142: Campus fraud case, innocent college students

“Alright, I called you over to have you follow Ye Lin and investigate that fraud case.”

“Xiao Wang, you first give Ye Lin a general overview, and then have Ye Lin take you to investigate.”

Yu Haifeng finished his instructions and went back to his own work; there were still many follow-up tasks for Qiang Teng Group.

Ye Lin led Wang Longxin and Qi Shan out and found a small conference room to stay in. He was already very familiar with Wang Longxin, so he didn't bother with pleasantries and asked directly, “What’s the situation? A fraud case, is the amount large?”

Wang Longxin showed an unnatural expression on his face, “Uh, it involves 5,300 yuan.”

“How much? 53 million?” Ye Lin felt like he hadn't heard clearly.

“Brother, you heard correctly, it’s just 5,300 yuan,” Wang Longxin explained helplessly.

“Does this also need to be handled by us criminal police? Couldn’t the Police Station just handle it?” Such a small case really wasn't necessary; he guessed it was another elderly person who had been scammed.

“Brother, you should look at thematerial first.” Wang Longxin handed over a stack of documents.

Ye Lin quickly scanned them and immediately sat up straight, looking at Wang Longxin several times, receiving only confirming glances.

“Ah…”

“This? Is it real?”

Wang Longxin and Qi Shan nodded, saying in unison, “It’s real.”

Ye Lin scratched his head. It wasn't that he didn't believe it, it just felt a bit unbelievable.

The complainant was a female sophomore from Yuezhou Normal University. She said she was scammed on campus by a middle-aged man in his forties or fifties. According to her, he looked very weathered and experienced. The scammer tricked her into believing he was a national secret agent, gradually luring her to give him money. In the end, they even booked a hotel room. It wasn't until the next day that the girl felt something was wrong, like she had been scammed, and only then did she report it to the police.

A university student.

Ye Lin didn't know what to say. A university student, who had read so many books and understood so many principles, how could she believe in secret agents or not? Did she think it was a foreign movie?

Therefore, Ye Lin kept confirming with the two of them, and it was clear that Wang Longxin and Qi Shan probably didn't quite believe it at first either.

University students have always been representatives of the elite. Now, to be scammed right on campus, it's quite… well, not to say stupid, but simply naive.

This was a typical case of defrauding both money and sex. However, in terms of the amount of money, it wasn't large. As for the sex, it's estimated that the girl was willing at the time. The case itself wasn't very serious, but daring to impersonate a national official, especially from the security bureau, must be severely punished.

Also, so many kind university students should also be given a wake-up call.

“Let’s go, we must catch this pervert.”

...Yuezhou Normal University.

This is an undergraduate university in Yuezhou City. It may not be a 985 university, but it is a famous university in the province. Most of the teachers in various primary and secondary schools in the province graduated from here.

It was late November, and most of the plane tree leaves on campus had already fallen. University students on the road were still running around campus in their youngest clothes. This was the most wonderful time of their lives, with classmates to study with and roommates to be silly with.

This was an ivory tower, detached from society while still within it, free from the intrigues of the outside world, and more about the collision of hearts between young people.

“University is really great,” Ye Lin exclaimed.

They didn't wear police uniforms this time, entering directly in plain clothes, and didn't need to register or anything.

“That’s right, thinking about us in the Police Academy, waking up to exercise and study, we forgot what the campus scenery looked like,” Wang Longxin also sighed with emotion.

Qi Shan was admiring the campus scenery, unmoved by the two old men's sentiments.

The first step in investigating a case is usually surveillance. Ye Lin and his team found the security office and began to investigate the surveillance footage. However, to protect the girl's privacy, they did not disclose much specific information and kept the security personnel standing far away.

Today was the 15th, and the incident occurred on the 11th, last weekend. The girl had thought about it for a long time before finally deciding to report it, so any bodily fluids left by the scammer on her were gone. Otherwise, a direct DNA comparison might have yielded results, saving a lot of trouble, unlike having to investigate bit by bit now.

The victim was Zhou Yanhong, 20 years old, a sophomore. She encountered the scammer around 10 AM on the 11th when she was going from her dorm to the classroom.

According to her description, she met the scammer when she walked in front of Teaching Building No. 3.

Ye Lin had Wang Longxin find the surveillance footage of Teaching Building No. 3. The camera's position wasn't ideal, and it wasn't high-definition, but people could be roughly seen.

The surveillance was fast-forwarded to around 10 AM, and Qi Shan immediately recognized the victim.

She was a very ordinary-looking girl, not tall, dressed very simply in a sports jacket, with her hair loose behind her head, carrying a few books, slowly walking towards the library.

On the other side of the camera, a man walked towards her, his face not visible.

The man walked up to the girl, reached out to stop her, they talked for a few sentences, then the man pulled out a document from his pocket, flashed it, and then the two walked away together. Throughout, the man did not show his face at all, as if he knew where the camera was.

Qi Shan explained, “According to the victim’s description, the man initially asked for directions. Just as she was about to answer, the man pulled out his ID, claiming to be from the security bureau, saying that a spy had entered the campus to cause trouble and needed her cooperation to provide cover.”

“At first, the girl was a bit unwilling, but the man said it was just to pretend to be a couple and walk around campus, she didn’t need to do anything else.”

“The girl originally still wanted to refuse, but the man then spoke of things like national righteousness, and how the country needed her. The girl, in a moment of impulse, felt that since the country had raised her for so many years, it was her time to give back to society and the country, so she agreed.”

Ye Lin shook his head helplessly, unsure whether to praise the girl for her profound sense of justice or to say she was brainless.

Someone just randomly pulled out a document, and she believed it. Ye Lin was speechless.

“This man, why is his right hand on his ear for no reason? Does he have an earpiece?” Ye Lin pointed at the man’s hand in the surveillance footage.

Qi Shan continued to explain, “The complainant also said that she initially didn't really believe it when she saw the document and wouldn't have gone with him. But there was always a voice coming from his earpiece, and he kept talking to the person in the earpiece. It was this conversation that made her believe it was real.”

Ye Lin thought for a moment and said, “Making up a story?”

Qi Shan gave a thumbs up, “Brother Ye is amazing, this man was indeed telling a story.”

“According to the complainant, this man kept using persuasive language to guide her, making her feel that our own agents were in danger, and if she didn’t cooperate, the operation might fail.”
