22: The zombie virus broke out ahead of schedule.
Si Nan looked closely; the ice pellets were larger and denser than before, obscuring her vision. Radio broadcasts were reporting the eerie weather and reminding everyone to be careful when traveling.
She slowed down to a crawl and stopped at the supermarket entrance to continue her shopping spree. Perhaps because of the ice pellets, others were also stocking up like her, but no one else was pushing two large shopping carts at once, filled so high they seemed to touch the clouds.
At the checkout, everyone looked at her with strange expressions. The people originally behind her in line moved to other queues, preferring to be at the very end of another line rather than stay behind her.
Si Nan didn't care about any of that. While waiting, she casually picked out some chewing gum. But then she realized that this stuff couldn't actually be eaten to stay full, so she quickly put it back and swapped it for a few bottles of fruit gummies instead.
By the time she reached the fourth store, it felt like she was driving over steel balls; the sound beneath her tires was exceptionally loud, yet the number of pedestrians on the road had surged. Due to the sudden severe weather, major companies had to let employees off early, and the traffic jam stretched out like a long dragon.
Seeing that things weren't looking right, Si Nan quickly drove her small truck back to the villa and then walked to the nearest supermarket to continue stocking up. That was until her phone rang incessantly, and the Warehouse Supervisor's anxious voice came through, "Si Nan, get here quickly to unload goods!"
"Huh? Now? Didn't Xia Mi go?" Si Nan was a bit reluctant because Century Department Store was still quite a distance away, and it was currently peak traffic hour. However, if she didn't go and the zombies suddenly broke out, she needed to be close by to empty the warehouse.
"Xia Mi said she's still not over her illness and won't come even if it kills her." The supervisor on the other end was frantic.
"Alright, I'm coming." Si Nan made a decisive choice. She jogged all the way home, bundled herself up until only her big, beautiful eyes were showing, and sped off on her electric scooter.
Believe it or not, listening to the symphony of ice pellets hitting her helmet, she quickly wove through the gaps in the endless traffic jam to reach Century Department Store. She found a safe, hidden corner to park her electric scooter and sprinted all the way to the truck fleet at the back door.
"Si Nan, hurry! This might take a bit longer tonight. Anyway, with this hellish weather, you won't be working tomorrow, so just put in some extra effort."
The Warehouse Supervisor looked at her as if she were a savior. They were so short-handed that even she had to personally unload the goods.
Si Nan smiled happily. "The supervisor is too kind. I'm tough and sturdy, it's no problem."
Even if there was a problem, she'd make sure there wasn't. The more goods that were moved into the warehouse, the happier she was; after all, these would all be hers.
Everyone thought this sudden violent ice pellet storm would stop quickly, but it didn't let up for seven days and seven nights. This led to a near-total paralysis of traffic. Relevant departments worked 24 hours a day to clear the roads, and hospitals were already overcrowded.
Si Nan hadn't been able to go back either. The Warehouse Supervisor, fearing she wouldn't have anyone to unload goods if Si Nan left, made an exception and took her to the guest room in the adjacent grand hotel provided for their supervisors.
Si Nan was naturally happy. She had a free stay in a star-rated hotel that was so warm she could wear a bikini. The only downside was that she had to pay for her own breakfast.
When she wasn't unloading goods, she was frantically stocking up nearby. Luo Sen hadn't asked her for the other 5 million in renovation fees; during this time, he sent her a WeChat message saying there was a slight accident with his work and he'd be back late, asking if she was doing okay.
She earnestly advised Luo Sen that he must return early, or it would be too late.
She didn't know if Luo Sen listened, but she happily took the 20,000 yuan Wang Meilan had paid her in compensation to buy three down jackets she liked and even got her hair done.
Now, combined with the fact that she had lost a significant amount of weight, she was breathtakingly beautiful.
