101: Chapter 101 Hu Dalei's Decision
...
"Teacher, do you still remember me?"
Putting down the fruit basket, Lin Fang plopped down on the nearby caregiver's stool.
The ward was filled with the smell of disinfectant. Hu Dalei lay on the hospital bed; his once booming voice was now reduced to faint breathing. His face was sallow, his eye sockets sunken—at a glance, it was clear he didn't have long to live.
"I have Liver Cancer, not Alzheimer's!" Seeing Lin Fang enter, Hu Dalei, who was initially happy, was taken aback by his words. He then rolled his eyes and said, "On the contrary, how does a big boss who took a leave of absence have time to visit today?"
"It seems you've been keeping quite an eye on me, Brother Hu."
Lin Fang chuckled, his expression exaggerated, looking somewhat flattered.
He was the legal representative of the company, and he hadn't made a special effort to hide it. Anyone who cared to look could find out. No doubt his information had been pored over by many.
"Cough, cough... getting a little successful and you start showing off. Careful not to get set up," Hu Dalei coughed twice and spoke weakly. "Alright, now that you've seen me, leave. I have money; I don't need your help, kid."
"I wasn't planning on donating money to you, Brother Hu," Lin Fang said, surprised.
Hu Dalei's old face turned visibly red.
Just as the middle-aged man was wondering if something had gone wrong with the political ideology he taught, shouting and pleas for mercy came from the doorway. Hu Dalei used this to quickly move past the topic.
"What's going on outside?"
"Just three scammers," Lin Fang sneered, briefly explaining the situation to Hu Dalei.
"You did this?" Hu Dalei watched as Lin Fang decided the fate of those people in just a few words, and he couldn't help but be secretly amazed.
To be able to get a hold of such things, the power behind him was far more than just that of a simple businessman.
Lin Fang nodded. "Brother Hu, you don't need to praise me."
"Get out of here."
Hu Dalei laughed and cursed, then sighed. "If your teacher's wife hadn't insisted on trying, I wouldn't have agreed to something that sounds so unreliable. Don't I know my own body?"
"Take my advice: smoke and drink less in your daily life."
"Brother Hu, didn't you do exactly that? How did you still end up with this disease?"
"Hey, did you come here today just to piss me off?" Hu Dalei sat up in bed, angered, and said loudly, "No matter what, I have to give you another lesson today."
"Teacher, don't be in such a hurry."
Lin Fang's expression turned serious as he got down to business. "I have a Research Institute in Switzerland. An unreleased new drug there can cure your Liver Cancer. They're already prepared over there. I hope you can head over for treatment as soon as possible, because..."
Lin Fang looked at the middle-aged man on the hospital bed and didn't finish his sentence. He just looked him up and down, shook his head, and showed a look of regret.
This sudden information clearly stunned Hu Dalei. It took a while for him to react and confirm again, "You're saying you opened a Research Institute in Switzerland and can cure my Liver Cancer? This is a terminal, incurable illness."
"I'm not boasting," Lin Fang responded calmly.
"For real?"
"For real."
"I won't be a lab rat?"
Lin Fang was helpless. "Teacher, am I that kind of person in your eyes?"
"Not really," Hu Dalei twitched his lips. Although Lin Fang's moral character might have slipped a bit, he wouldn't go so far as to trick him. Besides, in his current state, nobody would even want his organs if he tried to sell them.
"Then what are we waiting for? I'm being discharged right now. I've had enough!"
Hu Dalei threw off the covers and walked toward the door.
—
"Scammers really deserve to die. Fortunately, the heavens have eyes."
At the door, Zhang Rongtao and a few classmates were comforting Chen Yun. The former spat at the receding figures of the three people being escorted away.
"Teacher's Wife, Teacher Hu is a good man with heaven's protection, he'll definitely be fine... Oh my god, terminal lucidity..."
The ward door was suddenly pushed open. Hu Dalei, wearing hospital pajamas, rushed out full of energy and slapped the male student who had just spoken. "Watch your mouth!"
Chen Yun hurried forward and said worriedly, "Why did you get out of bed? The doctor said you can't move around..."
"It's fine, I'm not staying here anymore."
Hu Dalei laughed heartily, took her hand, and said, "Yun, I'm saved. This kid Lin Fang said his Research Institute in Switzerland can treat my illness. Pack up, we're leaving."
Hearing this.
Zhang Rongtao and the others looked at each other, unable to believe their ears for a moment. Chen Yun was stunned, then turned to look at Lin Fang as he walked out of the ward, hope rising in her eyes. "Student Lin, is this true?"
She didn't want to let go of any shred of hope; she would be willing even if she were being deceived.
Lin Fang smiled and nodded. "I've arranged everything. It's a private jet; we can leave in two hours. I need to go back to the Research Institute as well, so I'll go with the teacher."
People naturally admire the strong. When someone surpasses them by too much, they can't even muster feelings of jealousy. Lin Fang's classmates were like this. In the eyes of two of the female students, the Lin Fang speaking before them was practically glowing.
And he radiated the scent of money.
But just as they were about to leave, President Li Tianhua arrived hurriedly with several doctors, his anger still visible. He showed a look of shame upon seeing the Hu couple.
"Mr. Hu, Ms. Chen, I apologize to you on behalf of this hospital. It was our management's negligence that allowed such scum to appear."
"To express our apologies, all of Mr. Hu's medical expenses this time will be covered by our hospital. I also promise you that we will arrange for two top oncology experts to consult for Mr. Hu, striving our hardest to extend Mr. Hu's life."
"Ah, ..."
Hu Dalei and Chen Yun looked at each other.
"President Li, thank you for your kindness, but I've already decided to transfer to Switzerland for treatment." Hu Dalei ignored the strange sensation in his palm and spoke to them.
He didn't mention Lin Fang or the promise of a cure.
President Li was stunned. He hadn't expected Hu Dalei to refuse the hospital's goodwill. He walked up to Hu Dalei, his tone becoming slightly more serious.
"Mr. Hu, you don't need to worry. The previous situation won't happen again. One of the experts I've arranged for you is Professor Pang Wenzhi, who is internationally renowned. The targeted immune combination therapy for Liver Cancer he proposed is world-leading, especially the recently introduced CAR-M cells combined with multi-kinase inhibitors..."
This introduction, filled with technical jargon, made everyone's heads spin. Li Tianhua saw that they weren't surprised or awed but instead looked completely bewildered, so he stopped talking sheepishly. He had almost forgotten they were a bunch of Information Technology students.
It was also because he knew Hu Dalei was a teacher at a well-known university in the city that Li Tianhua was so attentive. He needed to minimize the impact of this scandal.
But undeniably, Li Tianhua wasn't bluffing them; this was indeed the most advanced treatment plan in the world for Liver Cancer.
An urgent look appeared on Chen Yun's face, and her grip on Hu Dalei's hand tightened. Compared to going to Switzerland, she felt this was the way to let her husband live longer.
As for a complete recovery, in the eyes of Chen Yun, who had been searching for hope for so long without finding any, it was just the student's rhetoric. This disease was impossible to cure.
Hu Dalei looked at Lin Fang, hesitation appearing on his face. Seeing that the latter's expression was as usual, Hu Dalei's thick lips moved as he spoke his thoughts.
"President Li, I still insist on being discharged."
This time, it was Lin Fang's turn to look surprised. He hadn't expected Hu Dalei to risk his life based on just a few words from him.
If Hu Dalei were willing to stay here, Lin Fang wouldn't have objected. His plans were never changed by insignificant matters.
It would be a small matter to send someone to give him an injection in the middle of the night.
