146: Classic Ambush
With the Wolf Pack spread out to scout for intelligence, Renn quickly found a suitable ambush location to wait for his prey.
This time, he brought the elites of the Guard Army: two thousand warriors and over a thousand powerful magic wolves.
The Gold Rank combatants included himself, Alistair, Melissa, and Anatolis; the main forces were Melissa and Anatolis, while he and Alistair were responsible for support and clearing out the fodder.
Kapdo was left behind by Renn to guard Red River City. After all, he had brought out almost the entire Guard Army and all the high-level combatants; someone powerful had to stay in Red River City just in case.
The ambush point was within the Blackstone Territory, not far from the entrance of the Red River Valley; this was the path the Dragon Legion had to take to retreat, according to Anatolis's scouting.
Renn led his men to lie in wait here. As a mage, Melissa cast a concealment spell on everyone, hiding their tracks.
Two days passed quickly!
Dragon Hawk anxiously urged the Slaves below to move faster.
After receiving the order to retreat a few days ago, he organized the legion to quickly withdraw to the north.
Looking at the somewhat chaotic ranks, Dragon Hawk considered whether he should abandon the spoils and the fodder below to lead only the Bronze Rank and higher elites in a direct retreat.
"Although the Cult Leader said we could retreat without worrying about these guys, I believe the Cult Leader will be very pleased if I can bring back these captured people and resources, and the rewards won't be small."
In the end, Dragon Hawk decided to continue retreating with the entire group.
Primarily, the Black Mountain Range was already in sight, and there were no pursuers behind him for the time being, so Dragon Hawk wasn't too hurried. Although Roderick had said the situation was critical, Dragon Hawk didn't feel it much himself.
His journey south had been very smooth, capturing five or six human territories and reaping a bountiful harvest; Dragon Hawk only fought one tough battle before Roderick ordered the retreat.
In that battle, his offensive was blocked by the human army, and his troops suffered significant losses; now, the combat power in his hands was only about half of what it was when he set out.
However, Dragon Hawk didn't care much about these losses; as long as those low-level Slaves returned and a few years passed, a new batch would be born, so there was no need to worry about numbers.
Dragon Hawk was now thinking about how to ask for rewards upon his return to improve his own strength and the strength of his Dragon Hawk Guards.
The Dragon Hawk Guards were a group of personal guards specially trained by Dragon Hawk himself. They usually went out to battle with him and stayed by his side; they were the core combat force he controlled, each possessing Silver Rank strength.
Among the army he commanded this time, only the Dragon Hawk Guards were worth his concern; the others were just pawns that could be sacrificed or abandoned at any time.
Just as Dragon Hawk was thinking about training a few more Dragon Hawk Guards upon his return, a sudden attack interrupted him.
Having lain in wait for two days, Anatolis and Melissa, who had been waiting for their prey to arrive, launched a fierce attack on Dragon Hawk.
Melissa, in particular, was extremely diligent in her attacks against Dragon Hawk.
It was this hawk-headed monster before her that had caused Alistair's efforts to fall through at the last moment, failing to change her fate, and had even severely injured her back then.
Melissa absolutely loathed Dragon Hawk and gave her all from the very beginning without holding back.
As a battle-hardened veteran, Anatolis was even less likely to hold back.
The two Gold-rank Peak powerhouses struck instantly, catching Dragon Hawk off guard.
However, Dragon Hawk had been flying in mid-air, giving him a split second to react to this lethal sneak attack.
That single moment saved his life, but he still ended up with significant injuries.
"It's you! Why are you here?"
Dragon Hawk looked in terror at Anatolis and Melissa, who had ambushed him; facing these two powerful enemies, he felt a threat to his life.
Without any hesitation, Dragon Hawk turned and fled, while simultaneously ordering the Dragon Hawk Guards to stall the powerful enemies behind him.
"Stop them for me!"
At Dragon Hawk's command, over a hundred Hawk-headed Dragon-blooded Warriors quickly flew over to block Melissa and Anatolis.
However, these Hawk-headed Dragon-blooded Warriors were too slow and couldn't keep up with the speed of the two Gold-rank Peak powerhouses at all. Melissa and Anatolis rapidly closed in on Dragon Hawk, and their fierce attacks struck again.
The battle between the three Gold-rank Peak powerhouses erupted intensely in mid-air, with over a hundred Hawk-headed Dragon-blooded Monsters circling the battlefield, making the fight look somewhat chaotic.
On the other side, Renn led his elite warriors and the Wolf Pack in a charge against the Dragon Legion.
Renn had only two thousand warriors and fewer than two thousand magic wolves under his command, totaling at most over four thousand combatants, yet he was facing an army of tens of thousands of monsters.
However, Renn was confident at this moment; he had already observed that the monster army's strength had been greatly weakened and was not very formidable.
After the high-end combat force of over a hundred Silver Rank flying Dragon Hawk Guards was diverted, the remaining Silver Rank magical beasts were few, and there weren't many high-level Dragon-blooded Monsters either; most of the rest were only Black Iron Rank.
With such strength, they were completely unable to withstand the fierce charge led by Renn.
Alistair released several powerful spells from the rear.
Exploding fireballs burst within the monster swarm, killing hundreds of enemies at once, followed by a chain of lightning that charred over a hundred Dragon-blooded Monsters.
The Magic Wolf Knights and magic wolves led by Renn instantly broke the Dragon Legion's formation and began a massive slaughter of these alien monsters.
The Guard Army Infantry Regiment, led by several Silver Rank captains, formed ranks to face the enemy, continuously striking at the swarms of foes.
Renn, meanwhile, led the cavalry and magic wolves in continuous charges; wherever the resistance was strongest or a Silver Rank aura appeared, Renn would charge there.
Alistair observed from the rear, releasing a powerful spell with every wave of her staff.
In just a few breaths' time, the Dragon Legion was completely scattered by Renn.
Violent Battle Qi raged across the battlefield as a large number of monsters and magical beasts were slain by Renn.
After the Dragon Legion's resistance was crushed, Renn began to act alone, and his killing efficiency increased significantly once again.
Golden Battle Qi bloomed with magnificent light on the battlefield, and beneath this light, the color of blood continued to spread.
The humans captured by the Dragon Legion had already resigned themselves to their fate, numbly being driven to run by the Dragon-blooded Monsters, with many dying along the way.
They had thought their end would be either dying from exhaustion on the road or eventually being eaten by the monsters, never expecting a turn of events now.
Seeing Renn display such divine might, many looked at everything before them in disbelief.
The monsters that had seemed invincible were now being slaughtered by Renn like vegetables; many were stunned, staring blankly as Renn wreaked havoc in all directions.
Soon, the main force of the Dragon Legion was completely routed. Without Dragon Hawk's command and with the other commanders slain by Renn, the surviving Dragon-blooded Monsters and magical beasts began to flee.
Many magical beasts turned and dove into the thick grass, disappearing into the wilderness.
Renn didn't pursue these fleeing magical beasts and Dragon-blooded Monsters; his current forces were limited, and he didn't have the capacity to hunt them down.
The battle entered its final stages. After routing the Dragon Legion, the Guard Army began to take charge of the captured personnel and supplies.
The magic Wolf Pack continued to clear out the remaining magical beasts and Dragon-blooded Monsters.
Wiping the blood from his war blade, Renn looked up at the northern sky. Dragon Hawk had fled to the north, with Anatolis and Melissa in pursuit.
Quite some time had passed, and Renn could no longer see the two sides of the engagement; he could only sense the fluctuations of battle coming from the north.
