150: Chapter 150 Talent Hunting Plan
...
After the meeting ended, Yan Wei-geng hurriedly finished dinner and returned to his dormitory.
The dormitory furnishings were extremely simple, discarding all unnecessary decorations. Aside from a work computer on the desk, there were stacks of neatly arranged handwritten manuscripts, densely covered with formulas and sketches.
After turning on the computer, Yan Wei-geng got busy.
By the time he finished typing, it was already late at night. Yan Wei-geng smiled with satisfaction as he entered the last character; the work he had poured his heart and soul into for over half a month was finally complete. These words condensed his life's learning and visions; he had to leave something behind for future generations.
Yan Wei-geng picked up a piece of blank manuscript paper from the side and began to write his suicide note:
"Today, I use my death to express my resolve, not out of despair, but as a warning. If my blood can extinguish even a fraction of selfish desire and awaken a glimmer of consensus, then I shall die a worthy death.
Humanity's time is running out. Unite, or perish."
After a moment of contemplation, Yan Wei-geng added another sentence below.
"I implore you, do not give up on the lives of others."
After finishing everything, Yan Wei-geng twisted his bedsheet into a rope and hung it from the edge of the bed. Logically, this height was insufficient for hanging, but for someone determined to die, such a difficulty was trivial.
Before true despair arrived, he chose to leave first.
He hoped his death would bring about some change; after all, he was a scientist of some renown, Yan Wei-geng thought.
Just as Yan Wei-geng closed his eyes and prepared to act, his computer, which had been off, suddenly emitted a piercing notification sound.
The sound grew increasingly sharp, forcing Yan Wei-geng to look over, only to see this sentence appear on the computer screen:
"Do you want to understand the meaning of life? Do you want to truly... live?"
Who's playing tricks?
Yan Wei-geng frowned deeply and stood up to walk toward the computer. If it were a hacker intrusion, the situation would be serious; nothing here could be allowed to leak to the outside world.
If people were to find out that an asteroid was going to destroy Earth in the future, they would fall into chaos long before a solution could be found.
Society needs stable order.
Yan Wei-geng moved the mouse and clicked the screen. The previous sentence disappeared, revealing the desktop, but the desktop was empty—including the legacy he had spent so much time leaving behind.
Information leak!
Yan Wei-geng subconsciously pressed the alarm button under the desk, only to find that the alarm, which should have been buzzing, was now completely silent.
At that moment, an electronic voice rang out from the computer:
"Respected Mr. Yan, I apologize for taking the liberty of browsing through your computer without your consent. I am surprised that you made such a decision; it is quite admirable, yet at the same time, I find it quite foolish."
"You clearly know that your death won't change anything."
Yan Wei-geng's expression changed. "Who are you?"
The base's network security was of the highest level; how could it be so easily breached, with even the alarm being suppressed?
"A true Savior Organization," the electronic voice replied steadily, without a hint of emotion. "Long before you, we had already discovered the existence of this asteroid and have been working to resist it."
"Mr. Yan's achievements in the fields of Nuclear Physics and Materials Science are obvious to all. It would be a pity for you to die like this. Now, I invite you to join us. Before you agree or refuse, you can take a look at these two documents first."
As the voice finished, a folder appeared on the desktop.
With suspicion and uncertainty, Yan Wei-geng opened it. Inside were only two items: a new type of material and a theoretical derivation of Nuclear Fusion.
Each set of materials was only a few pages long, but as soon as Yan Wei-geng opened them and took a look, his expression turned solemn. By the time he reached the end, he seemed to have a sudden epiphany, murmuring to himself, "So that's how it is..."
"Mr. Yan, what do you think? We have mature Nuclear Fusion technology; these two are merely the most inconspicuous theoretical knowledge in our organization."
The electronic voice continued, "By joining, you will gain access to another knowledge system. The world's first Practical Nuclear Fusion Reactor might very well be born from your hands."
"Furthermore, what we must face is not just the asteroid..."
That last sentence brought Yan Wei-geng back to his senses, his heart racing. "What else is there?"
"That is something Mr. Yan will only know after joining us. The only thing I can say is that they are beyond your imagination."
"Aren't you afraid I'll leak the current situation?"
"We wouldn't care."
Yan Wei-geng fell into silence. It wasn't until ten minutes later that he shook his head and said, "To be honest, your organization's mystery and technical prowess shock me. I even believe you truly can save the world. But the state will not agree to me joining a private organization, even if I were willing."
The tone of the electronic voice remained unchanged:
"Please do not worry, Mr. Yan. The organization's operation has already begun."
"What operation?" Yan Wei-geng asked, startled.
"Our target is not just you."
