295: Night Convergence
"My Lord!"
Xing Daorong and Wei Liang hurried out to meet him.
"Mm." Lin Yue nodded. Seeing the two, he said, "I just finished some things and arrived late. Are your men all here?"
"They are all here," the two replied, nodding.
"What time is it now?" Lin Yue suddenly asked.
"There's still a quarter of an hour until the hour of Chou," Yang Yanping replied.
"Then you two will come with me," Lin Yue said in a deep voice, then turned his horse around, waiting for their Army.
"My Lord, where are we going this time?" Xing Daorong asked after some hesitation.
"The Encampment of the Right Wise King," Lin Yue said, his voice flat.
"We're going to raid the Right Wise King's Encampment at night?" Xing Daorong exclaimed, his eyes full of excitement.
"General, does the higher-ups know about this?" Wei Liang asked, plucking up his courage after much hesitation.
He had heard of Lin Yue's great name as soon as he arrived at the Great Wall Legion: someone who disregarded orders, launched attacks without authorization, and had no concept of military commands!
This was not common among young Generals and went against the Great Wall Legion's steady and cautious style. Yet, he had unexpectedly captured the Xiongnu Prince Wuluoli alive and then made a thousand-mile dash to King Baiyang's Encampment, capturing King Baiyang and a host of other Xiongnu nobles.
This greatly surprised the Great Wall Legion, who had less experience in open-field battles with Xiongnu cavalry, and at the same time, significantly boosted their confidence in engaging them in such battles!
But this opponent was not a wastrel like Wuluoli, nor a minor Xiongnu King like King Baiyang!
This opponent was the Xiongnu Right Wise King!
Setting aside the fact that the Right Wise King was one of the three most powerful figures among the Xiongnu, his strength as a First-rate Military General alone was something they could not contend with!
He did not want his first major battle here to end in a humiliating and disheveled retreat! He felt it was necessary to advise him, not to just watch him jump into a fire pit.
Just as he was about to speak, he heard Lin Yue say:
"No need to worry. This order came directly from General Wang Li.
The Supervisor also knows. Come with me."
Lin Yue didn't give him a chance to speak. Seeing Xing Daorong's Army streaming out, he lightly nudged his horse's flank, and Big Yellow carried him into the night.
Wei Liang felt a bit awkward. Only after Wang Zhi gave him a slight nod did he feel relieved and follow Lin Yue.
Xing Daorong chuckled at the sight, spurred his horse, and prepared to catch up with Lin Yue.
He loved fighting these night raids, especially battles where he didn't have to think for himself!
He only liked fighting alongside his Lord!
Then, the Army, like a slithering snake, formed a long, winding ambush line across the grassland, quietly moving towards the Right Wise King's Encampment!
"Enemy! About five hundred paces ahead, approximately ten Xiongnu Soldiers!" A Qin Army cavalryman on a white horse suddenly stopped, his eyes glinting with killing intent as he spoke in a deep voice.
The other cavalrymen behind him also stopped abruptly, looking ahead. Indeed, they spotted some figures in the distance, though they couldn't see them clearly.
"Squad Leader, let's charge!" a thin man among the cavalrymen asked, his eyes gleaming with excitement, requesting to fight.
"Charge what? By the time you charge over, they'll have already run away," the Squad Leader said in a deep voice, then spoke to a man:
"Xia Tianyi, take one squad of men and flank from the right.
Er Gou, you also take one squad of men and flank from the left. Be careful, both of you, don't expose your positions."
"Yes, sir!" several men responded softly, each taking nine men and fanning out from the two wings.
"Squad Leader, what about me?" the thin man from before asked.
"Monkey, you retreat three hundred paces and hide in the dark. When they charge over, then you make your move," the Squad Leader said.
He now had only thirty-six men under his command. The other three men each took a squad, and after his arrangements, he now had only five men by his side!
"Squad Leader, are you going to be the bait?" Monkey asked tentatively.
"Mm, otherwise, if there are too many of us, and they see so many of us, they'll probably run away.
The order from above tonight is not to let a single Xiongnu Scout escape!" the Squad Leader mused, then waved his hand at Monkey, signaling him to retreat quickly, and immediately led his five men quietly forward.
Before they had gone thirty paces, the Xiongnu Scouts opposite them slowly rode towards their position. Just as the Qin Army discovered them, they too keenly spotted the Qin Army!
The two sides slowly approached each other like this, but their speed was not fast. At times, there was even a tacit understanding between them: you advance, I retreat; you retreat, I advance.
The scene of cavalry charging together at a command on the battlefield did not occur. Most of their skirmishes as Scouts involved constant pulling, probing, until one found the other's weakness and delivered a fatal blow!
So this tested both sides' mentality, patience, and observational skills even more!
In terms of Scouting, even elite Scouts like those from the White Horse Camp had to admit that the Xiongnu Scouts were indeed very tricky. Every engagement felt like greeting the King of Hell.
Because they had some natural advantages: they had lived on horseback since childhood, and hunting was commonplace for them. For a single prey, they could even go sleepless for days, continuously tracking it until the prey relaxed its guard, only then would they deliver a fatal blow!
So, in Scouting, the Xiongnu had always held a slight advantage.
But knowing they had an advantage was one thing; whether they could be defeated was another. Who would admit they were inferior to the opponent without fighting?
This was the thought of all Qin Army Scouts!
The two sides thus roamed, searching for each other's weaknesses, competing in patience.
Suddenly, after a quarter of an hour of pulling and probing, the Xiongnu Scouts abruptly accelerated at full speed!
The Squad Leader instinctively drew his longbow from his back, only to realize that the Xiongnu Scouts were not heading towards them!
"Damn it!" the Squad Leader cursed inwardly. The Qin Army on the right flank had been discovered!
The ten White Horse Camp Scouts on the right flank also reacted to the situation!
Unfortunately, although they weren't close, under the full charge of the Xiongnu Scouts, it would only take a few breaths to reach them!
"Scatter!" the Squad Leader of the right flank, Xia Tianyi, shouted. His ten men couldn't become live targets for the enemy!
Sure enough, just as the ten men scattered, a volley of arrows came flying at them!
Fortunately, the White Horse Camp Scouts had seen such scenes before and were prepared. Only two men suffered minor shoulder grazes, but they were not seriously injured.
When the Xiongnu Scouts' first attack failed, they decisively scattered, splitting into two groups, and another volley of arrows came!
"Fire arrows!" Xia Tianyi shouted!
Currently, there were only two paths before him: one was to charge forward and engage in close combat, and the other was to fire arrows back!
And he chose to fire arrows, because someone was already charging!
