460: Chapter 460 The Collapse of the Flood Peak
The logo, which should have been centered, was stretched into a long strip. It was blurry, its outline indistinguishable, and the progress bar had run right to the very edge of the screen.
Half of it wasn't even visible, and it was impossible to tell what stage it was at.
"It's fine, it's fine. The boot animation is just a matter of image assets; we'll just adjust the dimensions later,"
Hong Feng hurriedly reassured everyone; after all, this was a minor issue.
They had encountered such problems before. After all, Android was essentially a mountain of crap, so minor glitches appearing occasionally were perfectly normal.
After finally managing to boot into the system, the moment the desktop loaded, the cheers in the office died down once again.
The desktop icons, which should have been neatly arranged in a 4×5 grid, were forcibly squeezed into a 4×6 layout under the new system. The bottom row of icons was half-buried into the bottom of the screen, making them impossible to click.
Additionally, the desktop wallpaper was forcibly stretched, making the characters' faces look unnaturally long.
Most absurdly, the virtual buttons at the bottom were stuck right against the very bottom of the screen, with a third of the back button extending beyond the display area.
And this was just upon entering the desktop—a whole pile of problems appeared immediately!
This made Hong Feng realize that this system might be even more pathetic than he had imagined!
After all, he had never encountered a situation like this before.
"Quick, go into settings and see if you can turn on the switch for Full-screen Display devices."
Hong Feng's voice was a bit flustered due to his anxiety.
The tester reached out to swipe the screen, wanting to pull down the notification bar settings, but as soon as their finger slid from the top, the system UI crashed immediately.
The desktop went black instantly, and it took two seconds to reload, only for the icons to be messed up again.
"What's going on? Where is the system UI? And why does Transsion next door have absolutely no issues?"
The tester didn't do anything else, just kept testing, but every time they swiped, the notification bar crashed.
Someone nearby thought of a bright idea and began to pray incessantly!
Perhaps with the blessing of metaphysics, they finally managed to click the settings icon and find the Full-screen Display adaptation settings, but the moment they opened the settings app, it crashed immediately.
At the same time, a line of text appeared on the screen: "Unfortunately, Settings has stopped working due to an unknown error."
"Damn it, what is this? Quickly, check the logs and see what the problem is."
Upon receiving Hong Feng's instructions, his subordinates began to execute them, but when the logs were pulled up, the screen was filled with red error messages!
Hong Feng's scalp tingled instantly.
The system UI crash was due to calling Google's new Full-screen Display API, but that API was essentially an empty implementation; calling it resulted in a null pointer immediately.
The settings crash was because the adaptation options didn't fully pass parameters to the associated window service, leading to an immediate error.
Even more fatal was the underlying issue in the display framework's size measurement logic; all application layouts were calculated incorrectly, so the display area was either truncated or stretched.
"This base package from Google... it's completely unusable!"
A developer sighed incessantly.
"This isn't a base package at all; it's clearly a half-finished product that they want us to help them perfect. No wonder they were so generous and let us modify it however we wanted!"
"Then how are we going to answer to Mr. Lei Jun?"
"It's over, it's over! We're going to be delayed again. By then, the attacks from Transsion will definitely come one after another; there's no need to even think about it."
Everyone had already guessed what Transsion was going to do next, but they were powerless to stop it, as their partner was just too incompetent.
No wonder Vivo and Oppo would rather not wait and just get on board!
Hong Feng didn't join the chorus of complaints; he picked up another test device to see if the built-in camera worked.
He clicked the icon, and it crashed in one second. He then opened the photo gallery, and all the images were stretched and distorted.
"Director, what should we do?"
The team members all looked at him.
Those who were still calculating their bonuses in the afternoon were now wondering if they should resign and go to Transsion.
After all, this system was truly rotten to the core. Forget about finishing the adaptation in two months; it would be good if it could be done by the middle of next year.
However, Hong Feng was also very anxious. After all, he had just promised Lei Jun that afternoon, and yet here he was, encountering... minor problems, only a short time later.
But he had to tell him; the test devices were right there, and the screen full of bugs couldn't be hidden. Moreover, if they didn't speak up and Lei Jun posted something on Weibo, that would be a major blow to them!
Thus, at exactly 12:00, Lei Jun, who had just finished his work, received this terrible news.
"Mr. Lei Jun, Google has deceived us?"
"They haven't finished development at all; the so-called Full-screen Display is just a framework!"
"The system is full of bugs right now; there are barely any usable features..."
Moreover, just as Hong Feng was reporting, a team member nearby reached out, and the system crashed on its own.
"It wasn't me! I didn't even touch it!"
"Mr. Lei Jun, the system crashed!" Hong Feng repeated it to him again. Lei Jun, on the other end of the line, was now fully awake, his sleepiness gone. He completely understood how serious this problem was.
Looking at his concerned wife beside him, Lei Jun could only frown and say:
"Got it. We'll discuss it at the meeting tomorrow!"
...
Early the next morning, just as Xiaomi began their meeting, Digital Chat Station posted an update:
"Recently, Full-screen Display has become a buzzword, and every company has announced their own Full-screen Display plans.
Especially after Google's 'native support.'
More and more people think that Full-screen Display isn't that difficult, and that it's just a case of some manufacturer taking a shortcut to gain an early advantage.
However, in reality, it's not that simple!
Full-screen Display has never been just about changing the resolution ratio. A complete Full-screen Display adaptation solution requires handling at least 6 modules...
As for which 6, I'll spare some face for the friendly companies here; go check the Transsion official website yourself.
The system Google is currently testing, to put it bluntly, has only done half the job—stretching the default system ratio.
The remaining 5 major modules are either not done or are just empty shells.
Rushing out a crippled version in two and a half months has no practical significance other than snatching the title of 'first launch.'
Instead, it will make more people realize how difficult it was for Transsion to create their Full-screen Display, and how many hard nuts they had to crack in the process?
All I can say is that Google really messed up!"
"At the same time, I suggest that if certain manufacturers are particularly fond of the Full-screen Display gimmick, they could release a few Full-screen Display phones to test it out, just like Vivo and Oppo. [Dog Head]"
"I used to think Google was the father of Android, the great father of all manufacturers. Now it seems this father is just so-so?"
"I suggest Google go and poach some engineers globally; stop building cars behind closed doors in Silicon Valley."
"Xiaomi just said they were releasing a Full-screen Display this year; they're probably up all night fixing bugs, right?"
"Xiaomi is always hitting themselves with their own boomerangs!"
"I guess Lei Jun announced the news as soon as he got it; he didn't even look at the installation package himself."
"That can't be right. Lei Jun is, after all, the Vice President of Kingsoft. He works in software, how is that possible? Not even looking at it? That's a bit absurd..."
"We're just teasing; there's no need to hate on them so hard!"
