596: Must keep a low profile? That's not my personality.

When Shen Bei left, he happened to see an attendant coming to the main gate. This startled Shen Bei, and he immediately left through the Night Watcher's back door.

He left quickly, without a moment's hesitation, and didn't stop to wonder why they were there. Nothing could be kept secret, and if he were caught eavesdropping, it would be a huge problem. Those court officials would then have a reason to target him.

Now, at least Prince Wei was there to shield him from disaster.

However, Shen Bei had clearly overthought things; the attendant had no intention of looking for him. The arriving attendant was merely inviting Prince Wei to the palace.

"Sir, His Highness is ill," Bi Kun said, following Prince Wei's instructions. "He said he needed to recuperate. He's not at the Night Watcher, and we don't know where he is."

The attendant frowned when he heard this. "This is a great ancestor's sacred edict, and all the officials are waiting for Prince Wei. Go find Prince Wei immediately!"

Bi Kun said with a bitter expression, "Sir, we will do our best to find him. But as you know, His Highness is like a Dragon—his head is seen but not his tail—so we may not be able to find him. How about this: we'll search, and you can report back to His Majesty earlier, so neither side is delayed."

Facing Prince Wei, the attendant didn't even dare to speak harshly; this wasn't their first time in such a situation. Every time Prince Wei didn't want to go, he would claim to be ill.

But this time was different; all the court officials had entered the palace with such momentum that even His Majesty was forced into a corner.

This was the first time the attendant had witnessed such a scene in so many years.

Looking at the unyielding Bi Kun, he could only say, "Go investigate what happened in the court, then inform Prince Wei that His Majesty is waiting for him."

The attendant left helplessly.

Everyone in the Night Watcher was now filled with worry. Shen Bei had gone too far this time, and with the court officials in an uproar, they didn't know what the Night Watcher would face.

But because Prince Wei supported him, they would endure everything.

.........

The attendant quickly returned to the palace. The court officials watched the attendant return alone. General Yang was the first to shout, "Feng Nei, where is Prince Wei?"

"Reporting to His Majesty and all the sirs, the Night Watcher says Prince Wei is ill and is recuperating somewhere unknown. They have already sent people to look for him."

This statement made all the present court officials look at each other in dismay.

Prince Wei, are you mocking our intelligence with such an excuse?

"Your Majesty! Prince Wei clearly has no regard for you, daring to defy the great ancestor's sacred edict and not come!" An official stepped forward and angrily denounced Prince Wei.

The Emperor sat high on the Dragon Throne, appearing like an ordinary man with an ordinary face, completely lacking the majesty of an Emperor.

His tone was also ordinary, without any fluctuations: "Prince Wei defies the great ancestor's sacred edict. Then, according to the law, how should he be dealt with? You, draft a great ancestor's sacred edict according to the law and accuse him of his crime."

With that single sentence, the person who had just spoken immediately knelt on the ground with a thud, trembling like a sieve. "This subject dares not!"

"Dare not? Then are you asking Us to draft it personally?"

"This subject deserves ten thousand deaths!" The person knelt on the ground, pleading for forgiveness with a trembling voice.

The Emperor waved his hand. "We merely asked you; there was no other meaning. Rise."

But the person remained kneeling, not daring to get up.

The Emperor ignored him and looked at the three Da Laos, saying, "Royal Uncle is ill. Do you think we should wait for him to recover, or should We continue to send people to find him, and only adjourn the court after he is found?"

The three Da Laos looked at each other, genuinely unable to understand what the Emperor meant. Did the Emperor not care about the great ancestor's sacred edict at all? As an Emperor, who would want to be restricted by ancestral rules? Logically, the Emperor should dislike it the most.

Yet, the Emperor appeared very passive, completely uninterested in resolving the issue. Everything seemed so calm and unconcerned that if they didn't know the Emperor's personality, they might even think he was firmly supporting Prince Wei and the Night Watcher.

"Your Majesty, Pan Fei is, after all, a third-rank official. Without His Majesty's command, the Night Watcher simply took him away. There must be an explanation," Da Lao Pei said.

The Emperor nodded. "Yes! But Royal Uncle is ill, and We can hardly demand an explanation from him now, can We?"

"Your Majesty, all of this was done by one Team Leader. For such an overstepping act, he should be imprisoned and punished!" The most radical Da Lao Wei shouted.