"Oh, my beautiful supervisor is truly a sweetheart, letting me stay upstairs in advance so I can empty our own massive warehouse, oww-woo~"
Walking back, Si Nan almost couldn't stop herself from snorting with laughter. There were only three days left until the zombie outbreak, and she had to find the right opportunity to strike.
The only thing that made her unhappy during these seven days was that Wang Meilan had been taken home to be cared for due to heart disease, and her prison sentence was suspended. "That's fine too. Let that Old Woman experience the despair of the Apocalypse before she dies; it won't be too late. The important thing is to get down to business. I have another batch of goods to unload tonight."
Si Nan strolled over to the warehouse entrance of Century Department Store, intentionally glancing at the security room as she passed.
Inside, the two bachelors on duty were stunned when they saw the beautiful Si Nan arrive, their eyes instantly lighting up. "Si Nan, you're here too early. Come inside and hide from the ice pellets."
"Huh? Too early? Isn't it almost eight o'clock?"
Si Nan intentionally feigned shock and hurriedly took out her phone to check the time, saying with an exaggerated expression, "Oh my god, I misread the time. I mistook a 6 for an 8."
But she didn't go in. "I'd better not. Your security room shouldn't let outsiders in."
One of them had already opened the electronic door. "Don't worry about that at a time like this. We've known each other for more than a day or two. Just come in."
"Well, thanks. This weather is truly unbearable. Even bundling myself up like a rice dumpling isn't enough." As soon as Si Nan entered, her eyes swept around. Her gaze passed over the glass cabinet filled with keys, and she smirked with satisfaction; she had already spotted the spare warehouse keys.
Just as she was about to exchange a few pleasantries with the two men, the supervisor's call came. "Si Nan, come down. The goods arrived early."
"Coming!" Si Nan responded and walked out of the security room.
The two men behind her watched her figure, jealousy flaring between them. "Si Nan is so beautiful and such a nice person. I've decided to pursue her."
"Forget about it, kid. She's mine!"
"What do you mean yours? Whoever catches her first gets her—"
Unaware of their conversation, Si Nan checked her electric scooter before going to unload the goods. It was covered tightly with a rain tarp, which was good.
Three ten-meter-long trucks were parked side-by-side at the warehouse's back door. Including the supervisor, there were only three people, and the other young man was someone the supervisor had pulled in temporarily.
The three truck drivers had all gone to the hospital across the street to have hot pot; they were exhausted.
Sure enough, right after finishing one truck, the other young man quit, making an excuse to slip away. Only she and the supervisor were left.
The supervisor's gaze toward Si Nan was full of gratitude. "How about this? Quit your other job and follow me. You're so hardworking and not afraid of hardship; I guarantee you'll be promoted quickly. What do you think?"
During a break, the supervisor said with a smile while leaning against the front of a truck.
"Really? That's wonderful." Si Nan responded with exaggeration. Work? Soon, everyone would be finished.
But building up some goodwill wasn't bad; perhaps it would make her actions easier.
"Hahaha, good! I've gained another fierce warrior. Leave this to me. Hurry and open the truck door; let's each take a truck and see who finishes first. The loser treats!"
The supervisor laughed loudly as she opened the truck door in front of her.
"Alright, then you're definitely going to lose." Si Nan readily agreed and also opened the door in front of her. Just as their hands touched the goods, they heard a blood-curdling scream from the hospital across the street.
"What's going on?" The supervisor and Si Nan looked across at the same time and saw a scene of people pouncing on and biting each other in the third-floor corridor of the hospital. The hospital security guards were trying to stop it.
"This familiar scene—" Si Nan had a bad premonition. Could her jinxing have come true? Had the zombie virus really broken out ahead of schedule?
"My god, did that patient get Rabies?" The supervisor's face turned pale as she let out a gasp.
"Roar~" Right then, the three truck drivers who had gone to eat returned covered in blood. Upon seeing the supervisor and Si Nan, they suddenly charged over like madmen.
