78: Awesome compass, awesome chariot!
Adding insult to injury, a layer of despair descended; that night, a Property Owner committed suicide by jumping off the building.
"What should we do? This time we can't even get water to drink."
"We can't survive, no one can survive, ahahaha~"
"Oh Heavens, are you really trying to force us to death? Wuwuwu~"
"Even if I die, I won't become the walking dead, ah---"
Inside the Residential Area, some people shouted, some cried, some went mad, and some jumped from buildings; such sights were becoming common.
The sleeping Gao Ming woke up to drink water after eating too many pickles, but the water in the kettle had already frozen into ice. He dizzily took his phone to fetch and boil water, but when the phone's light hit the water in the pot, he was suddenly jolted awake.
"What's going on? Why has the water turned black?" He quickly checked, and it was indeed black. He didn't leave, standing before the faucet to keep watching.
Half an hour passed, and the water coming out was still black. It was then he completely understood that the water was contaminated and undrinkable.
Helplessly, he had to switch pots, smash the ice from the kettle out, and re-boil it. Once his thirst was quenched, he checked the time; it was past one in the morning. Looking through the peephole at the zombies wandering the corridor, he saw only two left, both in a light sleep.
Holding a bucket, he quietly opened the door, wanting to go downstairs to collect some snow. The two zombies suddenly woke up and lunged at him.
"Damn it." He cursed angrily and quickly shut the door, his mind racing for a way to get down and get snow—without water he would die of thirst, and he had no food either.
Suddenly having a brainwave, he ran to the balcony and was overjoyed. "Great, there's scattered white snow here. Yes, yes, yes, I'll hang the bucket outside to catch the snow."
He was smart enough not to immediately open the sealed window; the three of them had sealed it together just a few days ago, and now he was the only one left.
Instead, he stood on the balcony observing the upper floors for a long time. After confirming there was no movement and it was safe, he quietly removed the nailed-on boards and opened the security window.
Then he placed the vegetable basin, bucket, and washbasin on the ledge protruding outside the balcony. Fearing they might be blown away by the strong wind, he turned back to get clear tape.
But just as he turned around, a zombie crawled down from the balcony above, hanging upside down and looking into the room. When Gao Ming walked back with the clear tape, the zombie let out a hiss and jumped down.
"Ah!" Gao Ming reacted quickly, taking a step back and bolting toward the bedroom.
But this zombie was fast; it caught up to Gao Ming and grabbed his cotton-padded jacket.
Terrified, Gao Ming grabbed a chair and smashed it over the zombie's head, gaining a sliver of a chance to escape. He slipped into the bedroom and slammed the door shut.
"Roar~" He was still a fraction of a second too slow; the zombie's hands gripped the door, and man and corpse engaged in a life-and-death struggle.
"You beast, let go!" Gao Ming was about to lose his grip; the zombie's strength was too great.
Seeing the zombie's grayish-white eyes staring at him and bloodthirsty drool leaking from its mouth—it didn't look very smart—a flash of inspiration hit him, and he suddenly let go with both hands.
"Roar~" As expected, the unprepared zombie fell to the ground. Gao Ming took the chance to slam the door, lock it, and move the bedroom vanity and bed to block the door.
"Damn, that was close, so close." After finishing this, Gao Ming slumped to the floor, paralyzed. He had almost become the zombie's meal.
He had escaped this disaster, but it was equivalent to sealing himself in the bedroom. All the food was in the living room; let alone water, the bedroom only had the half-bag of dry instant noodles he hadn't finished before sleeping last night.
"Am I going to die too?" He clutched his head and asked himself in despair. He suddenly missed Si Nan terribly, missed the meals she used to cook, and the clean rental house she kept. He missed the way he, Xu Songquan, and the others sat at the table eating together—he had tried adding Si Nan on wechat many times, every single day, using Xu Songquan's phone and Huang Jianli's phone, but Si Nan ignored him completely.
Calls wouldn't go through either; he guessed Si Nan must have blocked all incoming calls from unknown numbers.
Was this really the end of the world for him? No, it couldn't be. He had gone through immense hardships and narrow escapes just to find Si Nan and seize her house and supplies. He hadn't even seen her yet; how could he die?
He couldn't die. He wanted a good life, a life without worries about food or clothing. Right, Si Nan! Find Si Nan—Gao Ming acted like he was possessed, suddenly pacing in circles in the bedroom. After many laps, he stopped, opened all three phones, and began searching for allies in one group after another.
Anyone who wanted to take down Si Nan was his ally. Taking a gamble was better than waiting here to die.
So, he posted a message: "Does anyone want to deal with Si Nan? I lived with her for three years and know her very well."
The sleeping Si Nan had no idea that Gao Ming was looking for powerful enemies to deal with her. Even less did she know that nearby neighbors had seen her Armored Vehicle, photographed it, and posted it in various groups with the caption: Awesome Si Nan, Awesome Chariot!
The previously dead-silent groups suddenly erupted. "Is that a military Armored Vehicle? Impossible, how could she get her hands on such an awesome Armored Vehicle?"
"Don't disbelieve it, person above, isn't the evidence right before your eyes?"
"Whoa, this is too cool. Who exactly is Si Nan? She can even get one of these?"
"Oh my god, Goddess Si Nan, do you still need a little lackey to do laundry and cook? I'll worship you."
Suddenly, someone tagged the poster. "Do you know where she got this Armored Vehicle?"
The poster replied: "A fat bald guy drove it here. That fat guy traded this Armored Vehicle to Si Nan for a lot of supplies and went to Unit C, 106. I saw it with my own eyes."
Inside a large Villa: "Did everyone see? That woman Si Nan is getting more and more incredible, even getting an Armored Vehicle."
"Brother Yong, she got it, but she got it for us. Just say the word, when do we make our move?"
"Hahaha, Chen Ding, you really know me. That's right, that Armored Vehicle is ours. With it, let alone going out for supplies, we can even smash Si Nan's reinforced Villa turtle shell to pieces."
"But no rush. You guys go find some professional tools, remember they should be useful and aggressive, capable of breaking through that outer turtle shell of Si Nan's."
"Then, we can gather all the living beauties in this entire Residential Area. We'll hold beauties and eat fine food inside Si Nan's sturdy turtle shell."
"Brother Yong is generous; I won't limit how many wives you each get. Once I've kept enough for myself, you brothers can split the rest."
The remaining eight men's eyes lit up with excitement. "Hahaha, isn't this the life of an ancient emperor? Let's do it, brothers!"
