91: Chapter 91 The Most Perfect Experimental Material
Sarah tossed the empty coke can into the trash bin, which let out a crisp clatter.
"Refreshing."
She let out a long sigh of relief. This sense of ease, radiating from her very bones, was something she had never experienced since becoming a police officer.
"How do you feel?" Chen Feng leaned against the breakroom doorframe, an unopened can of coke in his hand.
"Great." Sarah rolled her neck, her joints letting out several crisp pops. "I used to think the law was the only standard. Now I realize that when dealing with some pieces of trash, fists are ten thousand times more effective than a legal code."
Her gaze was calm—no post-vengeance madness, no post-killing unease. It was as if she had simply finished tidying up some household trash.
Chen Feng smiled but didn't respond.
He only hoped the Ouroboros Virus hadn't completely reshaped her worldview.
"What are your plans now?" Chen Feng asked.
"I don't know." Sarah was uncharacteristically lost. "My goal used to be becoming the Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department. Now... I've even thrown away my badge."
She paused and looked at Chen Feng. "What about you? You've created so many monsters; surely you're not planning to open a zoo?"
"I don't know either." Chen Feng popped the tab on his coke and took a sip. "Maybe it'll turn out just as you said."
Sarah watched him, a strange glint flashing in her azure eyes. She didn't press further, merely nodding.
"Alright, go take a shower and get some sleep."
After watching Sarah leave, the relaxed look on Chen Feng's face gradually faded as he turned back to his office.
He opened the system interface.
[Main Quest: Dawn of 'Eternal']
[Quest Description: Unlock and complete the research and development of the 'Eternal' serum.]
[Prerequisite Technology Requirements:]
[1. T-Virus Research Specialization (Progress: 100%, Completed)]
[2. G-Virus Research Specialization (Progress: 65%, Bottleneck: Lacking critical clinical trial data)]
[3. Plaga Parasite Research Specialization (Progress: 65%, Bottleneck: Lacking live symbiotic evolution data)]
Chen Feng's fingers tapped lightly on the desk. His gaze fell on the two stagnant progress bars at the bottom, giving him a slight headache.
For the T-Virus research, thanks to the initial vagrants and the 'gift package' that was the Vanguard Bureau's Rain Squad, he had finally gathered enough experimental data to reach 100% completion.
But the G-Virus and the Plaga Parasite wouldn't be that simple.
The G-Virus was too unstable. If it went out of control, the resulting monsters would be even more terrifying and uncontrollable than Tyrants. Chen Feng didn't dare use just any vagrants for experiments; if he accidentally created a colossal beast like William Birkin in Los Angeles, things would get way out of hand.
The Plaga Parasite was even more troublesome. It required symbiosis with a host to observe the evolutionary process. This required extremely strict screening of hosts and touched upon humanitarian red lines.
To put it bluntly, he was short on 'consumables'.
He lacked a sufficient amount of human subjects—people whose deaths wouldn't be missed—to conduct various breakthrough experiments.
"Boss, not asleep yet?"
Sarah's voice came from the doorway. She had changed into a clean tracksuit, her wet golden hair draped over her shoulders, her face flushed from the bath.
"Can't sleep. Ran into some trouble." Chen Feng looked at the virtual screen in front of him; of course, Sarah couldn't see the system panel.
"What kind of trouble? Do you need me to break someone's legs?" Sarah asked half-jokingly, though her tone was serious.
Chen Feng was amused by her. "It's not that simple. I have two new projects stuck at the clinical trial stage. I'm lacking suitable experimental subjects."
"Experimental subjects?" Sarah walked to his side and asked curiously, "Experiments like the ones that modified those monsters?"
"Similar in nature, but the risks are higher and the failure rate is greater," Chen Feng admitted. "I can't find enough volunteers who meet the criteria."
He sighed. "I can't exactly go out and snatch people off the street, can I? I'm not a truly evil person."
A brief silence fell over the office.
Sarah looked at Chen Feng's furrowed brows, her mind replaying the faces of the drug dealers she had seen tonight at the repair shop and the casino.
Those scumbags sucked the marrow from others and destroyed countless families, yet lived lives of luxury through money and violence. Their deaths would be an absolute benefit to the world.
