98: Chapter 98 Dual-wielding Guns
Wang Xuedong, Xue Zhikai, and Battalion Commander Wang were all behind a dirt slope, waiting silently at the three-way intersection.
"Battalion Commander Wang, are you sure they'll take this road? It's been half the day, and there's not even a ghost in sight."
Wang Xuedong sat there muttering while clutching his Electromagnetic Kinetic Sniper Rifle; regardless, it wasn't his concern yet.
"They'll come. This small road only forks here, unless they abandon their vehicle."
Battalion Commander Wang replied while looking through his binoculars.
Time passed minute by minute.
Viper was driving fast, even taking a moment to check the rearview mirror. After looking for a while, he finally couldn't hold it in anymore.
"I say, brothers, are you missing someone? That Big Guy—I've been counting for a while now."
"Focus on your driving and mind your own business."
Lone Wolf replied irritably. He had no intention of dealing with Viper right now; his eyes were fixed tensely on the road ahead, and his grip on his gun was tight.
At the intersection, Battalion Commander Wang's hand holding the binoculars jerked suddenly. He leaned forward slightly.
"They're here. A grey business van, the same one captured by the Sky Eye earlier."
Wang Xuedong turned and lay prone beside Xue Zhikai, extending his rifle and opening the sniper scope.
"Heh, not bad, you actually guessed right. What's the plan?"
"Wait until they're close, then take out the driver first,"
Battalion Commander Wang said in a low voice.
"No need to wait. Let Xiao Jie handle it from this distance; the Electromagnetic Pulse Rifle can take him out easily."
"Oh right, I forgot we have the Electromagnetic Pulse Rifle. I was thinking of letting them get within 500 meters before acting. Can he kill with one shot?"
Battalion Commander Wang turned back and asked Wang Xuedong seriously.
"No problem. That's how we usually train."
After speaking, Wang Xuedong put on his headset.
"Xiao Jie, do you see that grey business van straight ahead? Aim for the driver and take him out!"
"Yes, Captain!"
"Heh, Old Xue, Battalion Commander Wang, in the end, it still has to be our 223rd Brigade. Just wait and watch the show."
Inside the business van,
Viper was a bit speechless. Had these big shots' tempers turned wild too after hunting a round of wild game? They were so dismissive. He was a big deal in these parts, after all, and today his prestige was completely shot. For the sake of the money, he didn't bother to argue.
Viper simply slowed down, felt around in his pocket, and pulled out a cigarette to put in his mouth. One hand gripped the top of the steering wheel while the other pulled out a lighter. He lowered his head, preparing to light the cigarette.
The next second,
The lighter in his right hand exploded with a "Bang!" Viper's eyes had been on the road, and he was about to curse when he suddenly noticed a neat, round hole in the windshield.
Then came the agonizing pain from his hand. Viper glanced down; half of his palm was already gone, and blood was gushing from the wound.
"Ah!!!"
Viper tried to scream but couldn't; only a final, tragic, and long-drawn sound escaped his throat. He didn't even see the bullet hole in his chest before his head slumped to the side. His left hand, still gripping the steering wheel, jerked hard, and the car instantly lost control, veering straight to the left.
"Not good, an ambush!"
Lone Wolf in the passenger seat was the first to react. Seeing the car lose control, he reached over to steer in the opposite direction, but it was a step too late. The car still hurtled toward a large tree nearby. Seeing it was futile, Lone Wolf pulled the handbrake with his left hand and shielded his face with his right.
With a "Boom," the business van came to a halt. Fortunately, the speed at the moment of impact wasn't fast; otherwise, Wang Xuedong and the others wouldn't have even needed to act—Fox Shadow and his team would have met their end right then and there.
Cause of death: car accident.
Fox Shadow shook his head. The impact had given him a slight concussion. He squinted his eyes and finally regained his senses, grabbing the rifle beside him, opening the door, and ducking down.
"Are you guys okay?"
"We're fine, Boss."
"Where did that sniper shot come from? Has Lone Wolf spotted anything?"
Seeing his teammates were mostly unharmed, Fox Shadow looked around tensely.
"The bullet came from the front of the car, but there was no sound. Is it a silencer?"
Fox Shadow didn't reply, only nodding. Then he turned and gave the Big Guy a look. The Big Guy nodded and patted the teammate next to him, and the two of them quickly dashed toward the nearby woods.
They needed to find a suitable spot for sniping.
"Monkey, get your drone out. Scout the surroundings and find us an escape route."
Fox Shadow had seen many such scenes and didn't panic. Monkey nodded, took off his massive backpack, leaned against the car, and began tinkering with his drone.
Soon, a small reconnaissance drone took off. After circling ten meters directly above Fox Shadow and the others, it flew straight toward the path ahead.
Battalion Commander Wang kept his head down, watching the stopped business van through his binoculars. The drone's silhouette appeared clearly in his field of vision. He ducked back down.
"These Mercenaries have quite a lot of gear. They've launched a drone, likely because they don't know where we're ambushing and want to scout us out."
"A drone? I haven't shot one of those before. We can let Xiao Jie and the others try. Since the Electromagnetic Pulse Rifle makes very little sound when firing and has no muzzle flash, it'll be impossible for them to judge our location through the flash."
Wang Xuedong replied calmly, his eyes never leaving the sniper scope.
"You brat, is this place becoming your target range? Fine, it's worth a try."
In the distance, Wang Xuedong's subordinates received the order to fire and immediately aimed at the drone. "Bang! Bang!" Two consecutive bursts were fired, yet they failed to shoot down the drone.
"Shao Jie! You're going to have to keep training when we get back. That drone isn't a stationary target. Do you think just because your weapon is powerful, you can forget all the fundamentals of sniping?"
Wang Xuedong roared into his headset, his previous cockiness instantly vanishing. Hearing his Captain's roar, Shao Jie lowered his head in shame.
"I'll do it, Battalion Commander Wang. We'll be exposed once that thing flies over anyway. Might as well take it out now while it's still far away."
Wang Xuedong turned to look at Battalion Commander Wang, who pondered for a moment before nodding. Wang Xuedong immediately looked into the sniper scope and aimed at the drone.
The humming of the Electromagnetic Kinetic Sniper Rifle rose again. Xue Zhikai watched the glowing arc of bars on the side of the rifle with curiosity. Just as the last bar lit up, a flash of white light streaked past like a shooting star toward the oncoming drone. "Boom!" The drone exploded instantly in mid-air, its shattered remains falling from the sky after a long moment.
"Haha, Wang Xuedong, good job!"
Battalion Commander Wang watched the drone disintegrate in the air through his binoculars and patted Wang Xuedong on the shoulder with his left hand.
Wang Xuedong moved his head away from the sniper scope and looked at Xue Zhikai, his mouth split wide in a grin.
