765: Chapter 765 Multiple Parties Visiting
"They're here," Clarissa said suddenly.
"What?" Peter was taken aback, then sensing something, he looked toward the door.
Lorna paused for a moment, then followed their gaze toward the door as well.
However, compared to the two who had sensed something, Lorna looked completely bewildered.
But soon, she knew what it was.
*Knock, knock, knock!*
"Open up! IRS!"
The door was being pounded violently, accompanied by a voice from outside.
The IRS!
That name was even more terrifying than the FBI showing up at your door!
Clarissa, however, knew that the group outside wasn't the IRS at all, but Sentinel Services.
It was just that the IRS's name was exceptionally effective!
Especially when going after Mutants... those at the bottom of society, or those from ordinary families.
Once they knew the location, they'd head straight to the door. There was no need for a dynamic entry that would cause a commotion, alert the target, or lead to a struggle.
With just the mention of the IRS, most Mutants would open the door in fear. Once they got inside smoothly...
Heh! Guess what happened next?
Oh boy! You Mutants are having a party and didn't invite me? Well, then I'm starting the buffet!
"They've come knocking," Clarissa said with a slight curl of her lips.
"The... the IRS?! Why would they come to the door?" Peter was a bit panicked. He was just an "ordinary person," and his fear of the IRS was instinctive.
"Don't panic, kid. Did you forget the phone call you just heard? That group outside is from Sentinel Services," Clarissa told Peter.
"Open up! IRS!"
"Hurry up! Otherwise, we will take forced action!"
"I know you're in there!"
The impatient voice rang out from outside again.
"Boss..." Lorna glanced at Clarissa. Her green hair began to glow faintly with a fluorescent light; she was planning to take action.
"Don't be in a hurry. Peter, go open the door," Clarissa said to Peter. "If there's a fight and the place gets trashed, the landlord will complain."
Peter was the one who rented the apartment. If the landlord came looking for trouble later, it would be Peter they'd find.
Even though they had money, it would still be a hassle, and Clarissa had a better way to solve this.
"Okay," Peter nodded, getting up to open the door.
As soon as the door opened, the people outside pushed their way in.
It was a large group of fully armed men carrying rifles.
As soon as they entered, they aimed their guns at Clarissa and the others. Peter was pressed against the side wall by a man using his forearm against Peter's throat.
"Hey, hey, hey! Your movements are quite rough!" Peter said with his hands up, pinned to the wall.
"Quiet!" the man said, glaring at Peter.
Then, a man who looked like a commander or something similar walked in at the very back, unarmed.
"Polaris." The commander looked at the green-haired woman standing next to a blonde beauty and nodded slightly. "We've had a hard time finding you! We even lost quite a few men for this."
"You stupid pieces of trash deserve to die!" Lorna shot back mercilessly. "It's good they're dead. Good riddance!"
"Tch~ I didn't come here to trade insults with you." The commander sneered with disdain. "You Mutants are heretics, trash! Mongrels! Do you understand? Low-life things!"
Hearing his words, Lorna immediately flared up with rage.
The commander ignored her and looked at Clarissa instead. "S.H.I.E.L.D. people... although you were fast and snatched Polaris away before we could, ha~ a Mutant working as an agent for S.H.I.E.L.D.? It's truly laughable!"
"I don't care about your identity or who you are. Helping a Mutant means making an enemy of the world! An enemy of America! We, Sentinel Services, will arrest you legally and rightfully!"
"Well said. Don't say it again next time," Clarissa said with a slight nod. Her gaze sharpened, and her pupils seemed to change slightly, appearing almost like vertical slits.
"What are you doing? How dare Sentinel Services interfere in S.H.I.E.L.D. business?" At that moment, several people walked in from outside.
It was Natasha and Agent Coulson, along with a group of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents.
A large crowd of people was now packed into this small apartment and the hallway outside.
As for the neighbors and civilians, who would dare show their face? They were all like ostriches, hiding away as quickly as possible. The further, the better!
"Natasha?" The commander clearly recognized Natasha. Seeing her and Agent Coulson arrive, he hadn't expected S.H.I.E.L.D. to move so quickly.
Nor did he expect S.H.I.E.L.D. to place such high importance on Lorna or this blonde woman.
"Logically speaking, Sentinel Services identified Lorna as a target long ago. S.H.I.E.L.D.'s act of swooping in halfway seems a bit much. Besides, since when did S.H.I.E.L.D. start getting involved in Mutant affairs?" the commander said, looking at Natasha.
The arrival of agents of Natasha and Agent Coulson's caliber was clearly the intent of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s top brass.
If nothing else, S.H.I.E.L.D. still held considerable power in America.
However, the previous division of labor was that Sentinel Services handled most Mutant matters, while S.H.I.E.L.D. did not, and appeared to be more mysterious than them.
Mysterious as they were, their influence was no less than that of the Sentinels.
And it seemed Congress intended for them to check and compete with each other.
But regardless, S.H.I.E.L.D. had crossed the line this time!
Therefore, Sentinel Services had sent him here to find Polaris and this blonde woman.
This was even though the high-level officials of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Sentinel Services had already "had a fight."
And most crucially, that one-eyed man from S.H.I.E.L.D. had somehow managed to get Congress to pass a resolution giving S.H.I.E.L.D. a certain amount of authority over Mutants.
What he didn't know was that the Avengers Initiative had been secretly activated by Nick Fury, reporting and seeking approval only from the World Security Council.
And the World Security Council, through unknown means, had once again prompted Congress to upgrade S.H.I.E.L.D.'s authority.
In short, S.H.I.E.L.D. now had even greater authority than Sentinel Services, specifically in the area of Mutants.
Clarissa watched with interest as the two different factions engaged in a war of words.
"Lorna, look, isn't this quite lively?" Clarissa said with a smile.
"Tch~ It's just dogs biting dogs, a mouthful of fur!" Lorna had not a shred of goodwill toward these privileged classes.
Meanwhile, the agent who had been pinning Peter had let go of him at some point. Peter was also watching these "high-level figures" bicker with a face full of curiosity.
"Hey~ first time seeing something like this, it's pretty rare, bro~ Is your superior always like this?" Peter asked the agent who had pinned him earlier.
The agent glanced at him and ignored him.
But after a moment, a muffled voice came from inside the helmet: "It's my first time seeing it too."
