folded his hands on his knees. "Chen Ang's words still can't stand alone as evidence; they can only serve as corroboration."

Wen Huilin fell silent again, her gaze gradually unfocusing.

Unconsciously, she dug her manicured nails into her handbag strap, her mind filled with disappointment.

The excitement that had sustained her since last night was slowly leaking away.

The domestic violence evidence was rejected, the recording was useless—she had nothing left.

She looked up at Zhou Zheng, her lips moving as if to speak, but no words came out.

Her phone suddenly rang, startling her into a jolt.

She glanced at the caller ID—it was Jian Ting.

She answered, and the voice on the other end was hushed and rapid, as if sneaking a call from her desk.

"Girl, I found a 200,000 yuan information consulting fee at Hengxing Investment, and the other party doesn't seem to have issued a compliant invoice."

"What does that mean?" Wen Huilin sat up straight abruptly.

"It means this expense has a flaw in the books. If thoroughly investigated, it could likely be deemed tax evasion on corporate income tax. The amount isn't large, but it's a different matter."

Jian Ting patiently explained.

Wen Huilin's eyes lit up again—any news was better than none.

After hanging up, her reddened eyes turned to Zhou Zheng, not hiding the hatred in them. "Lawyer Zhou, my friend just found that Hengxing Investment had a 200,000 yuan information consulting fee without a compliant invoice."

Zhou Zheng's eyes flickered for a moment. He pushed up his glasses and said, "Is that so? Is it not concealed property but private expenses booked as Company expenses? Does your friend have the authority to check who the payee is?"

Wen Huilin shook her head. "She said her authority isn't sufficient to dig deeper."

"Then you need to find someone who has influence in the tax system. The payee of that fee might be a breakthrough," Zhou Zheng offered his advice again.

Wen Huilin nodded.

Afterward, they didn't talk much more. After listening to Zhou Zheng's instructions, Wen Huilin left the law firm.

In the taxi, she thought for a moment, opened her contacts, and found Tu Yuandong's number.

The only person in Bin City she could reach with tax connections, besides Jian Ting, was Tu Yuandong. She remembered that Tu Yuandong had once arranged a dinner with tax officials.

Since Jian Ting said her authority was insufficient, she had to turn to him.

At the development zone, in the Yuandong Decoration office, Tu Yuandong's mind kept replaying the morning meeting since he returned.

Those fragments of memory resurfaced, making his heart increasingly restless.

Yu Fei's look at Chen Ang, Yu Fei's gesture of wrapping her arms around Chen Ang's neck, Yu Fei tongue-kissing Chen Ang in front of him...

These images mixed with all the previous humiliations, burning away the last bit of joy from signing the contract.

The scene of being slapped in the face by Chen Ang in public was stuck in his chest, unable to escape.

Then, he recalled Chen Ang's words about reading the contract carefully.

Though unclear what that meant, he didn't dare take it lightly now.

On alert, he took out the contract and reviewed it several more times. Only after having the legal department double-check and confirm no issues did he finally breathe a sigh of relief.

When Wen Huilin pushed the door open and entered, he finally shook off all negative emotions.

"Yuandong, there's something I really need your help with," Wen Huilin said as she sat down across from Tu Yuandong. Her voice carried a cautious tentativeness, a stark contrast to her previous loud and quarrelsome attitude.

"What help?" Tu Yuandong didn't get up but fixed his gaze on Wen Huilin.

"My best friend Jian Ting found out that Chen Ang has a Company outside..." She carefully avoided his gaze, observing his emotional changes.

Tu Yuandong's eyelids twitched. The words 'Hengxing Investment' came to mind. "What Company? Is he transferring your joint property?"

"Yes, very likely. I can't decide, so I had to come to you," Wen Huilin put on a fragile expression, her voice tinged with grievance.

Tu Yuandong was silent for a moment, then asked, "What exactly have you found out?"

Wen Huilin shifted her body, leaning forward, and said with indignation, "Yuandong, he has a lot of money. He's been hiding it from me. I can't just stand by and watch him transfer it all away."

As she spoke, her voice gradually grew louder, her emotions more agitated.

Tu Yuandong didn't pay attention to her emotional changes. At that moment, his heart pounded violently.

128 million, the office building, the bentley... The image of meeting Chen Ang that morning flooded back into his mind.

Damn it, is he really that rich?

Struggling to suppress the shock from this news, he lowered his voice and asked, "How much money is 'a lot'? Why didn't you find out before?"

Wen Huilin steadied her breath, casually picked up Tu Yuandong's teacup and took a sip, then looked up, her voice trembling slightly. "Yuandong, he... he has several hundred million in cash."
