246: Chapter 246 Watching a Movie
Liu Hui pursed her lips and said nothing.
She knew Xiao Ting was right.
But seeing that Xiao Ting had endured for so long, and was about to finally secure her permanent position only to have it fall through at the last minute, she couldn't help but feel a pang of heartache.
The atmosphere began to grow serious.
The only sound in the air was the clinking of chopsticks against the soup base.
Seeing that the moods of the two people in front of him were getting worse and worse, Shen Yan sighed and said to them, “How about this, I’ll ask a friend to keep an eye out for any suitable jobs for Xiao Ting locally?”
Hearing his offer, Xiao Ting’s eyes lit up.
Although she didn't know what Shen Yan did for a living, judging by the manager's attitude toward him, Shen Yan's status was certainly extraordinary.
If Shen Yan could really find a suitable job for her, she absolutely had to seize this opportunity.
“Really?!”
“Won’t that be too much trouble for you?”
Though she said that, Xiao Ting’s bright eyes clearly already took Shen Yan’s words to heart.
“Really,” Shen Yan looked earnestly into Xiao Ting’s eyes. “Once my word is out, it’s hard to take back. I won't stand you up.”
As soon as he finished speaking,
Xiao Ting and Liu Hui’s moods finally lifted.
They exchanged a smile and happily picked up their chopsticks to start eating the beef noodles.
After finishing a bowl of beef noodles, both of them felt considerably warmer inside.
Xiao Ting glanced at the time, proactively stood up to pay the bill, and said, “Okay, it’s getting late. I’ll head back first.”
As soon as she said that, Liu Hui immediately stood up and said, “We’ll walk you out!”
After Xiao Ting paid the bill, she waved her hand: “Walk me where? Aren’t you two going on a date today? It’s already evening; if you don’t go now, you won’t have time.”
If Xiao Ting hadn't mentioned the date, Liu Hui would have almost forgotten about it. She glanced somewhat shyly at Shen Yan standing beside her and said,
“Even… even if we were going on a date, it wouldn’t take long to walk you back. It’s on the way anyway.”
Xiao Ting shook her head and directly ushered the two of them out of the beef noodle shop, saying as she pushed them, “My place is in the urban village. How could it be on your way? Alright, stop dawdling. Hurry up and go.”
“If you really care about me, then help me keep an eye out for local job postings, preferably at a hospital. Thank you!”
Since she had put it that way, it was difficult for Shen Yan and Liu Hui to force her to let them take her home.
So, as she got into the car, Liu Hui said to Xiao Ting, who was standing at the intersection, “Okay, then be careful on your way. Message me when you get home.”
Xiao Ting nodded with a smile.
Only when Xiao Ting’s figure was getting further and further away did Liu Hui open her mouth somewhat lost, saying, “Xiao Ting is a very good girl.”
Shen Yan looked at the traffic ahead and replied, “Indeed, she’s quite a clever and lovely young lady.”
Liu Hui raised an eyebrow and turned to look at Shen Yan.
“You think she’s nice too?”
Shen Yan instinctively sensed a dangerous aura. He cleared his throat and replied to Liu Hui, “I didn’t mean anything else; I just think she’s a bit like Xiao Ya.”
The moment he finished speaking, Liu Hui burst out laughing.
“Why are you so nervous? I’m not jealous of Xiao Ting.”
Shen Yan pouted.
“Whether I make you jealous of Xiao Ting or not, I’m going to say what needs to be said.”
“Xiao Ting is indeed a very lively and cute girl, but once she enters society, she will definitely have to endure some hardships on her own. You don’t need to worry about her every little thing.”
Liu Hui somewhat disagreed with Shen Yan’s words.
“Xiao Ting is my friend, and her family is in some difficulty. As a good friend, what’s wrong with me looking out for her a bit?”
“Aren’t you also very worried about your sister?”
Shen Yan frowned and retorted in a low voice, “That’s not the same…”
Liu Hui shook her head and remained silent.
...
Seven-thirty in the evening.
Shen Yan and Liu Hui entered the cinema together.
Many movies were currently showing in the cinema, all starring famous movie stars.
Shen Yan had no interest in these celebrities, but he felt that since it was a date, a movie was essential, so he had bought two tickets in advance.
“Oh my gosh! These are for an advance screening. How did you manage to get them?”
Seeing the surprise shining in Liu Hui’s eyes, Shen Yan curled his lips and chuckled lightly, “Old Chen helped me get the contact information for a scalper.”
Liu Hui understood.
These tickets were bought from a scalper.
“How much were these two tickets?”
Shen Yan pulled Liu Hui’s hand as they entered the cinema and replied, “One thousand yuan each. It’s not too expensive, actually.”
Liu Hui’s eyes widened.
“And you say that’s not expensive?!”
As the words fell, the popcorn in her hand tilted slightly.
“Smack!”
“Ah!”
The popcorn scattered across the cinema carpet like a shower of heavenly flowers.
Liu Hui gasped and hurriedly asked Shen Yan, “What should we do? Should we find staff to clean it up?”
Shen Yan placed the bucket of popcorn he was holding into Liu Hui’s hands and said, “I’ll go find someone. You go sit down first.”
After saying that, he bent down, got up from inside the theater, and walked out into the lobby.
There were quite a few staff members in the cinema lobby. Just as he was about to find a staff member to explain the situation, he heard someone call out his name beside him.
“Shen Yan!”
Shen Yan turned around doubtfully and found that the person who called him was Lü Yan.
“Lawyer Lü?!”
Lü Yan walked toward him with a smile: “What? Are you that surprised to see me?”
Shen Yan scratched his head somewhat awkwardly.
“No, I was just startled because you called out suddenly. Why are you here?”
Lü Yan blinked and raised the popcorn bucket in her hand to reply, “Why else would I be at a cinema if not to watch a movie?”
“You… you came alone too?”
Shen Yan quickly shook his head.
“No.”
Lü Yan nodded and then asked, “Are you here with the girl you met at the company last time?”
Shen Yan was at a loss for words.
“No, no, neither of them. I came with my girlfriend.”
Although Lü Yan already knew Shen Yan had a girlfriend, her heart couldn't help but feel a sharp, needle-like pain upon hearing that Shen Yan was currently on a date with his girlfriend.
To prevent her expression from looking strange, she forced a smile that looked somewhat awkward and said, “That’s great. Even with such a busy work schedule, you still have time to take your girlfriend out on a date.”
Because Shen Yan already knew Lü Yan liked him, he couldn't show off his affection in front of her with a clear conscience.
He first clenched his right hand into a fist and placed it by his mouth, letting out a soft cough, before saying to Lü Yan, “Thank you for what you did at the restaurant earlier. If it weren’t for you, I would have had to find other ways to deal with them.”
Hearing this, Lü Yan instantly broke into a triumphant smile.
