Chapter 32: About to Give Birth!
Bai Wanwan and Xin Feng returned to the cave, and Bai Wanwan's hands and feet were nearly frozen stiff.
Xin Feng touched her icy fingers and rubbed them in his palms, "I'll start a fire for you. Once we roast some food, you'll warm up."
"Mhm, then I'll go prepare the meat."
The two worked together, and the fire was quickly lit. The meat slices were all spread out on the stone slab.
Xin Feng picked up the just-cooked meat and placed it in her stone bowl, but Bai Wanwan intercepted it halfway. "You've been busy all day, aren't you hungry? You eat yours, I'll grab my own."
"I'm not hungry..."
As soon as he finished speaking, a rumbling sound echoed through the empty cave.
Bai Wanwan couldn't help but laugh and gave him a look, "Hurry up and eat yours."
Xin Feng's face turned slightly red. He still placed that piece of meat in her bowl before picking up a piece for himself.
"I won't go up the mountain tomorrow. I'll catch river shrimp and fill up a whole jar."
"One jar isn't enough. Tomorrow we'll roast them over the fire and dry out both the fish and the shrimp. They won't spoil easily and can be stored for a long time."
Dried fish and shrimp, with a little salt added, wouldn't just last longer, they could also serve as snacks.
She was actually quite the foodie, and being forced to stay confined in this place was truly doing her an injustice.
Both of them were hungry, so they didn't talk much, focusing on eating. They finished two large pieces of meat before finally feeling full.
Xin Feng quickly packed everything away and skillfully heated water.
After finishing her meal, Bai Wanwan felt lazy and didn't want to move.
She sat back against the Stone Stool covered with beast skin, watching him busy himself.
Xin Feng was truly a considerate and thoughtful Male. He brought her hot water to wash up and then tightly sealed the drafty parts of the cave entrance.
Bai Wanwan had already taken off her beast skin skirt and was lying on the Stone Bed wearing only coarse linen. The beast skin on her body felt cold and heavy, making it impossible to sleep.
She glanced at Xin Feng, who was pretending to be busy outside, and decisively called out, "Stop what you're doing. I'm cold, come here."
Saying that, she patted the edge of the bed, the meaning of urging him on was obvious.
Xin Feng was worried that the Little Female would catch a chill, but she was still awake now...
He tried to act natural and responded with an "Mhm." Only after checking that the fire was completely extinguished did he turn and walk towards the Stone Bed.
He took off his beast skin, fumbled his way onto the bed, and lay down stiffly among the beast skins.
He tried to raise his arm to hug her but worried that the Little Female might be displeased...
Bai Wanwan had no idea what he was thinking. She was freezing all over and just wanted a warm and comfortable sleep.
As soon as Xin Feng lay down, she unceremoniously burrowed into his embrace, wrapping her arms around his lean waist and pressing completely against him.
The scorching temperature of the Male's body immediately chased away the coldness on her.
She closed her eyes comfortably, rubbed her face against his chest, found a cozy spot, and stopped moving.
With a yawn, she quickly sank into a deep sleep.
Xin Feng was stiff all over. The Little Female was nestled in his arms, small and slight, her steady breathing puffing against his neck.
His body tensed even tighter, and it felt as if a fire had been lit in his heart.
His mouth felt a little dry, and he moved restlessly, trying to create a slight distance between them.
But Bai Wanwan, having just fallen asleep, instinctively chased after the heat source and immediately pressed back against him.
It took a long time before Xin Feng finally calmed down slightly.
He fumbled around and felt that the beast skin behind her was slightly drafty, so he immediately raised his arms to completely encircle the Little Female within his embrace.
He lowered his head, placed his lips on her forehead, and slowly closed his eyes.
That night, Bai Wanwan didn't feel cold at all and slept comfortably until morning.
When she woke up, she touched the spot beside her; Xin Feng was nowhere in sight.
She yawned and looked outside, but she didn't see anyone either.
"Xin Feng?"
Lifting the beast skin, she quickly wrapped herself in her beast skin skirt and called out once more toward the outside.
Still no response.
