160: Don't go to the company, go to the police station
“Alright, Secretary Jianyang, we won’t listen to the report. Let’s visit a few units instead,” Kang Dejun said.
Hearing that they were going for an on-site visit, Jiang Jianyang’s heart skipped a beat, and his expression subtly changed. This was clearly a surprise inspection, not giving them any time to prepare.
“Okay, Secretary. How about we visit some enterprises? Yuezhou City has a few good ones that I’ve been meaning to recommend to you,” Jiang Jianyang suggested.
Generally speaking, visiting enterprises was a favorite among leaders. The roar of machinery and the sight of busy workers instantly made leaders feel a sense of vigorous progress and active production.
“No need for enterprises this time. I’ll visit some government offices. I’ve never been to one before, so consider it a grassroots visit,” Kang Dejun dismissed Jiang Jianyang’s suggestion.
As soon as he said this, the heads of the various departments behind him immediately started sweating with nervousness. Oh my, what was Secretary Kang up to? Who ever heard of a ‘grassroots visit’ being to government offices?
Usually, a grassroots visit meant going to villages or neighborhoods. What kind of grassroots was a government office?
Thinking that their own units hadn't received any notice yet, they all began to pray internally, hoping their office wouldn't be chosen.
However, a few were visibly excited, seeing this as an opportunity. If the Secretary visited their unit, as long as no major problems arose, it would be considered an achievement.
At the end of the year, they could add a line to their political achievements: ‘Received recognition from Secretary Kang.’ Just thinking about it made them happy.
Jiang Jianyang’s suggestion being rejected made his expression a bit awkward, but since the other person was several ranks above him, he could only force a smile and say, “Excellent! With Secretary Kang’s personal guidance, I believe the efficiency of our government offices will surely reach a new level.”
“I wonder where Secretary Kang would like to visit?”
This time, he didn’t bother to suggest anything. It was clear that the elder was well-prepared, so what was the point of suggesting anything?
“Little Zhang, where do you think we should go?” Kang Dejun pretended to turn and look at Secretary Zhang.
Secretary Zhang understood that the leader wanted to appear as if he was making a random inspection, so it wouldn’t seem too abrupt.
“Secretary, how about we visit the police station? I heard that Yuezhou City solved several major cases this year,” Secretary Zhang said, bowing slightly.
“Alright then, we’ll go to your Municipal Bureau to take a look.”
“Secretary Jianyang, what do you think?” Kang Dejun asked calmly.
Jiang Jianyang secretly cursed in his heart, ‘Can I say no?’
“Welcome, we welcome you wherever you go,” Jiang Jianyang said happily.
“Director Zhu, Secretary Kang wants to visit your place. Please lead the way.”
Standing behind him, Zhu Yi looked utterly bewildered. ‘Damn, is this a fight between immortals where I’m the one who suffers?’
There were no major cases, so why would the Provincial Level’s number one leader visit the police station?
“Yes, Secretary. Secretary Kang, please,” Zhu Yi quickly agreed, then immediately got into his police car and led the way.
Behind him, Jiang Jianyang followed Kang Dejun’s car, and finally, the cars of the various department heads.
As soon as he got into the car, Zhu Yi pulled out his phone and informed the bureau of the situation: Secretary Kang, the Provincial Level’s number one, would be visiting the Municipal Bureau in 30 minutes.
After giving instructions to his subordinates, he began to ponder why Secretary Kang wouldn’t go to the economic departments but insisted on coming to their police station. Had someone recently complained to the Provincial Level again?
Da Xia had always had the custom of ‘appealing to the emperor’—if the people had problems they couldn't solve, they would report them to a higher authority.
What had happened recently? The Qiang Teng Group’s demolition issue?
Last time, after Ye Lin exposed Gu Teng, Gu Teng died. Then Gu Qiang spent a large sum of money to compensate the Chengguan Village’s displaced residents and the families of the two deceased. Although there might still be some shady dealings, the people did receive benefits, so it shouldn't be that, logically.
Zhu Yi was a bit confused. Thinking of Ye Lin, he sighed again.
This guy was fierce and had a clear head, but he was a bit stubborn, always going against the City. They told him not to investigate the Qiang Teng Group, but he, well, he found an excuse to go investigate again and even provoked their security guards.
Really, he didn’t know the meaning of the word ‘death.’
This morning, the Inspector team went to investigate him. Although Deputy Director Feng had ordered it, he had also agreed. This kid, if he wasn’t kept in check, he wouldn’t know when he’d fall.
Speaking of which, that kid was probably still at the Inspector team now, maybe even in an interview. He’d have to make sure Secretary Kang avoided that area later.
As he pondered, the Municipal Bureau’s office building was already bustling with activity.
The Provincial Level’s number one leader was coming to visit, so it had to be taken seriously! All officials at the division level and above gathered in the plaza, nearly a hundred people standing in neat rows, ready to welcome Kang Dejun.
In the corridor on the seventh floor, Brother Ma looked down at the neatly arranged rows of people below, feeling a bit envious. Division level, huh?
He looked at his own police rank. When would he get a promotion too?
“Brother Ma, what’s going on? An operation?” a young Inspector asked curiously.
“What kind of operation could it be? When have you ever seen these big shots move collectively? All you know is ‘operation.’ It’s clearly a big leader coming,” Brother Ma criticized him sharply.
“Well, I didn’t even want to come to the Inspector Department in the first place. I wanted to be a criminal investigator,” the young Inspector grumbled.
Brother Ma immediately became displeased hearing the kid talk back and continued to lecture him, “Little Wang, you need to understand, so many people try every method to join the Inspector team, and you, you want to be a criminal investigator instead.”
“Do you think criminal investigators are like in the movies? Running around with guns? Or being a super detective?”
“That’s all acting. Which case doesn’t take time and effort to painstakingly solve? They’re all solved by risking one’s life. Don’t be in a good situation and not appreciate it.”
Seeing Brother Ma’s annoyed expression, Little Wang decisively changed the subject: “Brother Ma, how big of a leader do you think is coming?”
Brother Ma looked downstairs meaningfully and said, “Don’t let the big display fool you. The leader coming probably isn’t that high-ranking. Big leaders always give advance notice. It’s probably just the City Chief. The bureau is just putting on a show for the leader, that’s why there are so many people.”
“Oh.” Little Wang was a bit disappointed. He had thought it would be a very important leader.
“You, don’t look anymore. Go see how Ye Lin’s inspection report is coming along. The leader’s inspection has nothing to do with us. If he comes, he’ll just look at the frontline,” Brother Ma said with an air of a worldly expert.
“Oh,” Little Wang responded, then quietly walked to the door of the interview room and peeked inside. Ye Lin was still hunched over the table, his pen constantly moving.
He looked very serious, and although his posture seemed a bit strange, he was probably being diligent.
Little Wang checked the time. Only 20 minutes had passed. He figured this guy wasn’t some online novelist who could churn out 3,000 words in such a short time. He decided to go see the leader instead.
Brother Ma had just lit another cigarette and hadn’t even taken two puffs when he suddenly exclaimed excitedly, “They’re here, they’re here!”
Little Wang quickly walked over and looked down.