A crazy idea emerged uncontrollably in her mind.
"Chen," Sarah's tone was calm, "what do you think about the South American drug dealers?"
"What about them?" Chen Feng was stunned, not catching her drift.
"I mean," Sarah's gaze grew sharp, "how about using them as experimental subjects?"
Chen Feng's hand, holding the coke, froze in mid-air.
He snapped his head around, staring intently at Sarah, trying to find a trace of a joke on her face.
But there was none.
Sarah's expression was incredibly serious, her eyes clear and determined.
A cold sweat instantly broke out on Chen Feng's back.
Holy crap!
This awareness, this train of thought—it was wilder than his own as a transmigrator with a cheat system!
A former Deputy Chief of the LAPD was actively suggesting using living people—and members of a massive cartel at that—as consumables for biological experiments?
The world was changing too fast; he could barely keep up.
"Are you... serious?" Chen Feng's voice was a bit dry.
"I am very serious." Sarah walked to the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out at the Los Angeles night. "I've been a cop for so many years. I've personally sent no fewer than eight hundred to a thousand drug dealers to prison. But so what? They go in, and someone new takes their place immediately. Their families throw parties in mansions in Colombia, and their lawyers can turn black into white. To scumbags like them, the law is a joke."
She turned around, her deep blue eyes staring directly at Chen Feng. "Let me repeat: I am serious, Chen."
Chen Feng fell silent.
He had to admit, Sarah was right.
Furthermore, this proposal perfectly solved his urgent problem.
Those drug lords were ruthless, their hands stained with blood. Turning them into petri dishes for the G-Virus wouldn't weigh on Chen Feng's conscience at all.
And since they were tightly organized and numerous, they were practically an inexhaustible 'resource library' of subjects!
"Your idea... is bold." Chen Feng finally spoke, looking at Sarah with a complex gaze. "But it's also perfect."
He hesitated no longer, picking up the satellite phone on the desk and dialing General Clark's number.
The phone rang for a long time before being picked up. Clark's voice came from the other end, heavy with sleep: "Chen? Do you know what time it is? Unless a missile is incoming, I suggest you have a very good reason."
"Sorry to disturb you so late." Chen Feng got straight to the point. "I need a transport plane capable of flying directly to Colombia, as soon as possible. Also, I need intelligence on all high-ranking members of the 'Serpent' Cartel."
Clark was silent for a few seconds on the other end, seemingly processing the information.
"Chen, Colombia is a sovereign nation. I can't just send the military over. Besides, the 'Serpent' Cartel's ties with the local government are deeply intertwined. What are you planning to do?"
"I didn't say anything about sending the military." Chen Feng's tone was light. "It's just that my new secretary wants to take a vacation in South America. I need you to provide transportation and a travel guide."
Clark understood instantly.
"Fine," his voice carried a hint of exhaustion and resignation. "I'll act as if I heard nothing. In one hour, a C-17 transport plane will be waiting on your company's roof. The intelligence will be sent to your terminal in encrypted form shortly. Chen, don't let things get out of hand."
"Don't worry, General. We're a professional team."
Hanging up the phone, Chen Feng looked at Sarah and smiled.
"Alright, Secretary Mitchell, your first business trip has arrived."
He stood up, walked over to Sarah, and helped straighten the collar of her tracksuit.
"Mission objective: The 'Serpent' Cartel headquarters. I will give you a vial of the G-Virus original strain. Your task is to find a way to inject it into the cartel's boss, Escobar."
"The G-Virus?"
"A virus that causes terrifying mutations in its host, but fortunately, it isn't contagious and is easy to control. Once Escobar mutates, he will turn his own lair into a living hell, destroying the entire cartel from within." Chen Feng explained, "And what you need to do is record everything and collect the data I need."
He paused and added, "Of course, you won't be going alone."
Chen Feng pressed the office's internal intercom.
"Marcus, come to my office. Notify the sixth basement level to activate Unit B-05-01, T-501-1, and T-501-5. Also, bring four of the best-conditioned 'Hellhounds'. Prepare to move out. Destination: Colombia."
