213: Chapter 213 Facing It Together!
Chapter 213: Facing It Together!
The ground was trembling.
Bai Wanwan looked nervous, pressing herself tightly against Yan Lie; she could feel the vibrations from behind her growing stronger and stronger.
"Yan Lie, do you hear that?"
Yan Lie held her tightly, never wishing more than at this moment that Wan Wan wasn't by his side.
His usual smile had turned solemn. "I hear it. It's likely a beast tide nearby."
The tremors were so great that Bai Wanwan, never having seen such a scene, felt her skin crawl.
Her fingers unconsciously dug into Yan Lie's arm, leaving behind crescent-shaped red marks.
"Don't be afraid!" Yan Lie patted her back, his voice tight.
How could he protect Wan Wan?
His eyes scanned the surroundings.
The indentation in the rock wall where they were hiding was barely a meter wide, just enough to fit the two of them pressed together.
The surrounding greenery could mask some of their scent, perhaps enough to hide from the previous beastmen, but if the beast tide headed this way, the blood from his wounds would surely attract them.
Therefore, he couldn't stay with Wan Wan; he would only drag her down.
As his gaze shifted, he looked up and saw a spot where the leaves were particularly lush among the thick branches.
He immediately gripped Bai Wanwan's shoulders and said solemnly, "Wan Wan, listen to me. In a moment, I'll hide you in the tree branches. No matter what happens, don't be afraid. Once I lead the beasts away, Xin Feng will surely find you, and you'll be safe then."
Bai Wanwan grabbed him. "You want to lead the beast tide away? No..."
Before Bai Wanwan could finish, Yan Lie cupped her face.
His gaze was so hot it seemed it could melt anything, yet it was also tinged with a layer of sorrow.
He, who was always as blazing as the sun, had never shown such an emotion before.
In the moment Bai Wanwan froze, a searing kiss descended.
He kissed her heavily and deeply, yet it was brief.
"Wan Wan, when I come back, will you give me a litter of cubs, okay?"
He was smiling, but there was no mirth in his eyes, only a deep reluctance to part and a lingering attachment.
Bai Wanwan pursed her lips tightly. "Don't go yet."
"Wan Wan, if I don't go now, it'll be too late."
The sound of trees snapping in the distance was accompanied by the piercing shrieks of some kind of beast.
The noise grew closer; Bai Wanwan could imagine those frenzied beasts trampling over every obstacle in their path.
"Wait for me just a little longer."
After speaking, Bai Wanwan quickly called out to peanut in her mind.
"peanut, come out quickly! I'm facing a life-or-death crisis. If you don't come out, you'll have to find a new Host."
As a fragile person from Modern Times, she only possessed a supportive cheat; let alone fighting a beast tide.
Even facing a single ordinary beast, she would be a goner.
"Host, it's not that I don't want to help you, but I'm just a system. Because you cannot get pregnant, the system points aren't enough to unlock the later options. Only when those options are unlocked will you have some offensive capabilities."
Hearing this, Bai Wanwan felt anxious.
"Wan Wan?"
Yan Lie's urging still didn't make Bai Wanwan let go.
Because she knew in her heart that if she let go and Yan Lie went to face the beast tide, his chances of survival would be slim.
Yan Lie was also reluctant to leave, but Wan Wan's safety was more important than anything.
He suddenly moved, his rough hand covering the back of Bai Wanwan's hand; he couldn't bear to pry it away forcefully. "Wan Wan, let go."
"I won't!" Bai Wanwan's eyes reddened as she stared fixedly at Yan Lie.
"I run fast," he said, his voice raspy. "Once I lead them away, I'll come back."
"You're lying! Listen to that commotion yourself; how could you possibly escape and come back?"
She pointed up at the tree branches. "We'll hide there together. If... the beasts find us, we'll face them together!"
Bai Wanwan's tone was firm; her life was practically on borrowed time anyway.
What had she done to deserve so many Males who would risk their lives to love and protect her?
Her heart wasn't made of iron; it had already melted long ago as they repeatedly risked everything for her.
Today, whether it was Yan Lie, Zhu Xiu, or Xin Feng.
She was willing to face life and death with them.
Yan Lie didn't answer; he just gently brushed his thumb across her cheek.
His movements were surprisingly gentle, a far cry from his usual carefree and silly demeanor.
"Wan Wan," he whispered her name, his tone firm. "I can't let you take the risk."
With that, he applied force and pried her hand away.
Bai Wanwan hurriedly tried to scramble up but ended up tripping.
Yan Lie saw it, but the sound of the beast tide was getting louder; he steeled his heart not to look and transformed into his Beast Form...
"Yan Lie!"
Yan Lie ignored her, about to leap away.
"Yan Lie, come back! There's a hole here!"
When she tripped just now, her hands had grasped at thin air, and she almost slid into a hole. She quickly pushed aside the grass outside it.
She joyfully called out to Yan Lie.
Fortunately, Yan Lie hadn't gone far yet; her shout made him turn back.
Excitedly, Bai Wanwan pointed at the hole by her feet with reddened eyes. "It's very deep here; we can crawl in. Let's hide inside until the beast tide passes."
Yan Lie hadn't expected such a lucky turn of events either.
He was also extremely reluctant to leave; parting from Wan Wan had only been a choice made out of necessity.
Now that there was a second option, he naturally didn't want to leave.
"Wan Wan, let me go in first."
He didn't know if there was danger inside the Cave, but Yan Lie felt that with his Innate Ability, dealing with whatever was in the Cave should be easier than facing the beast tide outside.
The entrance to the Cave was only big enough for one person. Yan Lie walked over quickly and slid inside nimbly.
Bai Wanwan was a bit nervous, staring at the Cave entrance where Yan Lie had disappeared. "Yan Lie?"
"Wan Wan, I'm fine. There doesn't seem to be any danger inside, and it's quite spacious. Come in quickly."
Leaving her alone outside was also dangerous.
After giving an "mm," Bai Wanwan poked her head in. Just as she was about to crawl, Yan Lie grabbed her hands and, with a gentle tug, pulled her inside.
After placing her gently beside him, Yan Lie quickly used his hands to smooth out the grass at the entrance.
It was very dim inside the Cave, but after a while, once Bai Wanwan got used to the light, she could see the Cave's interior by the light filtering through the entrance.
The Cave wasn't large, and there were some animal droppings left behind, which smelled a bit.
But compared to the danger outside, at least she and Yan Lie were still together now.
Yan Lie snapped out of it, opened his arms, and pulled her into a tight embrace.
He then lowered his head and kissed her forehead twice. "Wan Wan, we'll definitely be okay."
Bai Wanwan leaned against his shoulder, her chaotic heart finally calming down.
After holding him for a while, she said, "Let me treat your wounds first."
Yan Lie sat down with her help, his exposed hind legs covered in bloodstains.
Some wounds were deep enough to see the bone. Bai Wanwan clenched her teeth; if she ever found out who did this, she would make them pay dearly!
Seeing her expression, Yan Lie relaxed and grinned again. "Wan Wan, I'm fine. These wounds will heal in a couple of days."
Now that they were safe, he recalled Wan Wan's reluctant expression from earlier, and his heart felt full.
"Wan Wan, could you repeat what you just said?"
