11: Chapter 11 Thank You Fee
"If you keep acting up in front of me, I'll hand you over to the police!"
The children laughed even louder upon hearing this.
"Mister, can't you be a bit more original? That kind of talk only works on three-year-olds; it won't fool us."
Shen Yan was at a loss for words. He turned to look at the Border Collie lying on the ground, barely breathing, and asked:
"Where did this dog come from?"
The lead child rolled his eyes and picked up a fist-sized rock from the ground.
"Stop talking! Take this!"
With that, he forcefully hurled the rock in his hand at Shen Yan.
Shen Yan hadn't expected the child to dare throw things at an adult.
To prevent the dog behind him from being hit, he blocked the rock with his hand.
Seeing the first rock miss its mark, the child quickly threw a second one.
Gradually, the other children followed suit.
Shen Yan wasn't the type to just stand there and let them pelt him.
After being hit a few times, he stepped forward and slapped the child who had started it all across the face several times.
For the past four months, he had been doing hard manual labor every day.
His skin had grown rough, and the strength in his hands had increased.
The child's face immediately swelled up from the slaps.
A burning pain spread across his face, and the child burst into tears with a loud "waaah."
"Waaaah! I want my daddy! I'm going to tell him to come and beat you to death!"
Seeing this, the other children also started crying.
"Waaaah, Mommy, save me!"
"Waaaah! The bad man is here! Daddy, where are you?"
In an instant, the air was filled with the wailing and howling of children.
Shen Yan ignored them completely and walked straight to the Border Collie, crouching down.
Actually, he quite liked dogs.
He had wanted to raise one before, but Chen Ling wouldn't let him.
She claimed dog hair would affect her breathing and refused to let him and Youyou buy one no matter what.
"Zhuo, zhuo, zhuo!"
Shen Yan tentatively called out to the Border Collie several times to see if it still responded.
The Border Collie was quite intelligent; it knew he was there to save it.
Hearing his voice, it immediately lifted its head to respond.
Seeing that the dog could still react, Shen Yan didn't hesitate to pull out his phone and look for the nearest pet hospital.
"Wait a moment, I'm taking you to the hospital right now!"
As he spoke, he dialed Chen Guangke's number.
"Old Chen! I'm over at the grass near Exit A. Get here quickly, it's an emergency!"
Chen Guangke was startled by his words and rushed over without stopping.
"What are you doing?"
Chen Guangke looked at Shen Yan with a face full of confusion as he struggled to lift the Border Collie.
Shen Yan chuckled and replied:
"Give me a hand. I'm planning to take it to the pet hospital."
Chen Guangke frowned and gestured with his hands:
"With a dog this big, are you sure your place even has enough room for it?"
Shen Yan clicked his tongue.
"Who said I'm keeping it? Hurry up and stop asking so many questions. Help me get this dog to the hospital first."
Chen Guangke's mouth was full of complaints, but his actions were decisive as he helped out.
After arriving at the hospital.
The Border Collie was quickly taken by the doctor for an examination.
Before the exam, Shen Yan took off the dog tag from the Border Collie's neck.
Seeing this, Chen Guangke leaned in toward Shen Yan and asked:
"Is there owner information on that?"
Shen Yan nodded, pulled out his phone, and dialed the number on the tag.
A woman answered the phone.
"Hello, who is this?"
Shen Yan glanced at the dog tag and replied:
"Hello, are you the owner of the dog named Xiaobao?"
As soon as he finished speaking, Xiaobao's owner became visibly emotional.
"You found Xiaobao? Where is he?!"
Shen Yan gave her the address and told her to come over now.
After hanging up, he noticed Chen Guangke watching him with an expectant, mischievous look.
"What are you doing? Why that sleazy grin?"
Chen Guangke laughed and playfully hit Shen Yan. "This is a perfectly normal, handsome smile, okay? How is it sleazy?"
Shen Yan replied with certainty, "It really is. If you don't believe me, go look in the mirror over there."
Chen Guangke touched his face suspiciously.
"How could that be? Have I gotten uglier lately?"
Then, he suddenly realized he had been teased by Shen Yan.
"Shen! Yan! Can you be a bit more serious for once?!"
Shen Yan was left speechless.
Please, who exactly is the one not being serious?
After their banter, Chen Guangke got down to business.
"So, you went to the park just to find this dog?"
Shen Yan shook his head, then nodded.
He hadn't gone to Seaview Park for the dog, but once he was there, he had indeed been looking for it.
Seeing him shaking and nodding his head, Chen Guangke couldn't figure out what he meant.
"Agh, fine!"
"I don't care if you went to the park for the dog or not. I just want to ask you one thing: are you interested in the dog's owner?"
Shen Yan was stunned.
He pinched his ear, unable to believe what he had just heard.
"What did you just say? Say that again?"
Chen Guangke cleared his throat, leaned into his ear, and shouted:
"I! Asked! You! Are you interested in the dog's owner?!"
Shen Yan shook his head without hesitation.
"Have you gone crazy?"
"I don't even know the owner. How could I possibly like her?!"
Chen Guangke didn't believe him.
If Shen Yan didn't like the owner, why would he look for the dog? And even personally bring it to the hospital?
"Stop lying to me. I think it's a good thing that you like someone. Don't dwell on that trashy woman; we need to start a new life."
Shen Yan couldn't help himself and flicked Chen Guangke's forehead again.
"What is going through your head all day? I said it already! I don't know that woman at all!"
Speak of the devil.
Just as he finished speaking, a young woman wearing a leather jacket with her hair in a low ponytail rushed in through the door.
"Where's Xiaobao? Where is my Xiaobao!"
Hearing this, Shen Yan and Chen Guangke exchanged a look and stepped forward together.
"Are you the owner of the Border Collie named Xiaobao?"
The woman paused, looked them up and down, and replied:
"Yes, that's me. Are you the ones who found Xiaobao?"
Shen Yan caught himself about to nod, but Chen Guangke took two steps back and said:
"Wait, I'm not the one who saved your dog—he is!"
The woman shifted her gaze to Shen Yan and asked:
"Thank you. But I want to know, what exactly happened to my Xiaobao? Why was he brought to the hospital?"
Shen Yan told her the whole story from beginning to end.
After hearing it, the woman's face turned red with anger.
"How despicable! Where are those kids? I'm going to settle the score with them right now!"
Shen Yan replied, caught between laughter and tears, "They ran off long ago. You'd better stay here and watch over your dog. If there's nothing else, I'll be going."
He turned to leave.
The woman hurriedly stopped him.
"Wait! I haven't given you a reward yet!"
