190: Sweeping across the battlefield like a whirlwind

In Blackstone Fortress, Clarkson sat in the main seat with a face full of despair.

He had just confirmed that the Chaos Demon Legion was less than thirty miles from Blackstone Fortress, and more than one Gold-rank Great Demon had appeared in the attacking demon army.

Leaving aside the Gold-rank Great Demons, the demon army of two or three thousand alone was enough to level Blackstone Fortress a dozen times over.

A trusted subordinate suggested to Clarkson, "My Lord, should we go for reinforcements?"

Calling it seeking reinforcements was actually just a nice way of saying they should flee.

"Reinforcements? Where would we go for reinforcements?"

"The Demon Legion has already closed in; they've blocked the road south. We can no longer contact Rage Bear Fortress."

"Moreover, those flying demons are definitely lying in wait nearby. The moment we dare to step out, we will be hunted down immediately."

Clarkson knew a bit about Chaos Demons; based on the knowledge passed down through his family, he knew the attack patterns of these low-level demons.

It was precisely because he understood the Chaos Demons that he felt such despair.

"How could so many demons suddenly appear?"

"That small spatial rift couldn't possibly have spewed out so many demons so quickly. It makes no sense!"

Clarkson couldn't understand how the situation had changed so rapidly.

A few days ago, after discovering a small spatial rift to the south, he had already sent a messenger to Rage Bear Fortress to request reinforcements, waiting for them to arrive and seal the rift.

According to his estimates, it would take the demons at least seven or eight days to accumulate enough power to threaten Blackstone Fortress, which was enough time for him to wait for reinforcements.

He never expected that in less than three days, the demons' power would reach a level that could crush Blackstone Fortress, while the messenger he sent out never returned with any news.

"My Lord, then what shall we do?"

The nobles of the Blackstone Territory were already in a panic; seeing Clarkson's despair, they didn't know how to respond.

A dazed Clarkson looked up, unsure of what to do, when he suddenly saw the portraits of the Blackstone Family ancestors hanging on the wall—the symbols of the family's heritage through generations.

"For the family, I must hold on!"

Clarkson suddenly stood up; he no longer chose to hide and prepared for a desperate final stand.

"Get all the warriors onto the walls! Hold our ground! As long as we persist, the Grand Duke's reinforcements will arrive. We still have a chance."

Clarkson's command gave the panicked nobles something to lean on, and everyone began to take action.

On the walls of Blackstone Fortress, several thousand soldiers in various gear were lined up in a messy formation, waiting for orders from their officers.

Among these thousands were soldiers of the Blackstone Family, as well as private troops from the two Baronies and over a dozen knight families belonging to the Blackstone Territory.

To escape the demons, these two Baronies and the knight families had all fled to Blackstone Fortress, which had significantly increased the number of soldiers there.

Regardless of the warriors' actual strength, seeing thousands of people standing together provided some peace of mind. The morale of the warriors on the walls was not low, and the previously panicked nobles felt a bit more at ease.

Only Clarkson, standing at the very center, felt a flicker of hope ignite in his heart.

"Perhaps I can hold out until the reinforcements arrive!"

Soon, the Demon Legion appeared in Clarkson's line of sight.

"Prepare for battle!"

Just as his command was passed down, the demons' first wave of attacks suddenly arrived.

In the previously empty sky, hundreds of winged Chaos Demons suddenly appeared. A massive amount of fireballs spewed from the mouths of the Eagle Demons and landed on the walls of Blackstone Fortress.

As the fireballs exploded upon landing, the surrounding Blackstone Fortress defenders were instantly turned into human torches, dying painfully amidst tragic wails.

The surprise attack by the flying demons dealt a massive blow to the defenders of Blackstone Fortress, but their nightmare was only just beginning.

Three Gold-rank Great Demons took the lead and reached the base of the wall in the blink of an eye.

With a thunderous boom, the not-so-tall walls of Blackstone Fortress were smashed open by the Great Demons. Subsequently, a large number of demons flooded into the city and began a slaughter.

Clarkson and the others commanding from the wall were completely paralyzed with fear.

The excited roars of demons and the wails of humans facing death filled the battlefield.

A few kilometers away, Renn arrived with his army.

Seeing Blackstone Fortress being ravaged by demons, Renn immediately ordered the entire army to strike.

The sharp arrows of the Storm Archers pierced the sky, shooting down the flying demons one by one, while the Frost Wolf Riders and Gale Wolf Riders charged ahead from the left and right.

The cavalry units of the First Legion spread out on the periphery, roaming and waiting for an opportunity. Four thousand elite infantrymen formed a neat array behind the wolf rider units, advancing like a wall as they pressed toward Blackstone Fortress.

The demon army that had just broken into Blackstone Fortress was a bit dazed by the sudden attack. The three Great Demon commanders looked toward the human army charging from outside the city in confusion.

Renn would not give these demons time to react. The fierce offensive swept across the battlefield like a gale.

The walls of Blackstone Fortress were already crumbling under the demons' assault. After the Wolf Knights smashed the demon army near the walls into pieces, they easily leaped over the walls to slaughter the demons inside the city.

The remnants of the demon army scattered by the Wolf Knights had not yet recovered before they were hit by the infantry phalanx of the First Legion, with a large number of demons killed on the spot.

By this time, Renn had found the commander of this demon army, a Great Demon with Middle Gold rank strength.

Reck moved through the air as sharp wind blades lunged at the demon commander like a rainstorm, followed closely by Renn's explosive slashes.

Surging Gold Battle Qi and restless wind elementals occupied half the sky. The phantom of a giant Gray Wolf appeared out of thin air and pounced fiercely toward the demon commander.

A loud wolf howl was mixed with the terrified screams of the demon before its death.

The demon commander was sent flying heavily into the ground. Smoke rose up, only to be instantly cleared by a violent gust of wind.

A large crater appeared out of nowhere, and Renn stepped slowly out of it, carrying a dripping head in his hand.

In just one exchange, the strongest demon commander had been slain by Renn.

Looking around, Renn found his next two targets. With a surge of wind elementals, Reck carried Renn toward the locations of the other two Gold-rank Great Demons.

It was Montoya's first time seeing Renn go all out, and also his first time seeing such a violent side of Renn.

The demon commander he had just been fighting to a standstill was heavily wounded on the ground in an instant by the arriving Renn. He then saw Renn walk leisurely over to the wounded demon and lop off its head.

The entire process took no more than a single breath.

"We're both Gold Rank, but is the gap really this large?"

Looking at the god-like Renn, Montoya swallowed hard.

He now felt the immense gap between himself and Renn. The Frost Wolf Riders fighting behind him felt the same; their eyes were full of admiration as they watched Renn slaughter in all directions. Their reverence for the strong made it impossible for them to reject such a powerful leader.

"Kill!"

"Kill every last one of these demon scumbags!"

Standing atop the highest tower of Blackstone Fortress, Renn held up the head of the last demon commander and issued the extermination order to his warriors.

Over two thousand Chaos Demons were quickly slain, and the few that managed to run out were picked off by the cavalry units roaming the perimeter.

The battle lasted until evening.

The battle finally ended after a Storm Archer shot down the very last demon.
