93: Chapter 93 Waiting for a Rabbit to Run into a Tree Stump
Wang Xuedong retreated helplessly to a corner. The helicopter cabin wasn't as spacious as the "fat girl," and having three grown men squeezed together was already "intimate" enough.
"This is a sniper rifle?"
Division Commander Liao looked at the Electromagnetic Kinetic Sniper Rifle before him, feeling a bit skeptical.
"Does it feel a bit unlike a real gun? Too sci-fi?"
Xue Zhikai added.
"Yeah, exactly. That's the feeling."
"It's called an Electromagnetic Kinetic Sniper Rifle."
Wang Xuedong spoke indignantly from the back. Just then, the aircraft jolted and began its descent; it seemed they had reached their destination.
...
Viper and Lone Wolf were in the front row, each with a cigarette in their mouths, leaning out to check the rain while they smoked.
"Boss, the rain is letting up. Should we head out?"
"Alright. Lone Wolf, tell this brother to hide the car and wait for us here. If we're fast, we'll be back before dark."
"Got it, Boss."
Lone Wolf had clearly already integrated himself as a member of the squad. He turned his head to translate Fox Shadow's words and then patted Viper on the shoulder.
Viper hurriedly nodded in agreement. There was plenty of profit in this trip and the work was easy—just a driver, not some life-threatening job. Viper was inwardly celebrating the deal he'd landed; it was truly worth it.
The rain gradually stopped. Black Bear and the others put on their gear, checked their firearms, and automatically stood in a line, waiting for their leader to speak.
"Alright, brothers, the real test of this operation starts now. I want you to bring your best combat state. We are battle-hardened, while they are used to peace. Besides numbers, your equipment is better than theirs. So, get it done before dark!"
"Yes, Boss."
Viper held back a laugh nearby; so foreigners liked to do this kind of thing too.
"Monkey, how's the drone calibration going? Your gear is the key to this operation."
"No problem, Boss."
"Test your headsets. If there are no issues, we move out."
"Yes! Black Bear copies."
"Yes! Xiao Ge Zi copies."
...
The fully armed six-man squad quickly disappeared from Viper's sight. Viper fished out a cigarette, lit it with a 'snap,' then pulled a pistol from the armrest box, racked the slide, and scanned his surroundings with shifty eyes. He stylishly tucked the pistol into his back waistband and sauntered out of the car.
...
When Wang Xuedong got off the helicopter, he realized that the structure standing in the distance was none other than a Prism Tower.
This was the location of the Prism Tower Base, guarded by the First Division of the Southwest Military Region's border forces.
Wang Xuedong had never seen a Prism Tower before, but he was a guard at the 'Telescope' bunker base, which was the brain of the Prism Towers. Therefore, he knew a fair bit about them.
Seeing a real tower so suddenly, Wang Xuedong no longer cared about Xue Zhikai shamelessly trying to snatch his sniper rifle. He looked at the majestic building in the distance, his heart filled with excitement. This was a true weapon of mass destruction; compared to a Prism Tower, an Electromagnetic Kinetic Sniper Rifle was child's play.
He suddenly understood the meaning behind Division Commander Liao's words.
"Those death-seeking mercenaries... so they were coming for this. Well, they certainly picked the wrong target."
Wang Xuedong was right. US intelligence had failed to identify the Chinese military's deployment dynamics. All the division and brigade units guarding the Prism Towers were the most combat-ready elites of the local military regions. A mere handful of mercenaries thought they could infiltrate? They were probably just looking for trouble.
"What do you mean? You're saying their target is this military base? Are you kidding? With just those few people?"
"To be precise, it's not the military base, but that 'tower'."
After Wang Xuedong finished speaking, he pointed at the Prism Tower. Only then did Xue Zhikai notice the tall structure. However, he didn't know much about military intelligence and didn't understand Wang Xuedong's meaning after looking for a while. He simply gave up and went back to studying the Electromagnetic Kinetic Sniper Rifle.
In the eyes of ordinary people, since you couldn't get close, the Prism Tower just looked like a cell signal tower or something similar from a distance; they never paid it any mind.
"Haha, Captain Wang's guess is correct. We think so too. However, infiltration can also be for reconnaissance, like getting close to take photos. Do you think they're fools? A few people traveling thousands of miles to attack your military base?"
Division Commander Liao remarked casually, his hand reaching for the Electromagnetic Kinetic Sniper Rifle again.
"Oh, right. Our Commander Jiang is at the shooting range. Let's head straight over."
"The shooting range? What do you mean? Holding a military meeting at the range? Now, that's something new."
Division Commander Liao withdrew his hands and didn't answer, leading the way directly. The group of over a dozen people marched grandly toward the base's shooting range.
When they arrived, a middle-aged man in military uniform was practicing. The crisp "bang bang bang" of pistol fire echoed throughout the range.
With a "click," the pistol went silent—it must have locked back on an empty chamber. The middle-aged man turned around.
"You've arrived!"
"Reporting to Commander Jiang, Wang Xuedong leading a total of 6 members from the Special Operations Brigade reporting for duty."
"Reporting to Commander Jiang, Xue Zhikai leading a total of 5 members from the Armed Police Special Operations reporting for duty."
Commander Jiang returned the salute, his eyes fixed intently on the two of them for a long time.
"Do you know why you were called here?"
"Joint operation to eliminate illegal invaders."
Xue Zhikai answered loudly.
"Haha, they don't count as invaders; they're not qualified. If it's just about elimination, the Special Operations Brigade of my First Border Division is no slouch. Why would I go to the trouble of bringing you all here?"
Wang Xuedong and the other man looked at each other, a bit confused. Wang Xuedong scratched his head, and seeing the Electromagnetic Kinetic Sniper Rifle in his hand, a sudden flash of inspiration hit him.
"I know. It's more about testing these two new rifles in actual combat, right?"
"Mm, that's only one reason. Secondly, the reason we haven't launched a massive campaign to surround and suppress them is that we want to wait for the rabbit. We'll use our new weapons to crush their arrogance and kill the chicken to warn the monkey. As for who the monkey is, we have our own judgment."
"This operation will serve as a performance for those countries to see—a warning. Don't go making these little moves whenever you feel like it. China is no longer what it used to be!!!"
Commander Jiang nodded with a smile, speaking words that were profound and stirring.
Wang Xuedong and Xue Zhikai followed with heavy nods. They were Chinese and naturally understood the Chinese way of handling things.
Courtesy before force. Since the dishes were on the table, the "wine" naturally couldn't be missing.
"Haha, Captain Wang, since there's nothing else to do, how about we try out the new guns? The higher-ups have their plans, and I have mine. This is something I pushed hard for. I want to see for myself what's so special about these two new guns, so my efforts in arguing with the General Armaments Department weren't in vain."
"Ah? Haha. No problem, Commander. They've already practiced with the Electromagnetic Pulse Rifles quite thoroughly."
