151: Chapter 151 General, this is just a mass-produced model.
One week later, in Washington State, at the "Sandbox" special testing ground directly under The Pentagon.
This was one of the U Federation's top military testing bases, costing tens of billions of dollars to replicate an entire desert in the interior that was almost identical to the Middle East in terms of terrain, climate, and electromagnetic environment.
At this moment, inside the underground observation bunker, the atmosphere was so heavy it could be wrung out like water.
Beyond the half-meter-thick bulletproof glass wall lay air distorted by the scorching sun and boundless yellow sand.
Beside the long conference table sat a row of big shots with stars glittering on their shoulders. At the head was General Clark. His expression was calm, but his fingers tapped unconsciously on the tabletop, betraying the turmoil within him.
"Mr. Chen, you said your new product could change the nature of desert warfare; I hope it is not a waste of our time." A white-haired Army lieutenant general glanced at the clock on the wall, his tone carrying a hint of arrogance and impatience.
Everyone present today was a power player from various departments of The Pentagon. To gather them all in this godforsaken place, Clark had certainly paid a heavy price.
Chen Feng sat beside Clark, dressed in casual business attire, looking completely out of place among the generals in their crisp military uniforms.
"General Martin, patience is a virtue. Especially when waiting to witness a miracle."
"A miracle?" Lieutenant General Martin scoffed. "Young man, when I was fighting for this country, you weren't even born yet. Don't be too arrogant."
Clark raised his hand to interrupt him: "Martin, watch quietly."
He knew very well that what was to be demonstrated today would completely subvert these old fossils' understanding of war.
Chen Feng ignored him further and simply said into the communicator in his hand: "You may begin."
On the massive screen directly in front of the observation room, the image was divided into four. Three of them were real-time feeds from different areas of the desert. The last one was a tactical map of the entire testing ground.
On the map, an armored squad consisting of three M1A2 main battle tanks and two Bradley infantry fighting vehicles representing the military was slowly advancing in combat formation. Before them lay a newly laid minefield consisting of anti-tank mines and high-explosive sensor mines.
For any ground unit to breach this wall of steel without triggering the minefield would be a pipe dream.
"Where is your product?" Lieutenant General Martin looked around, seeing nothing entering the field.
Chen Feng smiled but said nothing, simply pointing at the tactical map.
The moment his finger landed, three barely visible red dots on the edge of the map flashed once and then vanished without a trace.
"What was that?" a technical officer in charge of monitoring exclaimed. "The radar signal only lasted 0.5 seconds before it was gone! It's like they burrowed underground!"
"Burrowed?" Lieutenant General Martin frowned. "What is it?"
No one answered him. Everyone's eyes were glued to the map.
The next second, a hair-raising scene unfolded. The three red dots reappeared; the radar system, after special calibration, could barely track their high-speed movement trajectories beneath the sand layer.
"My god..." the technical officer's voice was trembling. "Underground movement speed... is skyrocketing! Sixty kilometers... seventy... eighty-five... stabilizing at ninety kilometers per hour!"
"What?!" Lieutenant General Martin stood up abruptly from his chair, almost plastering himself against the glass wall, staring intently at the calm desert surface outside.
Ninety kilometers per hour? Underground? What a joke! The U Federation's most advanced earth-boring equipment would have to pop champagne to celebrate reaching a speed of five kilometers per hour in desert terrain!
On the screen, those three red dots were like three invisible sharks, carving three straight trajectories beneath the sea of sand, easily bypassing the armored unit and passing directly through the deepest part of the minefield.
Those anti-tank mines didn't even make a muffled sound; they had become completely useless.
"They're coming! The target is the armored squad!" Before the words even faded, "Boom! Boom! Boom!" Three massive explosions erupted from the desert almost simultaneously!
On the flanks of the three M1A2 tanks, yellow sand shot into the sky as three hideous, terrifying figures burst from the earth!
These were simply not any creature known to humanity! They were over three meters long, resembling Earth's scorpions, but their entire bodies were covered in dark golden scales that glinted with a cold metallic luster.
They lacked the massive pincers of a scorpion; in their place were two pairs of forelimbs like harvester blades, flashing with a cold light capable of tearing through steel. Most terrifying of all was the high-arched tail stinger; at its tip was not a poison needle, but a biological tissue muzzle that kept contracting as if it were breathing!
"Fire! Fire!" The armored squad commander's roar came through the communication channel.
The 25mm chain gun on the infantry fighting vehicle roared first, and a dense hail of bullets instantly covered one of the monsters.
"Clang, clang, clang—" A series of crisp metallic clashing sounds accompanied the scattering sparks. The monster, named "Walker," was merely shaken by the kinetic energy of the bullets, and the dark golden scales on its body were left with nothing but shallow white marks!
