343: Blood red eyes
Just as Bi Yao was about to drift off to sleep, a low, eerie roar, like muffled thunder, rolled in from the thick, ink-like darkness surrounding the camp.
The sound seemed to have crawled out from the deepest abyss of the Nine Netherworld, carrying with it a chilling pressure that made one's hair stand on end and their Soul tremble, instantly shattering the night's original tranquility.
Su Han, who had been resting with his eyes closed, was instantly jolted from the ground like a spring by this sudden sound, his movements as agile as a leopard's.
His eyes were sharp like an eagle's as he vigilantly looked in the direction the sound came from, while instinctively shifting his body to shield Bi Yao completely behind him.
Bi Yao was also startled awake by this sudden sound that seemed to pierce the Soul.
Her sleepy, originally hazy eyes instantly widened, and fear, like a surging tide, rapidly spread in her eyes.
"Su Han, what is that sound?"
Her voice trembled slightly, echoing softly in the silent night filled with unknown dangers.
Su Han didn't respond immediately, but quickly bent down and grabbed the long sword they usually used for self-defense from beside him.
The sword gleamed with cold light, reflecting the faint and flickering flames of the bonfire, emitting a cold, intimidating radiance.
"I'm not sure yet."
"Whatever it is, I won't let it hurt you."
Su Han's tone was steady and firm, every word seemingly carrying immense weight, which slightly calmed Bi Yao's panicked heart.
As the roar grew closer, the sound seemed to carry a tangible force, causing the surrounding air to tremble slightly.
A massive figure slowly emerged from the thick darkness, as if breaking free from restraints deep within the night.
The Monster was enormous, roughly two to three times the size of an ordinary black bear, yet it had six legs as thick as tree trunks.
Each leg was densely covered with sharp barbs that gleamed with a chilling light in the dimness, like miniature blades.
Its head was flat and broad, like a heavy slab of stone, and its pair of blood-red eyes resembled burning hellfire, radiating an undisguised bloodthirsty light, as if it could devour all living creatures in front of it.
Its mouth was filled with uneven fangs, each one as thick as an adult's forearm, sharp and pointed.
At this moment, saliva dripped continuously from its fangs, making a "sizzling" sound as it hit the ground, like sulfuric acid dripping onto the surface, instantly corroding small pits, clearly indicating the saliva was highly corrosive.
Su Han gripped the sword tightly, his knuckles slightly white from the effort.
He slightly squatted down, his feet firmly planted on the ground, assuming a standard fighting stance, his entire body tense, like a cannonball about to be fired, ready to strike.
He knew in his heart that this sudden Monster was certainly not benevolent, and in this battle, he had to give it his all.
Bi Yao also suppressed the fear that surged like a tumultuous wave within her, took a deep breath, and bent down to pick up a burning branch.
The flame on the branch danced gently with the breeze, illuminating her slightly pale but resolute face; this was her only weapon at the moment.
She knew clearly that in this moment of crisis, she absolutely could not become a burden to Su Han.
The Monster let out a deafening roar, the sound like a sudden clap of thunder that made one's eardrums ache.
Accompanied by the roar, it suddenly exerted force, its six legs pushing hard against the ground, causing the ground to tremble slightly, and lunged towards Su Han and Bi Yao.
The powerful gust of wind it brought caused the bonfire flames to sway violently, even nearly extinguishing them at one point.
Su Han was quick-eyed and quick-handed, his figure flashing to the side like a ghost.
Almost in the same instant, he twisted his wrist and swung his sword towards the Monster's thick leg.
With a "clang," the sword blade struck the Monster's leg, but it felt like hitting hard metal, only emitting a dull sound and leaving only a shallow scratch on the Monster's leg.
The Monster was clearly enraged by this attack; it roared furiously, the sound seemingly able to tear the air. (End of this chapter)
