567: It got out of hand

“Who is Shen Bei? Oh, I remember now, our new Team Leader of the Night Watchers. Ah, I'm getting old, my memory isn't what it used to be.”

Lord Yang felt bewildered, thinking, 'Why is he playing dumb?'

Of course, he didn't want to argue with the Prince of Wei about this, so he directly said, “Your Royal Highness, I'll be frank: the Team Leader of the Night Watchers has brought out the imperial ancestor's edict. This matter should not be handled this way. For so many years, the Night Watchers' duty has been to target the Demonic Path and the Yao Race; it should not change.”

When the Prince of Wei heard Lord Yang's words, his spirits recovered somewhat, and his expression also became solemn: “I have heard about this matter.”

Lord Yang saw that the Prince of Wei wasn't avoiding the issue, so he also breathed a sigh of relief and continued, “Then how does Your Royal Highness view this matter?”

The Prince of Wei sighed and replied, “This Prince also didn't expect Shen Bei to do such a thing. The Night Watchers truly made a mistake!”

The smile on Lord Yang's Face grew wider: “I knew Your Royal Highness was a man of great righteousness. Since Your Royal Highness also believes it was a mistake, then Shen Bei will be left to Your Royal Highness to handle.”

The Prince of Wei said, “He should indeed be dealt with properly; he truly makes me angry! He acts without any method or order, just recklessly! Don't worry, tomorrow this Prince will order him to correct it!”

Lord Yang nodded, just about to say something, when he heard the Prince of Wei muttering again.

“This brat is too much; he learned something new and didn't even tell the other Night Watchers. He made the other Night Watchers anxious and afraid, hogging it all! How detestable! He needs to be properly criticized and ordered to give a good lesson to the Night Watchers tomorrow, so everyone understands the policy and comprehends it. This kind of monopolizing behavior must absolutely be prohibited among the Night Watchers!”

Lord Yang's smile froze, and he looked at the Prince of Wei, calling out urgently, “Your Royal Highness…”

“Lord Yang, don't worry. If the Night Watchers made a mistake, they will definitely correct it! Alas, this Prince is old and doesn't manage affairs. These rascals, they dare to do anything to be lazy. They even selectively carry out duties; is this the responsibility a subject should have? It truly wastes His Majesty's trust. Lord Yang, rest assured, starting tomorrow, all Night Watchers will begin organizing self-reflection activities. They must take on the responsibility that the Night Watchers should bear!”

Lord Yang looked at the aged Prince of Wei before him, finding it hard to believe he could say such a thing.

What was he trying to do?

Was he serious?

“If there's a mistake, it must be corrected. In the future, I ask Lord Yang to help supervise. If those rascals don't do their jobs well, if they don't properly fulfill the imperial ancestor's edict, you must tell this Prince, and this Prince will give them a good lesson. The Night Watchers do not allow irresponsible people to loaf around and wait to die!”

Lord Yang's expression changed repeatedly. He looked serious and let out a light breath, saying, “Your Royal Highness, do you truly intend to do this?”

“What's wrong? If the Night Watchers made a mistake, then it's a mistake. This Prince will not cover up his own shortcomings; this Prince still has that much magnanimity. Lord Yang, don't think this Prince can't let go of his Face.”

Lord Yang looked intently at the Prince of Wei; this answer was something he had not anticipated.

He had originally thought that Shen Bei was just a Team Leader, using a chicken feather as a token of authority. This problem would quickly be resolved after discussing it with the Prince of Wei.

At most, they would just offer up the Lu Family to give the Night Watchers a way to save Face. Just a Lu Family, in the eyes of these bigwigs, it was nothing, insignificant.

But now he realized that the Prince of Wei was actually so strongly supporting Shen Bei.

Before coming, he hadn't taken Shen Bei seriously, only considering him a young man with a background. But now, he had to take this young man seriously.

The Prince of Wei couldn't possibly be unaware of the impact of bringing up the great ancestor's sacred edict, yet he still strongly supported Shen Bei's actions. What exactly did he want to do?