"Damn it! Armor-piercing rounds are ineffective against it!"
In the observation room, Lieutenant General Martin's eyes were practically popping out of his head. And it wasn't over yet.
The other two Walkers had already pounced onto the M1A2 tanks. One of them plunged its bladed forelimbs into the tank's turret joint and heaved with all its might!
"Screech—" Amidst the teeth-gritting sound of twisting metal, the multi-ton tank turret was forcibly ripped right off its chassis!
The other one was even simpler and more brutal; it used those two pairs of terrifying blades to frantically slash at the tank's side armor, and in just a few seconds, it tore a huge hole in the thick composite armor!
The entire process, from their bursting from the earth to the three main battle tanks being completely scrapped, took less than thirty seconds.
The remaining two infantry fighting vehicles hadn't even had time to turn their turrets before they were targeted by the high-arched tail stingers of the "Walkers." "Pfft! Pfft!"
Two blobs of highly compressed acidic corrosive liquid shot out at supersonic speeds, precisely hitting the vehicles' cockpits. The special alloy armor melted rapidly in the face of the strong acid like ice and snow, and the dummies inside the cockpits instantly dissolved into a puddle of liquid emitting white smoke.
The battle was over. From start to finish, less than forty-five seconds. The entire underground observation room was deathly silent.
All the generals stood up, their faces filled with shock, fanaticism, and a hint of deep-seated fear.
Lieutenant General Martin's mouth hung open, a "he-he" sound rattling in his throat as he couldn't get a single word out. The "scrap metal" he had been mocking just moments ago had, in the blink of an eye, torn his prized ace armored unit to shreds with a god-like, demonic prowess.
"Mr.... Mr. Chen..." A naval admiral swallowed hard, his gaze toward Chen Feng having completely changed. "What... what kind of monster is this?"
Chen Feng said slowly: "This is the B-07 'Walker,' the flagship mass-produced Bio-Organic Weapon (BOW) produced by Umbrella."
"Mass... mass-produced?" You call this monster in front of us, which can withstand chain guns and tear apart tanks with its bare hands, mass-produced?! What must the non-mass-produced ones be like?
In an instant, the breathing of all the generals grew heavy. The way they looked at Chen Feng was no longer with scrutiny, but like a pack of starving wolves seeing the fattest of lambs.
Clark took a deep look at Chen Feng; he knew this kid was playing his usual games again. "Price." Clark asked directly.
Chen Feng held up one finger. "One hundred million US dollars each."
"Hiss—" A collective gasp of cold air filled the conference room. One hundred million US dollars? To buy one monster? Why don't you just go rob someone!
However, Chen Feng's next words made their hearts skip a beat again. "Of course, this is a friends-and-family price. After all, General Clark and I are old friends. If we went through The Pentagon's normal procurement process, considering research and development costs, intellectual property, and long-term maintenance, the price would at least double."
Yet, he sneered in his heart. He had buried more than one surprise in the genetic sequence of this batch of "Walkers." For instance, their neurotoxin's activity would be halved in high temperatures; or, for example, their scales' structural integrity would plummet by over 70% after more than half an hour of sustained high-intensity combat.
All of these were effects carefully concocted by Samantha. But this group of generals, blinded by victory, could never imagine such things.
"I want five hundred!" Clark slammed the table and said decisively, "Within a month, I want to see the first batch delivered to the Middle East front line! Money is not an issue!"
Five hundred! That was fifty billion US dollars! Even though Chen Feng had anticipated it, he was still slightly shocked by Clark's "unlimited budget" grand gesture.
He feigned difficulty and frowned: "General, five hundred... our production capacity is under great pressure. Cultivating these 'Walkers' requires a large amount of rare biological protein and energy; one month is too tight."
"I will grant you the highest priority for resource allocation! Whatever you need, the military will provide! I have only one requirement: speed!" Clark's eyes were bloodshot as he stared intensely at Chen Feng.
"Since the General has said so..." Chen Feng nodded reluctantly. "Very well, I will do my best."
The deal was struck. Looking at the remains of the few creatures being recovered on the screen, and the group of U Federation power elites beside him who were going crazy over it, a cold, imperceptible sneer curled the corner of Chen Feng's mouth.
The fifty-billion-dollar arms order was just an appetizer. Once the meat grinder of war started, the real money pit wouldn't be these disposable consumables.
His gaze seemed to pierce through the thick walls, casting toward that desert destined to soon flow with blood.
"War will cause U Federation soldiers to be injured, bleed, and even die. And when that time comes, what price will they pay for the ruisu, healing factor, or even more advanced battlefield emergency products that can save their lives? The King of War never just sells spears. Shields are often even more expensive."
