237: Immortality, the human pursuit of eternal life.
Meng Ziyi hesitated for a moment and said, "Alright, since you insist on doing this, let's help her. I'll go in first; you guys stay outside and keep watch."
Ye Bai nodded.
Meng Ziyi gripped her Dagger and walked cautiously toward the Tomb Chamber. Yang Mi grabbed Ye Bai's sleeve and asked in a low voice, "Brother Ye, is she really going to be okay?"
Ye Bai patted her head, signaling her to be at ease.
After Meng Ziyi went inside, Yang Mi became even more apprehensive.
Ye Bai said, "Stay here and don't move around, and don't touch anything else recklessly. I'll go in first to take a look."
After saying that, he stepped into the Tomb Chamber.
As soon as he entered, a gust of cold, eerie wind rushed toward him. Ye Bai leaned to the side to avoid it and grabbed a nearby torch to illuminate the way ahead, only to discover that the Tomb Chamber branched out in all directions, with seven or eight different paths!
He couldn't help but marvel; this Tomb Chamber was truly complex enough!
Ye Bai sized up his surroundings. The furniture in this Tomb Chamber was perfectly preserved, and besides some Funerary Objects, the most eye-catching thing was the outer coffin. He walked closer and saw that the Coffin Lid had already been pried off.
Ye Bai scanned with his flashlight, only to see that the outer coffin was empty.
He sighed, thinking his guess was indeed correct. Thus, he turned and walked in another direction.
Not long after, Meng Ziyi emerged from within, looking slightly disheveled, but she held a roll of parchment in her hand.
Ye Bai hurried forward and asked with a smile, "Did you find an exit?"
Meng Ziyi shook her head and said distressedly, "No, this Tomb Chamber is too massive; there's simply no way to find it. I suspect there's more than one exit here."
Yang Mi said anxiously, "How is that possible! We saw clearly when we came in just now—there were no forks in the road and no secret doors. It was just right here."
Meng Ziyi said, "The architectural scale of this Tomb Chamber is enormous; every cave is different."
Yang Mi muttered, "How can there be such a strange place..."
Meng Ziyi said, "There are some things in this world that are so magical you wouldn't even dare to imagine them."
She picked up the Ancient Volume to look through it. Although she was young, she was already very knowledgeable. She quickly found the epitaph and read the contents to Ye Bai. Ye Bai glanced at it casually; it was indeed just as Meng Ziyi had described.
He closed the Ancient Volume and said, "It seems we need to go to the Main Tomb Chamber."
Yang Mi asked in surprise, "Are there treasures there?"
Ye Bai said, "The contents recorded in this Ancient Volume are similar to the classic of mountains and seas. Think about it, why would the First Emperor of Qin in history build a mausoleum here? It was likely to seek the Elixir of Immortality. I suspect this mausoleum is the Palace of Longevity."
Meng Ziyi looked at him with admiration: "You're quite smart, knowing that the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor must hide the Elixir of Immortality, though I didn't expect it to be designed so covertly."
Yang Mi said, "Then what should we do now?"
Ye Bai said, "I'll take you two out of here; you'll be responsible for contacting our companions outside."
Yang Mi hesitated: "Then what about Brother Ye?"
“I'm going to the Main Tomb Chamber.”
Meng Ziyi snorted: "You're crazy! The Main Tomb Chamber is bound to be fraught with danger. I advise you not to play the hero; just go back outside and wait obediently."
Yang Mi also urged, "Yeah, Brother Ye, this place is too sinister. I'm scared, please stay with me!"
Ye Bai said, "You two stay here and don't move. I'll go to the Main Tomb Chamber alone."
His attitude was firm, leaving no room for negotiation.
The two of them couldn't win him over, so they had to give up.
Ye Bai raised his sword and walked forward.
This Tomb Chamber was surprisingly spacious, filled with boxes, porcelain, calligraphy and paintings, as well as gold and silver jewelry—it was extravagant to the extreme. On the walls hung Murals depicting the appearance of a young woman, vivid and lifelike.
Ye Bai walked to a corner and picked up a jade pendant.
The carving of this jade pendant was exquisite, the jade quality fine, and its value considerable. He kept the jade pendant and continued searching other areas.
He bypassed a vase and suddenly heard the sound of water dripping, like a flowing spring, tinkling. He looked toward the source of the sound and was instantly stunned.
That spring was actually three meters away, bubbling with white steam. At the bottom of the spring, a deep pool had gathered, and in the center of the pool stood a green vine. On the green vine grew two crystal-clear Emerald Fruits, emitting an alluring fragrance.
Ye Bai swallowed and couldn't help but walk a bit closer. He crouched down and reached out to touch that Emerald Fruit; it felt cold and soft to the touch, like congealed fat or jade, making it hard to put down.
He looked up at his surroundings and saw many terracotta figurines and wooden puppets hanging on the walls. Ye Bai observed carefully; these puppets were very realistic—men and women, old and young—vivid and lifelike, looking exactly like real people.
His mind stirred, and he reached out to pick up a wooden puppet, pinched its nose, and twisted it hard.
Crack, crack.
The puppet's lips trembled, letting out a series of eerie groans.
At the same time, a dark shadow approached silently and suddenly attacked Ye Bai's neck.
Ye Bai reacted extremely quickly, dodging to the side. However, the person's movements were swift and agile, reaching him in the blink of an eye and striking out fiercely with a palm.
Ye Bai dodged and smashed a fist into the opponent's shoulder.
The opponent groaned and retreated while clutching their injured arm. Ye Bai chased after them, about to deliver a finishing blow, when he heard Yang Mi cry out, "Brother Ye! Watch your step!"
Ye Bai quickly pulled back his hand. Looking down, a crack suddenly opened in the floor, and a blood-red claw reached out from below. His face changed drastically with fright, and he quickly rolled to the side, barely dodging the Blood Claw. The Blood Claw struck the ground, sending out ripples.
Cold sweat broke out on Ye Bai's forehead. After steadying himself, he noticed that where the claw had been, a row of sharp, pointed teeth was revealed, with thick, sticky blood flowing between them.
The blood was dark red, stinking and pungent, making one feel nauseous just smelling it.
Ye Bai looked at the spot where the Blood Claw had disappeared, his heart pounding. Fortunately, he had escaped disaster just now; otherwise, he would have become food in the belly of that Blood Claw!
What on earth was that thing? Why would it be in the Tomb Chamber?
Meng Ziyi and Yang Mi had also seen this scene, and both were shaken.
Yang Mi said with a trembling voice, "What was that just now?"
Ye Bai said in a heavy voice, "That Blood Claw is very likely a Zombie!"
A Zombie? Meng Ziyi frowned: "A Zombie? Wouldn't that be even more terrifying than ghosts and monsters?"
Yang Mi shrank back and pulled Meng Ziyi with her. Ye Bai said, "Don't be afraid; it shouldn't be able to kill people."
"But what if we get scratched?"
Ye Bai said, "Don't worry, since it can't hit anyone, it will run away on its own."
Just as he finished speaking, a rustling sound was heard. The Blood Claw emerged again, staring at Ye Bai, its throat emitting a hoarse, piercing roar as it lunged forward with bared fangs and brandished claws.
Ye Bai swung his sword and cut off half of its head. Blood sprayed everywhere, splashing all over Ye Bai's face.
The Blood Claw's torso swayed a couple of times before collapsing to the ground, twitching a few times before becoming still.
Ye Bai wiped the blood off with his sleeve and walked toward the Zombie. He looked down at the Zombie and found that its skull was completely rotten, the flesh inside turned into a gooey, disgusting pus.