The great ancestor's sacred edict absolutely cannot be revealed, or else the hard-won balance will be completely shattered. With the great ancestor's sacred edict, the Night Watcher's power would become boundless.

Thinking back to the Great Ancestor period, Prince Wei of the Night Watcher could almost be considered a Vice Emperor, which they could not accept. The three Da Laos also believed that His Majesty would absolutely not accept this point.

"It's inappropriate to deal with someone from the Night Watcher without going through Royal Uncle," the Emperor replied.

All the court officials exchanged glances, and deep worry filled the eyes of the three Da Laos.

What exactly was His Majesty thinking? What did he intend to do? Ever since Shen Bei slapped Pan Fei and produced the great ancestor's sacred edict, His Majesty had been acting very strangely. He seemed not to mind the incident. But... did he truly not mind? Or was he trying to achieve something through this event?

Prince Wei was evading, and the Emperor had such an attitude. They felt all their efforts were hitting cotton; the court officials' grand show of forcing the palace suddenly ran out of steam.

The three Da Laos desperately wanted to impulsively say, 'Then we'll wait here until Prince Wei recovers,' but they didn't dare. What kind of person was Prince Wei? How could he be threatened? If they dared to wait, Prince Wei would dare not show up.

So, should they follow Pan Fei's example and hire assassins to make Shen Bei disappear? They didn't want the court situation to be ruined by a young man.

Could Prince Wei hide for a while, but not forever? They had to find a way to make him come out!

He must give an explanation for this matter.

...

Shen Bei patiently waited an entire day. Even after the daily settlement panel had refreshed, he still hadn't received a great ancestor's sacred edict from the Emperor to deal with him and the Night Watcher. A slight sigh of relief escaped his chest.

This meant that Prince Wei was still holding his ground, and the Emperor temporarily had no intention of blaming the Night Watcher for their actions.

And as before, he was turning a blind eye to the great ancestor's sacred edict.

Regarding the Emperor, Shen Bei had secretly inquired and heard that he was extremely cunning.

Shen Bei now felt it too; the great ancestor's sacred edict was brought out, and he remained completely unresponsive, just giving it the cold shoulder. What was he calculating?

Of course, although Shen Bei didn't know what the Emperor was thinking, since he wasn't intervening, then he shouldn't be blamed for taking this opportunity to push his luck.

Pan Fei had only just arrived there; he would continue to play, and play bigger.

Continue to cause trouble!

He would poison Prince Wei's ear, forcing him to dispatch him elsewhere.

And as for where he would be dispatched, did it even need to be said?

One-Blade Gorge, at this critical juncture, was naturally the best choice.

.........

In the evening, he sent someone to invite Ren Chuan to his hiding place.

"Team Leader, are you really alright?"

Ren Chuan surveyed the surroundings, sighing, "His Highness Prince Wei truly has the heart to protect you!"

"Of course, he's not senile. After all, he personally told me yesterday to take over the Night Watcher. How could he not cover for me? See, I dealt with Pan Fei, and I'm perfectly fine."

Ren Chuan was shocked: Prince Wei said he would let Shen Bei take over? Is that true or false?

Shen Bei said with a smile, "Come, sit, sit. I'll tell you some good news."

"His Majesty is truly incomparably wise. He tacitly approved our action to take down Pan Fei and has not taken any action against our Night Watcher. This means we, the Night Watcher, need to redouble our efforts!"

"Really?"

Ren Chuan looked at Shen Bei suspiciously, always feeling that this adult's mind was too wild.

Shen Bei said, "Taking down a third-rank official is such a huge matter that even the Da Laos were alarmed. But His Majesty did nothing. Isn't that him bearing the pressure for us? Of course, it's tacit approval."

Ren Chuan said worriedly, "Sir, no matter what His Majesty thinks, it's truly a stroke of luck that we were able to escape unscathed this time. The Night Watcher's capture of Pan Fei will inevitably make those in high positions of power feel a sense of crisis, and they will view our Night Watcher, especially you, Team Leader, as a thorn in their side. During this time, you must act with extreme discretion and absolutely not give any opportunists a handle to use against you."

"Mm-hmm, I know, I know."

Shen Bei nodded, smiling faintly, "I invited you here today to discuss a serious matter."

Ren Chuan's expression became serious. "What does Team Leader wish to command?"

"I plan to launch a demon-slaying operation throughout the entire Imperial City!"

Screw it!
