31: Chapter 31 Envy

Xin Feng turned around and saw her running over, so he quickly walked back to support her.

"What's wrong? Don't rush, what if you fall down?"

"If you don't eat, you go up the mountain. It will be dark when you come back. Here, take this to eat on the mountain."

She stuffed two strips of dried meat and a few fruits into his arms. "Work is work, don't starve yourself."

After Xin Feng reached out to take them, he used his other hand to tuck a stray strand of hair behind her ear. "Okay, I'll go quickly and come back soon to roast meat for you."

Bai Wanwan's eyes curved into crescents, and she waved. "Then hurry up and go. I'll wait for you at home."

This scene was exactly what Hu Ya and her Beast Husbands witnessed.

It was the first time Hu Ya had seen that kind of expression on Xin Feng's face.

When facing her, he was always cold, without a single smile.

She was too focused on being angry to notice that the several Beast Husbands beside her had expressions of envy when they saw that interaction.

Although Males were supposed to unconditionally protect their Females and satisfy their every demand as much as possible,

they also wished their own Females would treat them the same way.

In the entire Cat Clan Tribe, they had never seen a Female like Bai Wanwan.

She seemed exceptionally good to her Beast Husband.

Because they lived close by, they often saw her smile at Xin Feng and never saw her lose her temper with him.

When Hu Ya turned her head, she saw her Beast Husbands staring at Bai Wanwan outside.

A surge of anger shot up. "What are you looking at? You all like Bai Wanwan, don't you? If you like her so much, go be her Beast Husbands! Get out, all of you, get out!"

Having been scolded for no reason, the Beast Husbands didn't dare to talk back and could only silently disperse to do their work.

After Bai Wanwan returned to the cave, she cut a piece of meat and flipped it back and forth on the stone slab to fry.

The oil sizzled and popped.

But after eating it for many consecutive meals, she was actually a little tired of it.

No staple food, no vegetables—it was not friendly to an omnivore like her at all.

But there was no other choice; she could only endure it a bit longer.

After the steak was fried, she still ate every last bite.

With nothing to do in the afternoon, she simply took a nap.

When she woke up, the cave was completely dark.

Wrapping herself in beast skin, she emerged from the covers into the cold weather.

She discovered Xin Feng still hadn't returned.

She walked to the doorway and opened the door.

A blast of cold wind rushed in, making her shiver.

It was almost dark; why hadn't Xin Feng come back?

It was too cold at the entrance, so she glanced out twice before closing the door again.

After looking back and forth like this three or four times, the distance was already a vast expanse, and the sky showed a dull, dark gray, but there was still no sign of Xin Feng.

Could something have happened to him?

She wanted to go out and check, but the biting cold wind that blew into her neck made her constantly hesitate.

But then she remembered how Xin Feng took on all the work, and when he saw her cold, he would come warm her up.

Gritting her teeth, she wrapped her beast skin tightly and rushed out into the dark night.

The wind outside was even stronger, making her teeth begin to chatter.

In the dim light, she saw a figure appear ahead. Her expression relaxed, and she rushed forward, shouting, "Xin Feng?"

Soon, the figure became clearer.

Xin Yu also saw her. "Wan Wan, it's me."

Xin Yu was carrying a hunted animal, and Xin Shan and Hu Ya's other Beast Husbands were not far behind him.

Bai Wanwan was slightly disappointed. She looked behind him. "You came back from the back mountain? Did you see Xin Feng?"

"No. Hasn't Xin Feng returned yet?"

"He hasn't returned. Then I'll go take a look."

Saying that, she walked around him, intending to move forward.

Xin Yu was worried that a Little Female like her going into the mountain might encounter wild beasts, so he immediately said, "Wan Wan, wait. It's not safe for you to go like this. I'll accompany you."

"No need. I'll just take a quick look and come back."

Bai Wanwan stepped forward and walked away.

Xin Yu was still carrying the prey and felt a bit anxious when he saw her just leave.

He quickly carried the prey and ran toward home.

Before even entering the cave, he threw the prey directly at the entrance and went to chase after Bai Wanwan.

Xin Shan and Hu Ya's other Beast Husbands returned from another path and almost collided with Xin Yu.

Xin Shan raised his hand to stop Xin Yu. "Xin Yu, it's dark. Where are you going?"

Hu Ya's other Beast Husbands ignored the two of them, carried their prey past them, and left.

Xin Yu hadn't caught up to Bai Wanwan and was a little anxious. "Brother, Xin Feng hasn't returned, and Wan Wan is going up the mountain to look for him. I followed to check on her."

When Xin Shan heard this, his expression immediately changed. Without thinking, he said directly, "I'll go with you."

Bai Wanwan hadn't actually planned to leave the Tribe and go up the mountain. She was worried about Xin Feng's safety, but she knew her own limits—with her frail physique that could be knocked over by a push, going up the mountain would just be a free meal for the fierce beasts.

She just felt uneasy staying home alone and wanted to come out to see, to calm her heart.

At the entrance to the Tribe's back mountain, two Males were standing guard.

Upon seeing her, they immediately warned, "It's dark. Females are not allowed on the mountain."

"I'm not going up. I'll just stand here and wait."

Just as she spoke, movement came from the woods not far outside the Tribe.

It sounded like a wild beast stepping on dry leaves.

The two Males immediately turned their heads alertly to look over.

Bai Wanwan also looked in that direction.

A moment later, a figure appeared within the sight of the few people.

The faint moonlight only illuminated a figure that wasn't very clear.

But Bai Wanwan recognized him—it was Xin Feng, carrying several bundles of firewood.

The stone in her heart finally settled. Bai Wanwan waved at him. "Xin Feng!"

Hearing the sound, Xin Feng looked up, saw Bai Wanwan, and immediately quickened his pace.

He was carrying two bundles of firewood in one hand, stacked high. She felt they looked heavy just looking at them.

But he was walking briskly and quickly reached her.

"Why are you here? Aren't you cold?"

He was carrying firewood and tried to move closer, but then reacted and could only step aside.

"You go first, so I don't bump into you."

Bai Wanwan moved to the side. "Look at you. I told you to carry less. Isn't it tiring carrying so much?"

Xin Feng shook his head and smiled at her. "Not tiring. This dry firewood isn't heavy."

He consciously slowed his pace so Bai Wanwan could keep up with him.

"I'll be going up the mountain these next few days. When it gets late, you wait for me at home. Don't come out. It's cold and dark outside; I worry about you."

"I just have nothing to do and can't sit still, so I wanted to come out and wait for you."

Hearing her words, Xin Feng felt a sense of reliance.

Even his half-grotesque face seemed gentle. "Then I'll come back early tomorrow. Once everything is prepared, I won't go out anymore. I'll stay home with you every day."

They talked as if no one else was around, walking toward home.

They completely failed to notice Xin Shan and Xin Yu standing at the fork in the road.

Their laughter slowly dissipated in the wind before Xin Yu couldn't help but speak, "Brother, Wan Wan is really good to Xin Feng."

Let alone whether Hu Ya would worry about them returning this late, Xin Yu even felt that if he were eaten by a fierce beast, she wouldn't be that sad.

With this realization, a wave of sourness welled up in his heart.

"If we hadn't been poisoned by the poisonous flower back then and become Wan Wan's Beast Husbands, would she have been this good to us too?"
