185: Chapter 185 Courage is the Hymn of Humanity
"Master, the Blue Star Defense Department is resisting with all its might, but the level of the Great Lizards that descended this time far exceeds our estimates. The Defense Department's personnel simply cannot hold them back!" Xiao Jiu's voice suddenly became urgent, tinged with gravity.
"Damn it!" Qin Yang cursed under his breath, his expression suddenly darkening. H City had a population of millions and was the core territory he had painstakingly developed; he could not allow the Great Lizards to slaughter and trample it at will. He immediately raised his hand and sternly ordered the Death Warrior bodyguards standing by: "Go to the next block to provide support immediately. You must stop those Great Lizards!"
Upon hearing the order, the Death Warrior bodyguards did not hesitate for a second. They moved as one, rushing toward the next block at high speed.
With the situation critical, they no longer cared about hiding their strength. The group of Death Warriors moved with the agility of lightning, like top-tier masters from wuxia novels. They zipped through the heavy traffic, leaping and maneuvering through the streets. The flow of cars and crowds became their stepping stones, their swift movements leaving pedestrians on the sidewalk dazed and shocked.
"Mom! Look, it's Superman!" a child shouted, pointing at the figures of the Death Warriors with eyes full of excitement.
Some incredulous passersby beat their chests and stamped their feet in frustration. "I knew it! Cultivators and superhumans really do exist in this world! You people are secretly cultivating, why didn't you bring me along?!"
Exclamations and discussions erupted all around, but the Death Warriors remained expressionless and deaf to the noise, focused solely on reaching the battlefield. The Death Warriors around Qin Yang were all of level three or four combat strength, possessing extremely formidable individual power. Usually, when he traveled, there were dozens of Death Warriors guarding him in the open and in the shadows. This temporarily assembled reinforcement team was enough to handle the vast majority of crises on Blue Star.
Meanwhile, the next block had already become a living hell, a world away from the peaceful area where Qin Yang was located.
Several silver-gray starship crafts hovered and roared at low altitude, their engine noise making eardrums ache. On the ground, only a dozen or so Blue Star Defense Department soldiers remained, fighting a bloody battle. Every one of them was wounded, their clothes stained with blood, as they struggled to hold off a tide of low-level Great Lizards. Their defensive line was already on the verge of collapse.
Not far away, several larger high-level Iron Head and Long Tail Great Lizards, covered in thick scales, crouched lazily. They watched the one-sided slaughter with interest, their eyes filled with indifference and cruelty, completely disregarding the dozen or so struggling Defense Department soldiers.
Even more chillingly, every few moments, these high-level Great Lizards would casually snatch up innocent pedestrians fleeing in all directions and swallow them whole. Crimson blood dripped down their scales, leaving a mess everywhere. The bloody and brutal scene was more horrifying than the most terrifying horror movie; in the eyes of these alien monsters, humans were nothing more than easily accessible food.
"How much longer until reinforcements arrive?! I'm about to break!" a Defense Department captain, covered in wounds, roared with a sob of collapse in his voice as he swung his weapon fiercely at a low-level Great Lizard in front of him.
"The nearest support from the S City branch will take at least twenty minutes to arrive! But their combat power is similar to ours; even if they come, it'll just be more casualties! We must wait for reinforcements from headquarters, but they're too far away—it'll take at least an hour to get here!" the soldier beside him rasped, his voice full of despair.
"Those useless bastards in the Intelligence Department! Five alien crafts clearly arrived, yet they falsely reported only one! If I make it out of this alive, I'll skin them alive!" the captain's eyes bulged with rage as he cursed with resentment.
"Stop the nonsense! You've known since you joined the Defense Department that our mission is to resist the Great Lizards and protect civilians!" the highest-ranking officer on the scene barked, clutching a bleeding wound. "Now, everyone, stall for as much time as possible and let as many civilians evacuate as you can!"
No sooner had he spoken than two figures were suddenly sent flying by the massive blades of the low-level Great Lizards. Crushed by absolute brute force, the two soldiers were like kites with broken strings, smashing into the wall of a nearby building. They were instantly embedded in the brickwork, coughing up blood and completely losing their ability to fight; such severe injuries meant they were as good as dead.
Just as the Defense Department soldiers were on the brink of despair, the first wave of reinforcements finally arrived. However, they were not the Gene Warriors everyone had hoped for, but the Dongda Field Garrison stationed in H City. Upon receiving the alarm about an unidentified creature invasion and attacks on civilians, the garrison reacted swiftly, immediately dispatching an armored battalion to provide full-speed support.
The armored convoy roared onto the scene, heavy machine guns and autocannons instantly deployed to suppress the Great Lizard swarm with firepower. But as soon as the battle began, all the soldiers present were completely dumbfounded: the 20mm autocannon shells hitting the Great Lizards' thick scales lost all kinetic energy and fell powerlessly to the ground, without even leaving a white mark!
Seeing this, the few remaining Defense Department captains ignored their own injuries and roared at the top of their lungs: "Retreat now! These monsters aren't afraid of conventional thermal weapons! If you don't leave now, it'll be too late!"
Hearing this, the garrison commander's pupils constricted sharply, and his heart jolted: Not afraid of thermal weapons? How is that possible!
Protecting the country is the sacred duty of a soldier. Now that foreign enemies had invaded and civilians were being slaughtered, how could he watch the people suffer and only think of saving his own life? It was absolutely impossible!
The commander immediately issued a stern order for the entire force to increase firepower: swap autocannons for rockets and fire the main tank guns at full capacity. Yet the result remained desperate—neither shells nor rockets could penetrate the Great Lizards' scale armor, failing to cause even the slightest effective damage.
The commander's face turned as dark as the bottom of a pot, and his heart went cold. Being unable to break through their defense meant they could only take a beating passively, and the combat power of these unknown monsters was clearly far beyond imagination.
He immediately grabbed the vehicle's loudspeaker and shouted to the Defense Department soldiers: "How do we break their defense?!"
"Use their weapons, or the Starfall Stone weapons of our fallen comrades! But these monsters' physical fitness is seven or eight times that of a normal person—you're no match for them! Retreat, we can't hold on either!" a soldier coughing up blood replied with difficulty. Before he could finish, he was struck by a Great Lizard's blade and fell to the ground, stumbling.
"As long as we can break their defense!" A look of determination flashed in the commander's eyes as he roared, "Brothers, find weapons and charge with me! The territory of Dongda shall not allow monsters to run wild!"
With those words, he leaned down and picked up a blood-stained Defense Department weapon forged from Starfall Stone. Gripping it tightly, he charged toward the Great Lizard swarm without looking back.
Fear is the instinct of all living things, but courage is the anthem that belongs to humanity.
Even though the ordinary soldiers were filled with fear as they looked at the invulnerable monsters and their hands trembled slightly, not one of them retreated. They picked up usable weapons one after another and followed in the commander's footsteps, charging into the battlefield without fear of death.
The soldiers of Dongda would rather die in battle on the path of a charge than retreat a single step!
