130: Chapter 130 [Soul Blade] Saves the Master
Yu Yiyang suddenly remembered something and bolted outside.
In the exercise airspace, two planes from G Istanbul continued their radio communication.
"Wingman, descend a bit and check my missile rack. See if there's some kind of malfunction."
Arafat, the F-16 flight leader, ordered anxiously.
"Lead, your air-to-air missiles are all there."
"Oh, you scared me. That's good then. It must be the electronics..."
"But, your air-to-ground missile is gone."
"What??? How is that possible?"
As soon as the wingman finished speaking, Arafat felt like his head was about to explode. He quickly thought of a series of possibilities: a false signal from the missile rack? A computer system failure? Had the ground crew mistakenly loaded a live round instead of a training missile? Shuddering at the last possibility...
If that were the case, things would be troublesome.
He looked at the missile's trajectory. It seemed to be circling like a headless fly, but it was clearly still operational. The pilot began to pray that it would quickly find a deserted place to "hide" itself.
After circling for a long time, the missile's trajectory headed straight in one direction. The pilot checked the map, and sweat suddenly broke out on his forehead as he stammered a sentence.
"T-This is bad!!!"
Chu Ge and Deputy Commander Ran were staring intently at the large screen.
"Strange, what are they doing? Is the exercise over?"
"Probably not. Isn't there still one plane that hasn't been taken down?"
Deputy Commander Ran said relaxed. He was in a great mood now. Judging by the current state of the battle, today's exercise could be celebrated as a complete success ahead of schedule.
About one kilometer from the temporary airfield station, there was a temporary Field Air Defense Regiment.
Regiment Commander Wang Kai was staring at the radar screen. The radar operator responsible for monitoring the exercise area had already reported the sudden emergency of the missile anomaly.
"Capture the missile's trajectory! Have the First Battalion prepare two interceptor missiles for interception!"
Wang Kai decisively issued the combat order.
"Yes, Commander."
"Reporting to the Commander, the radar has captured another target moving rapidly toward the missile."
The radar operator quickly relayed the battlefield intelligence.
"Hmm? Did a sister unit take action?"
"Probably not. Its speed is too fast and its movement is erratic. However, its current direction is on the missile's attack path, which is very similar to an interceptor missile."
The radar operator stared at the eerie scene on the radar screen, making an ambiguous judgment.
Wang Kai thought quickly. He knew that not far from this backup airfield was the Weapon Experiment Base, and his sister units were stationed around there.
"Ignore it for now. Have the interceptor missiles keep tracking the target trajectory and launch as soon as a window of opportunity is found! Have the Second Battalion's Land Shield 5000 close-range air defense system track this missile as well. If the interceptors fail, they must shoot it down. We cannot let the missile break through."
"Yes!"
The signalman quickly conveyed Commander Wang's orders. The atmosphere in the entire combat command center suddenly became tense as everyone stared at the two light spots on the radar screen.
Deputy Commander Ran's brow was now furrowed. He vaguely sensed something was wrong. On the large screen, the four planes were still flying level without any tactical maneuvers. Were they just chatting in the air?
Just as he was about to call his guard to ask the Directorate, the guard rushed toward him and whispered a few words in his ear.
"What? Is the situation confirmed?"
"Yes, Commander."
"Then what are we waiting for? Quickly escort Academician Chu away."
"Um, Deputy Commander Ran, it seems it's too late. Besides, I don't think we need to leave. Look who's here?"
Chu Ge interjected at this moment and pointed toward the sky. Deputy Commander Ran looked up in confusion, and the next moment, his eyes widened.
In the sky, [Soul Blade]'s imposing figure stood suspended. It wasn't very far from Chu Ge and the others, about less than 100 meters away. At this distance, the massive silhouette of [Soul Blade] appeared even more concrete.
Further away, a missile could be faintly seen in the azure sky, trailing a long tail as it sped toward [Soul Blade]. Under the cloudless sky, the long smoke trail was exceptionally conspicuous.
"Is that [Soul Blade]? What is it trying to do? Take the missile head-on? Academician Chu, tell it to get out of the way! There are air defense units nearby; it doesn't need to sacrifice itself."
Deputy Commander Ran's anxious words carried a hint of sadness.
"Haha, it's fine. Commander, tell the air defense units not to act. It's no big deal for [Soul Blade] to take a missile head-on. Just don't let our own units' missiles bombard it for several rounds."
Chu Ge calmly picked up a bottle of drink, unscrewed the cap, and took a sip. So refreshing! Then he silently complained about [Soul Blade] in his heart.
"[Soul Blade] is striking a pose again. It's being quite flashy today. Well, it's about time it got a whiff of gunpowder."
"Oh no, at this distance, I'm afraid it's too late."
Sure enough, just as Deputy Commander Ran finished speaking, two interceptor missiles with long trails were already charging in from afar. These interceptors must have been launched while they were talking.
The people on the viewing platform no longer thought of running. They all looked toward the sky, struck speechless by the scene before them.
"Boom!"
The missile exploded violently in front of [Soul Blade]. The loud sound of the high explosives made the guests cover their ears and crouch down. They seemed to suddenly realize that the target of this missile was likely here.
Chu Ge and Deputy Commander Ran remained as steady as Mount Tai, still staring fixedly at the sky. They were more concerned about [Soul Blade] now.
[Soul Blade] remained motionless. Deputy Commander Ran breathed a sigh of relief.
The remaining two interceptor missiles arrived one after another. This time, [Soul Blade] didn't take them head-on; it simply performed a few agile evasive maneuvers and easily dodged both missiles.
The two interceptor missiles brushed past [Soul Blade]'s steel body and self-destructed in the nearby air.
"Boom!" "Boom!"
After the sound of the explosions, Deputy Commander Ran let out a long sigh of relief.
"Commander Ran, don't be so quick to sigh. I think you should first contact the relevant person in charge of the country those F-16 pilots belong to."
Chu Ge said slowly after taking another sip of his drink.
"Hmm, we will definitely seek them out. They must give us an explanation for today's incident."
"No, no. What I mean is, you have to explain to them why four planes came, but only two are going back!"
Chu Ge pursed his lips, trying not to laugh.
"Huh? Academician Chu, what do you mean?"
"[Soul Blade]'s treatment of those who dare to move against China so brazenly has always been... well, rather cruel. It basically settles scores on the spot. With it, there's no such thing as an 'explanation' process."
"Ah? Academician Chu, first let..."
As he spoke, Deputy Commander Ran turned back to look at the sky, but there was no sign of [Soul Blade]. He quickly turned back, and Chu Ge shrugged at him. Deputy Commander Ran understood instantly. After a brief moment of thought, a smile returned to his face.
"Alright, haha! Academician Chu, off the record, I like [Soul Blade]'s personality! Haha! Is this a program? Did you set it in advance?"
Chu Ge said nothing, only nodding silently.
In the distance, a convoy of military vehicles sped toward them and stopped nearby. Squads of heavily armed soldiers got out of the trucks and lined up alongside the guards who were already on alert. The entire perimeter of the viewing site was now densely packed with soldiers.
The guests around Chu Ge, who had just breathed a sigh of relief, became tense again, looking at Chu Ge and the others in bewilderment.
