93: Tell me quickly, how did your boyfriend do that?
This evergreen tree was lush and vibrant, as if it were growing in spring. More bizarrely, this variety of ivy is one that doesn't flower or bear fruit, yet right now it had bloomed, and the entire tree was covered in flower buds.
Si Nan was afraid she had misseen, so she steered the wheel closer. Through the glass window, she saw clearly—she hadn't been mistaken. The entire evergreen tree was covered in terrifying virus buds.
When these buds matured, once they opened, they would release virus spore powder. Any living creature that inhaled it would similarly turn into a zombie.
Only when Si Nan looked down did she understand. A zombie corpse lay at the base of the tree. That zombie had died clutching the bottom of the evergreen tree, and all the black blood flowing from its wounds had irrigated the tree, causing this ivy to mutate, flower, and bear fruit.
"This tree cannot stay." Si Nan stopped the car. It wasn't far from her house. If the buds matured and were hit by something, they would fly everywhere. What if she inhaled them?
"Mm-hmm, Sen Sen will go down and chop it." Luo Sen brandished his military shovel, looking ready to 'go all out'.
Si Nan stopped him and drove the car forward a bit. "No need to chop it. Big Sister will take you to play something fun, but you can't play this at home, okay?"
"Mm-hmm, Sen Sen remembers." As usual, Luo Sen got out first to drive away nearby zombies. Si Nan confirmed the surroundings and got out, taking a barrel of gasoline from her space to pour over the roots and top, then handed it to Luo Sen to light the fire.
"Boom~" The fire suddenly leaped very high.
Luo Sen was very happy. "This is fun."
The fire blazed from bottom to top. Si Nan waited for a while, seeing the fire was going well, then she and Luo Sen retreated back into the car. After they left, the surrounding zombies gathered around, squatting around the tree to keep warm.
Si Nan drove a bit faster toward another area, a place she hadn't been to before. It was mostly a mixed-use shopping and residential plaza area, a place that had just been developed the year her parents had their accident.
It was a bit far from her house, but there were more storefronts than the previous two streets combined. Perhaps she could scavenge some good things.
The morning search had given her a taste of success, but the evergreen tree just now gave her a sense of crisis. She wanted to claim territory and wall off a city early, creating an area for herself to move around in.
"Big Sister, stop the car. Sen Sen needs to pee." While she was lost in thought, Luo Sen suddenly spoke.
Si Nan had no choice but to stop and wait for him. She looked ahead; luckily Sen Sen needed to pee, as the road ahead was completely blocked by various cars covered in white snow. Although the Armored Vehicle could clear a path, how long would it take to ram through all that?
She had a sudden idea and turned onto a side road. This road ran parallel to the main road but had few cars. Beside it were fields, with endless wheat planted under the white snow.
Unfortunately, there were also scattered zombies in the wheat field, which pounced toward her quickly upon seeing her.
"Big Sister, those, kill kill kill." Luo Sen pointed at the densely packed zombies pouncing toward them.
Si Nan called him back. "Quick, come in. We won't kill them; let's keep looking for good food."
"Coming." With a leap, Luo Sen was already back in the car.
Si Nan saw his smooth movements and shook her head with a smile. There was nothing to scavenge on the road until they reached the plaza, which looked particularly desolate at first glance.
The entire area was a square-shaped living district. In the very center were three staggered high-rise buildings, which looked dark and gloomy, possibly due to the bad weather.
Si Nan knew there must be many zombies inside. There were many wandering zombie aunties and old men in the open plaza nearby, not to mention inside.
Her gaze lingered on those three towering buildings. These three were office and shopping floors, so there would naturally be many good things.
"Hahaha, we came to the right place." She pointed at the three high-rises for Luo Sen to see and laughed loudly.
Luo Sen, however, said, "Many bad people."
The "bad people" he referred to were zombies. He then laughed happily again. "Not afraid. With Sen Sen here, Sen Sen will protect Big Sister."
"Then let's get to work." Si Nan suddenly felt an inexhaustible amount of energy. After finishing these three high-rises, they could head back. If they could find some more food supplies, that would be even better.
"Work, work! Big Sister, hold hands." Luo Sen bossily grabbed Si Nan's hand, leading her step by step toward the central area. The surrounding zombies tried to pounce but were scared off by Luo Sen's roar.
However, these zombies didn't leave; they followed behind them, quickly gathering into a dense crowd. Si Nan didn't even dare to look back.
She thought about it; the Armored Vehicle was too far from the central area. What if someone tried to steal her Armored Vehicle again like this morning?
So she turned back and immediately put the Armored Vehicle into her space. Only then did she feel at ease letting Luo Sen lead her.
There are always sharp-eyed survivors. They didn't see Si Nan put away the Armored Vehicle, but they saw the swarms of zombies following the two of them without attacking or biting.
"How is this possible?" That person wanted to take out a phone to record it all, but unfortunately, the phone had long since run out of power. The Authorities used to provide power for two hours every day at noon, but strangely, the power hasn't come on today.
The man regretted immensely that he had used up all the power in the morning; otherwise, he could have captured this eerie scene. On second thought, the man suddenly had an epiphany. "Could those two holding hands also be zombies? It must be so; otherwise, it's impossible for them not to be attacked."
With that thought, he stopped following Si Nan with his eyes.
Luo Sen was very fast, quickly leading Si Nan to the first and nearest high-rise. It could be said that zombies were everywhere inside, a real mess. They were all people who enjoyed nightlife and had stayed here when the virus broke out.
"Roar~" Perhaps they were extremely hungry, as these zombies still pounced. After Luo Sen roared, more than half were scared away, while the remaining small half still pounced.
Si Nan brandished her military shovel and fought side-by-side with Luo Sen, hand-in-hand. She killed one while Luo Sen killed ten in an instant. That guy had somehow awakened some strange power; he picked up an electric scooter with his bare hands and hurled it. It was a brilliant move, knocking down a large group.
The battle lasted for three minutes. All the zombies feared Luo Sen and retreated.
Si Nan observed these zombies carefully. They were evolving too fast; their stiff bodies and movements had become much more flexible, and their intelligence had improved—they knew how to be afraid.
Just then, someone shouted from behind, "Beautiful lady, beautiful lady, look behind you! Quick, tell me how your Boyfriend did it? Why are the zombies afraid of him?"
Si Nan turned around. The voice came from the cinema. Through two doors, a fashionably and decently dressed young man was waving at her.
He didn't look like a survivor who lacked food or drink. His hair was combed meticulously, and there was a fashionably and gaudily dressed beautiful woman beside him.
