92: Chapter 92 A Clash of Fate
The officer with the rank of Major General saw Wang Xuedong and the others and walked over quickly.
"Are you the comrades from Yanjing? I am Division Commander Liao Jianhui of the First Border Defense Division of the Southwest Military Region."
"Greetings, Division Commander. I am Captain Wang Xuedong of the Special Operations Brigade of the 223rd Combined Arms Brigade of the First Army."
"Greetings, Division Commander. I am Captain Xue Zhikai of the Yanjing Armed Police Special Operations Brigade."
Wang Xuedong and his team stood at attention and saluted Division Commander Liao.
"Good, we've been waiting for you. Let's talk as we move. Both captains will ride in the same helicopter with me so I can give you a brief overview of the situation. The remaining team members will take the other helicopter."
"Yes, sir!"
On one side of the military airfield, two transport helicopters had already started up. The group quickly ran over and boarded the helicopters one by one.
The huge propellers of the two military-green helicopters were spinning rapidly. A ring of white mist formed beneath the propellers as the powerful airflow dispersed the rain and blew it downward, much like a giant electric fan blowing air. The entire helicopter was shrouded in this misty, rainy atmosphere.
After a brief pause, the transport helicopters lifted off the ground.
The helicopters flew rapidly at a low altitude. Wang Xuedong and the others sat straight in the cabin, waiting for Division Commander Liao to brief them on their mission.
"The situation is this: at 8:00 this morning, border defense authorities discovered an illegal entrant during routine Sky Net screenings. After multi-party investigation, this illegal entrant was identified as a well-known mercenary from Southeast Asia."
"His nickname is Lone Wolf. He has planned and executed several notorious assassination operations and is currently wanted by several countries and Interpol as a Red Notice A-level fugitive."
"Lone Wolf is sinister by nature and bloodthirsty. While other killers usually target only one primary objective, he does not. He often kills indiscriminately, sparing neither the old, the weak, the women, nor the children. Just this year alone, he has dozens of lives on his conscience."
Division Commander Liao paused after saying this, took several wanted posters from a bag nearby, and handed them to Wang Xuedong.
"These are his wanted posters. The trouble now is that our technical department has calculated that the commercial vehicle carrying Lone Wolf is severely overloaded. By repeatedly playing back the video, we determined that he most likely has accomplices, and we cannot even rule out the possibility that the vehicle is carrying heavy weapons."
"There is another strange point. The reason Lone Wolf is called 'Lone Wolf' is that he usually prefers to act alone and rarely has companions. So, why would he have so many accomplices this time?"
Division Commander Liao frowned as he looked at Wang Xuedong and Xue Zhikai.
"It is highly likely that his target this time is quite troublesome, and he probably cannot handle it with his own abilities!"
Xue Zhikai pondered for a moment and then spoke up loudly.
"Correct, that is our assessment as well. Therefore, we have immediately arranged for our foreign counterparts to investigate his whereabouts over the past two days and the people he has been in contact with, though no valuable information has come through yet."
"Then where is Lone Wolf now?"
Wang Xuedong asked anxiously.
"We detected his trail through a camera on this road, but the camera at the next intersection did not spot the vehicle. It is highly likely that they turned onto another side road, so we do not currently know where he is."
Division Commander Liao unfolded a map as he spoke, pointing to a red circle on it while speaking to Wang Xuedong.
"Division Commander Liao, don't you find one thing strange? This area is full of deep mountains and old forests, rarely visited by people, let alone containing any valuable targets. Why would they go to such great lengths to come here? Are they here for a group tour?"
Wang Xuedong said nonchalantly while looking at the map.
"Haha, Captain Wang has hit the nail on the head."
Division Commander Liao laughed but did not continue, instead nodding towards the two captains.
"No wonder the military region leaders in Yanjing specifically named you two to lead the team here. Indeed, not only are your abilities outstanding, but you also have your own way of thinking."
Division Commander Liao did not continue the topic regarding the operation, but praising them to their faces left Wang Xuedong and Xue Zhikai a bit bewildered. The two looked at each other, their expressions becoming slightly unnatural.
"Haha, alright. As for the specifics, you will naturally understand once we arrive. For now, I estimate the helicopter still has a while to fly. Captain Wang, while we have time, you really must let me see the new weapon from Academician Chu Ge, right?"
Division Commander Liao finished speaking and glanced at the black backpack beside Wang Xuedong. The shoulder strap of this black backpack was still being held in Captain Wang's hand, as if the backpack would run away if he let go.
"Huh? Haha, Division Commander Liao, why are you just like our brigade commander? You look like a hungry wolf seeing a lamb whenever you spot a treasure."
Wang Xuedong was speechless as he looked at Division Commander Liao's gleaming eyes.
"Don't even mention your brigade commander; just thinking about him makes me angry. Good grief, he prioritizes his unit for every good thing. We are the frontline military force of China, yet we don't even have a single new gun. Because of this, our commander even made a special trip to the General Armament Department. Guess what they said?"
"What did they say?"
Wang Xuedong perked up. Beside him, Xue Zhikai was truly a bit bewildered; he couldn't figure out what these two were talking about.
But suddenly hearing Division Commander Liao mention a new weapon! Has the military developed a new weapon? He had to prick up his ears. Once the mission was completed, he would go back and 'snitch' to his superiors.
"The new rifles are expensive and cannot be issued to everyone at once; there has to be a process. As for who gets equipped first, they have their own considerations. Border defense units are all temporarily not being re-equipped. Your 1st Division can't demand special treatment, right? Wouldn't that throw all the other brother units into chaos?"
"Oh, and there's also the matter of the new sniper rifle in your hands. That's even more exaggerated. They said there's only one? I don't believe it! Are they trying to fool a child?"
Division Commander Liao finished speaking with a flushed face; it seemed he was genuinely quite angry.
Xue Zhikai heard clearly now. Not only were there new rifles, but there was also a new sniper rifle. Since he was a sniper, he turned his head along with Division Commander Liao to look at Wang Xuedong. A united front had been established so quickly.
"I say, Wang Xuedong, you're something else. You put on quite an act when we were on the fat girl. Are you afraid I'm going to steal your new gun or what? Hurry up, maybe I won't even think much of it. Is it stronger than my Type 26? I find that hard to believe."
Now Wang Xuedong wasn't having it. The Electromagnetic Kinetic Sniper Rifle was his precious baby; how could he endure this? He quickly pulled out the sniper rifle case and carefully placed it on the floor of the cabin.
Division Commander Liao secretly gave a thumbs-up to Xue Zhikai, who smiled knowingly. The old method: reverse psychology. Through such a short period of contact, he had more or less figured out Wang Xuedong's temper. You could criticize him, but if you criticized his weapons, that was a no-go. Whether it was the 88-sniper or this new sniper rifle, the provocation just now had clearly worked.
Wang Xuedong didn't notice any of this. He was focused on opening his box. With a "click," the white box opened, and the Electromagnetic Kinetic Sniper Rifle appeared before everyone. Xue Zhikai glanced at it nonchalantly, but the next second, his mouth fell open, and he shoved Wang Xuedong aside.
Before Wang Xuedong could get angry, he was instantly shoved back by Division Commander Liao.
"Captain Wang, move to the side; you're blocking me."
