52: Seed breeding hotbed

Lu Fan returned to the Shelter with Da Hei and Big Horn, humming a cheerful little tune; Big Horn went back to its shed.

Since Da Hei didn't have a place to live yet, Lu Fan used bamboo to build a kennel for it, lining the inside with some dry leaves.

After all, canines like sleeping in dens.

When Lu Fan gestured that this was Da Hei's kennel, Da Hei looked at him with an expression of disbelief.

It bounced around Lu Fan, then crawled into its kennel, leaving only its head poking out.

In the livestream room.

“Hahaha, Da Hei looks so happy.”

“We have a saying here: ‘Dogs love narrow spaces, cats love warm places.’”

“I seriously suspect Da Hei is a Husky; it's so silly.”

A good night's sleep.

The next morning, the sunlight playfully danced on Lu Fan's face, waking up the wilderness survival expert.

Stretching his limbs, Lu Fan began to ponder today's foraging plan.

Remembering the Taro patch he had found earlier, he decided to go dig up some more.

“Da Hei, Big Horn, let's go dig up something tasty today!” At Lu Fan's command, his two companions instantly perked up and followed behind him as they set off on their journey.

Along the way, Da Hei acted like a scout, jumping left and right in front, occasionally sniffing the grass by the roadside and startling swarms of small flying insects.

Big Horn sauntered along, swaying its head and occasionally nibbling on a few tender blades of grass, as if taking a leisurely stroll through the countryside.

When they reached the Taro patch, Lu Fan was stunned.

It turned out that without him realizing it, he had already dug up most of the Taro here.

What was once a lush Taro patch now only had a few plants left; he dug into the soil with high expectations, only to find that there were just two Taros left.

“I still overlooked its growth rate.” Lu Fan scratched his head helplessly; this was tricky.

In the livestream room.

“Ah, only two Taros left?”

“I always thought Great God Lu Fan would never run out of food.”

“What should we do? Taro is an important source of carbohydrates.”

But Lu Fan was not someone who would be easily defeated by such a small difficulty.

Looking at the two round Taros in his hand, he quickly came up with an idea: “I've got it! If I take them back and plant them, won't I have an endless supply of Taro in the future?”

No sooner said than done, he carefully tucked the Taros into his chest, as if he were carrying two rare treasures.

Back at the Shelter, Lu Fan began to plan his grand farming project.

Of course, this wasn't something to be rushed; first, he had to cultivate the Taro seeds.

He planned to make a simple Breeding Room.

Lu Fan found some bamboo and split it into thin strips.

Then he went back to his old trade—weaving baskets.

Only this time, the weave was tighter and thinner.

During the weaving process, Da Hei would lean in from time to time to take a sniff.

“Shoo, shoo, don't interrupt my serious work.” He said, pushing Da Hei's big face away.

In the livestream room.

“What is Great God Lu Fan doing?”

“Such a large basket, could it be a new kennel for Da Hei?”

“I don't get it, but I believe Great God Lu Fan must have a great use for it.”

Finally, after more than two hours, Lu Fan finished weaving a large basket, as big as a bathtub.

“Finished, that really exhausted me.” Lu Fan looked at the large basket with satisfaction.

To be precise, this was a miniature Greenhouse.

Next, Lu Fan found a patch of land and drew a rectangle on the ground.

Then he shoveled some charcoal ash from the fire and piled it on the ground.

Next, Lu Fan found some dry grass and spread it over the charcoal ash, forming a small hotbed.

Then he cut the two Taros into different pieces and placed them on the hotbed.

He also crushed the remaining dried chili peppers, took out their seeds, and buried them in the hotbed.

He sprinkled water on the hotbed to ensure it was moist, then covered it with the “Greenhouse.”

A miniature Seed Cultivation Hotbed was completed.

Looking at his masterpiece, Lu Fan nodded with satisfaction.

Now, all that was left was to wait for the seeds to sprout.

In the livestream room, the barrage comments rolled like a tide as the audience engaged in a heated discussion about Lu Fan's miniature Seed Cultivation Hotbed.

“This move is so awesome! Great God Lu Fan always manages to turn the seemingly impossible into reality.

With just these two Taros, he's actually planned out a future ‘grain field’.” Wang Tao was not stingy with his praise, his words full of admiration.

Zhao Hangjun then started his science popularization mode: “Did you know? Lu Fan's hotbed design is very scientific.

Charcoal ash can provide a certain amount of insulation and pest control, while spreading dry grass on top keeps the soil loose and breathable, creating a good environment for seed germination.

And this ‘Greenhouse’ he made can effectively maintain internal humidity and temperature, just like creating an exclusive little Greenhouse for the seeds, greatly increasing the germination rate.”

“I see, no wonder Great God succeeds every time; there's a scientific basis behind it all,” a viewer realized.

“I thought he was just messing around before, but I didn't expect there to be so much to it. I've learned something new.”

“I knew that big basket Great God wove must have a great use; using it as a ‘Greenhouse’ is perfect.”

“Haha, so that means Lu Fan will be able to achieve self-sufficiency in the future.”

“I remember when I was in school, I'd sprinkle water on the wood shavings from a pencil sharpener and put watermelon seeds in to wait for them to sprout.”

“As expected, farming and infrastructure are pursuits etched into the bones of Huaguo people.”

“Looking forward to the day Great God Lu Fan grows crops.”

At this point, Wang Tao couldn't help but comment again: “Contestant Lu Fan's indomitable and self-sufficient approach is a true reflection of our Huaguo's development.

Just as Contestant Lu Fan is planting the seeds for a future harvest today, one day, our Huaguo will also break free from resource constraints and achieve sustainable development.”

Meanwhile, Da Hei and Big Horn circled the hotbed curiously.

Da Hei would sniff the “Greenhouse” from time to time, seemingly trying to figure out what treasure was hidden inside.

Big Horn gently pawed the soil next to it with its hooves, as if contributing in its own way to this land of hope.

While the seeds were in the cultivation stage, preparations could be made for farming in advance.

Lu Fan decided to do one more thing, which was to prepare fertilizer.

He remembered the method of making fertilizer he had seen in the village in his previous life—Composting.

First, he found a relatively hidden and well-drained corner near the Shelter to serve as the Composting site.

Then he prepared to collect some leaves.