But soon, the cave door was opened from the outside, bringing in a gust of cool wind.
Bai Wanwan quickly pulled the beast skin up to cover herself again and looked at Xin Feng, who was quickly closing the door. "Did you go catch fish?"
"Mhm, I just caught a basinful. It's colder outside now, and the wind is strong. Stay inside the cave; don't come out."
Bai Wanwan also noticed that the weather was even colder than yesterday.
Because her clothing wasn't form-fitting, even wrapped in thick beast skin, the wind could still sneak into her collar.
There was hot water in the stone basin, and a piece of roasted meat beside it.
Bai Wanwan washed up contentedly and ate everything.
Only then did she walk to the entrance to peer out.
Xin Feng had set up an even larger stove outside, and the stone slab on top was a full meter wide.
The stone slab was covered with fish and shrimp, many of which were already roasted dry.
Bai Wanwan felt a surge of delight. Her stomach, which had just eaten, seemed to be stirring up cravings again.
As if sensing her thoughts, Xin Feng chuckled, "Wait a bit longer, let me roast a little more."
Bai Wanwan turned her head to look; the stone basin was already empty.
So, she squeezed next to him. "Go catch some more; I'll watch the fire."
Xin Feng hesitated for a moment. Wanting to stock up more food for her, he nodded and gave her his spot. "Then you watch it carefully; I'll be right back."
Bai Wanwan was exceptionally enthusiastic about eating, cooperating with Xin Feng to roast basin after basin.
By evening, the two woven vine baskets she had made earlier were completely full.
Xin Feng also breathed a sigh of relief. The Little Female loved eating these things. When the Snow Season arrived and prey became scarce, these dried fish and shrimp could sustain them for quite some time.
For the next few days, the two worked together with tacit understanding, preparing for the Rainy Season and the Snow Season.
Bai Wanwan's stone cave was quite spacious. Three of the stone chambers were used to store food and firewood; only the chamber where they slept had not yet been used to store anything.
That morning, Xin Feng moved as lightly as usual, wanting to take advantage of the last bit of time to go up the mountain to gather some firewood.
A "whooshing" sound came from outside.
The rain was too heavy and woke Bai Wanwan, who was still asleep.
She turned over, opened her eyes, her gaze still a little hazy.
"It's raining?"
Xin Feng wrapped himself in beast skin. "Lie down for a while; I'll go take a look."
As soon as the cave door opened, a strong wind carrying rainwater rushed in desperately.
It was impossible to see the situation outside; the entire Tribe was shrouded in mist.
Bai Wanwan followed closely behind him, leaned over to take a look, and was frightened by the sheer intensity of the downpour outside.
"Is the Rainy Season always like this every year?"
Xin Feng nodded. "It's like this for the first few days. Don't be scared!"
She was genuinely a little scared. If this kind of rain continued incessantly, it could easily cause landslides and mudslides.
The Cat Clan was situated right at the foot of the mountain.
Xin Feng sealed the door tightly and turned back to her. "Are you cold? I'll start a fire for you."
"Let's just endure it for now. Since it's raining, we can't use the firewood in the mountains. We have to conserve it."
Bai Wanwan thought that if they just held out, the ten-plus days would pass quickly.
Who knew this rain would last endlessly? The two were stuck in the dark cave with no entertainment whatsoever.
One or two days were bearable, but by the fifth or sixth day, she was so irritable that she had to be careful even around ants passing by, afraid that one careless move would crush them with the aura she carried.
Coupled with her pregnancy, her belly was swelling up like a balloon, making her uncomfortable. She couldn't eat well or sleep well.
Xin Feng cared for her patiently. Even waking up in the middle of the night when she craved roasted meat, he would get up to roast it for her.
That night, as soon as Bai Wanwan lay down, her belly was kicked hard, and she cried out in pain.
"Wan Wan, what's wrong?" Xin Feng immediately put down the beast skin in his hand and hurried over.
Bai Wanwan tried to answer but was kicked again, doubling the intense pain.
She clutched her stomach, gasping for breath. "Xin Feng, I think I'm about to give birth!"
