56: Chapter 56 Good Deeds
Just as the system said, there was indeed a black bag there.
"Zip..."
Unzipping it, the bag was full of hundred-yuan bills.
Shen Yan had originally intended to just take the black bag away.
But seeing all that cash, he changed his mind.
This was a hospital.
The bag's owner was very likely a patient.
What if the owner was waiting for this money to save their life?
He also had a younger sister who was currently ill.
A while ago, he had been overwhelmed with worry because of it.
No one knew better than him how desperate it felt to have no money when someone was sick.
After sitting in the stairwell for ten minutes, Shen Yan decided to give the bag to the nurse's station.
He would let the nurses there help him find the bag's owner.
Just as he was heading to the nurse's station with the bag, he ran right into Liu Hui, who had just finished a surgery.
Liu Hui's face was a mixture of surprise and concern.
"What are you doing here? Are you feeling unwell?"
Shen Yan quickly explained:
"No, I came here specifically to see you."
Liu Hui blushed and walked to her office door, saying:
"Come in and let's talk."
Shen Yan nodded and followed Liu Hui into the office.
After they sat down, Liu Hui asked Shen Yan:
"Coming to see me so suddenly, do you need help with something?"
Liu Hui was truly quite clever.
Shen Yan admired her in his heart.
"You guessed right. I came to see you today mainly to ask if you're free the night after tomorrow."
Liu Hui answered without hesitation:
"I am!"
After saying that, she added another sentence.
"If it's you, I'm free no matter what day it is."
Shen Yan's face turned red from her flirting.
An ambiguous atmosphere crackled in the air.
Shen Yan cleared his throat and got down to business.
"It's like this: there's a business banquet the night after tomorrow, and I'm short a date. If you're free, I'd like to invite you to be my companion for the evening."
Liu Hui smiled, "Sure, I just happened to buy two new dresses."
"By the way, what's this black bag?"
Mentioning the black bag reminded Shen Yan of his earlier plan.
"I almost forgot if you hadn't asked. I found this bag in the stairwell. It's full of money, and I'm worried some patient might have accidentally lost it..."
Liu Hui frowned, walked over to the black bag, and took a look inside.
"It really is all money... In that case, come with me to the nurse's station. I'll ask the nurses what's going on."
With that, the two of them went to the nurse's station together.
"Xiao Jin, check the surveillance footage and see who left this bag in the stairwell."
Upon hearing this, the nurse immediately pulled up the footage.
In the footage, the person who dropped the bag in the stairwell was an elderly man.
"He dropped it, and it looks like it was intentional... What's in this bag?"
Hearing the nurse's question, Liu Hui replied:
"It's full of money, probably tens of thousands. Check which ward the patient is in, and I'll take the bag to him."
With the nurse's help, they quickly found out the elderly man was in Room 202, Building 4 of the Inpatient Department.
"Then I'll leave you to your work. If there's nothing else, I'll be going."
Seeing Shen Yan about to leave, Liu Hui hurriedly stopped him.
"Is there something else?"
"If you're not busy, come with me. After all, you're the one who found the bag, so it's only right that you return it to him."
Since Liu Hui put it that way, how could Shen Yan possibly refuse her?
So, the two of them walked toward the Inpatient Department.
Since Liu Hui had only recently confessed to Shen Yan, the atmosphere between them was a bit flirtatious.
On the way, Shen Yan mentioned Grandma Liu coming to see him today.
"Aunt Liu came to see me today..."
Liu Hui opened her mouth and replied:
"She didn't say anything to you, did she?"
"Oh... because I have a habit of talking to my aunt on the phone, I tell her everything that happens. She didn't say anything to you, did she?"
Shen Yan blinked and asked back, "What do you think she would say to me?"
Liu Hui pursed her lips and played dumb:
"How should I know what my aunt would say to you... Anyway, we're at the Inpatient Department. Let's go find that patient!"
The corners of Shen Yan's mouth curled up. "Alright."
Room 202 was a private ward.
When they entered, the old man was receiving an IV drip.
"Doctor?"
The old man murmured weakly and then struggled to sit up in bed.
Seeing him struggle so much, Shen Yan walked over to help crank up the bed for the old man.
"Thank you, young man."
Shen Yan shook his head and showed the black bag in his hand to the old man.
"Sir, is this bag yours?"
A flash of disgust crossed the old man's eyes.
"It's not mine! Take it away!"
Liu Hui stepped forward and said:
"This is yours, isn't it? The surveillance footage shows you throwing this bag into the stairwell."
The old man remained silent, turning his head away and refusing to acknowledge it.
Seeing his refusal to accept it, Liu Hui asked in confusion, "This bag is full of money. May I ask why you would throw money into a hospital stairwell?"
The old man snorted.
"So what if it's money?"
"What can money even do?!"
It was obvious the old man harbored resentment toward this money.
"Sir, was this money given to you by your family?"
Shen Yan guessed that the money had been given to the old man by his family.
"I already said, this bag isn't mine. If you want it, just take it!"
Liu Hui placed the black bag on a chair.
"Fine if you don't want to admit it. I'll call your family right now and ask them if this money belongs to them."
Upon hearing this, the old man immediately grew anxious.
"How can you do this?!"
"I don't want this money. Is it wrong of me to want to leave it for someone who needs it more?!"
Seeing the old man's agitation, Shen Yan quickly said, "We didn't say you were wrong."
"It's just that this is a large sum of money, after all. We need to know why you threw it away."
The old man sighed.
"This money was given to me by my daughter. It's too much, and I don't want it. You can take it and do whatever you want with it."
Liu Hui frowned; she couldn't quite wrap her head around it.
"Since your daughter gave you this money, why did you throw it away?"
Shen Yan looked around the ward.
There weren't many things in the room.
Just a kettle and some of the old man's personal belongings.
He thought for a moment and added:
"Does your daughter not visit you very often?"
The old man closed his eyes and said sarcastically, "Not often?"
"She hasn't come to see me at all!"
Perhaps because it had been so long since anyone had chatted with him, once he started talking, he couldn't quite stop.
"From the time I got sick until now, she hasn't visited once."
"She says she's busy, but I'm sick! Can't she set aside her work to come see me?!"
The old man grew more and more agitated as he spoke, his eyes reddening toward the end.
Shen Yan quickly comforted him.
"Of course, she is certainly in the wrong for that, but this is still hard-earned money from your daughter."