Lord Yang felt a chill in his heart. He stared at the Prince of Wei and said, “Let's be frank. Your Royal Highness, tell me honestly, what exactly do you want to do?”

The Prince of Wei replied, “Shen Bei is merely fulfilling the Night Watchers' duty. You speak as if this Prince has some grand scheme. I truly don't.”

Lord Yang took a deep breath, stared at the Prince of Wei, and asked a question: “Is Shen Bei your illegitimate son?”

Lord Yang wanted to curse. Besides this, he truly couldn't think of why the Prince of Wei would do this. This was no longer just strongly supporting Shen Bei; it was directly sending Shen Bei to the heavens.

The Prince of Wei glanced at Lord Yang, saying with great dissatisfaction, “This Prince has been impotent for a long time; how could I still have an illegitimate son? Lord Yang, why don't you bear one for this Prince and let me raise him? This Prince will surely treat him as his own son!”

Lord Yang's mouth twitched. Is this something a Prince would say? You truly have no Face at all!

Recalling the Prince of Wei's past reputation, Lord Yang gave up on debating such topics with him. Rumor had it that this individual was once the biggest rogue in the Imperial City.

Lord Yang suddenly said, “Are you trying to make Shen Bei your successor?”

The Prince of Wei said displeased, “Lord Yang, don't look at this Prince as so old, but this Prince is very long-lived. Shen Bei might die, and this Prince might still be alive. What succession would I need him for?”

Lord Yang looked at the Prince of Wei, who yawned after speaking, unsure if his words were true or false. The Prince of Wei looked like he was on the verge of death, yet he had outlived so many people. Shen Bei might not necessarily outlive him, unless Shen Bei became a Great Cultivator of Divine Power Realm.

Moreover… if the Prince of Wei died, the Night Watchers would surely be disbanded. What if the Prince of Wei chose a successor?

Then what was the Prince of Wei doing this for?

To become a Lord, one must naturally be the smartest among the smart. But now, he couldn't figure out the Prince of Wei's true intentions at all; repeated probing only left him more confused.

“Your Majesty will not allow the Night Watchers to act as they please. The Night Watchers should just eliminate demons and uphold the Dao. The Night Watchers of the Old Capital cannot be allowed to reappear,” Lord Yang stated directly.

At this moment, the Prince of Wei no longer yawned. His turbid eyes stared at Lord Yang and said, “Is it His Majesty who won't allow it, or is it you all who won't allow it to reappear?!”

Lord Yang was silent for a moment before saying, “The whole world will not agree!”

The Prince of Wei then laughed and said, “This Prince is not rebelling, it's not to the point of being an enemy of the world. Don't use the people of the world as a pretense. At most, it's just a struggle for power. If this Prince were to win over some people, perhaps quite a few would stand on this Prince's side.”

Lord Yang then said, “His Majesty will not permit it either!”

The Prince of Wei said, “This Prince has always been loyal. Whether His Majesty permits it or not is not for you all to say. If His Majesty issues an imperial edict, then this Prince will certainly obey His Majesty's words, and the Night Watchers will absolutely comply. But isn't it true that His Majesty hasn't forbidden it yet? Then how can the Night Watchers not obey the imperial ancestor's edict?”

At this point, the Prince of Wei paused and said, “Lord Yang, isn't that the truth? If I were you, I shouldn't be coming to me right now; I should be going to His Majesty. Let His Majesty issue an imperial edict.”

Lord Yang nodded and said, “Your Royal Highness is right; it was indeed presumptuous of me. I will go to His Majesty now to request an imperial edict.”

The Prince of Wei nodded.

Lord Yang's expression was grave; involving the imperial ancestor's edict would be very troublesome. Although Lord Yang knew that His Majesty disliked the Night Watchers acting this way and would issue a decree according to their wishes, they still had to consider the Ancestral Emperor and find appropriate means. They had a lot of work ahead of them.

“Then I shall take my leave!”
