20: A sudden ambush
Alger and Eric, who were resting in the shadows, were startled awake by a sudden clamor.
The two of them quickly rose and looked alertly in the direction of the noise.
“It's the Fel Orcs. What are they doing?”
Eric discovered that the source of the sound was exactly in the direction of the Fel Orcs's group. The familiar roars made them certain that the Fel Orcs were making a major move.
“I don't know what's going on.”
“The Fel Orcs sound very excited.”
Alger was also unsure why the Fel Orcs had suddenly become so noisy, but he had a bad premonition.
At that moment, Eric suddenly noticed that the direction the Fel Orcs were moving was exactly toward them.
“Big Brother Alger, those Fel Orcs seem to be coming for us.”
“Quick!”
“Let's go!”
Alger reacted faster; in an instant, he realized that he and Eric had been exposed. The Fel Orcs knew their location, and the target of their agitation was the two of them.
The two of them quickly mounted their horses and fled.
“This is the perfect chance to lead these Fel Orcs to the ambush site the Lord prepared.”
Although he didn't know why they had been exposed, it didn't stop Alger from completing the mission Wren had given him.
With Eric leading the way, the two moved toward the location where Wren was hiding.
Not long after they left, the Fel Orcs's group arrived.
A Stalker crouched down and sniffed the grass where Alger had been lying not long ago.
“The residual scent is still very strong; those humans didn't leave long ago.”
The Evil Beastman Stalker had already cursed the Evil Orc Commander behind him eight hundred times in his heart. If it hadn't been for him leading the group with all that shouting and screaming along the way, they wouldn't have scared off the humans hiding here.
“They ran?”
The Evil Orc Commander became even more excited when he saw that the targets had fled.
“Then find them. Those two cowardly humans must have gone to find their Human Lord. This is the perfect chance to catch them all.”
“Hahahaha!”
“Cowardly and stupid humans!”
The Evil Beastman Stalker tracked the traces left by Alger when he departed and quickly found the direction.
“Let's go. I want to tear that Human Lord apart with my own hands and crunch his bones.”
The swarm of Fel Orcs charged in the direction Alger had left.
Meanwhile, having put some distance between themselves and the Fel Orcs, Alger and Eric stopped to carefully observe the movements of the Fel Orcs not far behind them.
After confirming that the Fel Orcs were continuing to chase them, the two continued forward. However, their speed was never too fast, maintaining a distance that was neither too far nor too close, ensuring the Fel Orcs could always track their movements.
Eric smiled and said to Alger, “These brainless fellows have quite the noses. It looks like the mission the Lord assigned can be successfully completed.”
“Don't be careless. The Fel Orcs this time are strong and numerous; they won't be easy to deal with.”
Alger remained relatively cautious.
“Don't worry, with the Lord here, nothing will go wrong. Besides, there are no Rot-Wolves or Gogu Beasts among these Fel Orcs. They're all infantry and aren't as fast as us. Even if we can't beat them, we have nothing to fear.”
Eric was full of confidence.
“I hope everything goes smoothly!”
Alger said, glancing back once more.
The clip-clop of horse hooves drifted across the wilderness, breaking the silence of the dark night.
Waking from his slumber, Wren looked somewhat surprised in the direction the sound was coming from.
“What's happening?”
It was already the middle of the night. Wren had thought they wouldn't see the Fel Orcs tonight, but he unexpectedly heard the familiar sound of hooves.
A few breaths later, a travel-worn Eric arrived before Wren.
“Lord!”
“The Fel Orcs discovered Big Brother Alger and me and are chasing us. Big Brother Alger is leading them here; he sent me ahead to notify you.”
“You were discovered?” Wren hadn't expected such an unplanned situation in the middle of the night.
“How were you discovered?”
“Lord, I'm not sure either. For some reason, the Fel Orcs found our trail and suddenly charged out of their camp toward where Big Brother Alger and I were hiding.”
“If they hadn't made so much noise, we might have been surrounded by the Fel Orcs and unable to escape.”
“I see.”
Wren felt that something was not quite right, but things had already reached this point, and he had no other choice.
“Prepare for battle!”
Everyone in the squad quickly prepared for combat.
Looking at the vast night, Wren felt a bit worried.
Under the cover of night, the pitch-black combat environment severely restricted the squad's long-range attack power, while providing a significant advantage to the Fel Orcs.
Alger's sudden exposure also made Wren worry whether their own side had been detected by the Fel Orcs as well.
“These followers of the Evil God always have some special methods. I hope it's not what I think.”
Not long after Eric arrived, Wren heard the sound of hooves again. Clearly, Alger was also approaching.
“Big Brother Alger is here, I'll go meet him.” Eric said a word and then galloped forward.
“Prepare for battle!”
“Check your bows and arrows once more. Mount up!”
Everyone in the squad mounted their horses. In the darkness, the squad spread out to both flanks with Wren at the center, waiting quietly in battle formation.
After Eric brought Alger back, the two of them also joined the ranks and prepared for battle.
The surrounding wilderness fell into silence once more, but this peace was soon to be broken.
The noisy group of Fel Orcs was charging frantically across the wilderness.
“You useless thing hiding in the shadows, are you sure those two humans are up ahead?”
Having chased for half the night, the Evil Orc Commander could no longer suppress the rage in his heart. Galloping through the night with nothing to show for it made him not only exhausted but also extremely furious.
“Yes, Lord Commander, those two humans are right ahead, but they have mounts and are moving quite fast.”
“Mounts. If the Rot-Wolves were here, I would have caught and torn them apart long ago. These pieces of trash can really run.”
The Evil Orc Commander no longer cared about catching them all in one net; he just wanted to slaughter and devour flesh to soothe the anger in his heart.
“To hell with it!”
He casually swung his axe at a nearby War Slave, and in an instant, the unlucky Evil Beastman War Slave was split in two and fell to the ground.
The smell of blood filled the air, making the Evil Orc Commander somewhat intoxicated. He took a deep breath of the thick bloody mist, preparing to devour the War Slave's corpse.
“If you're hungry, you can go eat a few too!”
In the eyes of the Evil Orc Commander, War Slaves were both auxiliary troops and emergency rations; they could be eaten when there was nothing else.
The remaining Bronze Rank and Black Iron Rank Evil Beastman Warriors were already famished. They impatiently began killing nearby War Slaves for food. The Evil Beastman War Slaves scurried around in panic, and the entire group fell into a state of chaotic disarray.
Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!
Several faint sounds of whistling air rang out, and several Evil Beastman Warriors who were in the middle of killing War Slaves fell to the ground without warning.
The Evil Beastman War Slaves nearby looked at the fallen Evil Beastman Warriors in confusion.
“Wah! Wah! Wah!”
The low-intelligence Evil Beastman War Slaves couldn't speak, but they let out shrill screams upon seeing their fallen masters.
“Enemies?”
The Evil Orc Commander looked in shock at his fallen kin not far away.
Just then, the sound of whistling air rang out once more!
