283: Chapter 283 Overestimating One's Abilities

Shen Yan did not take the shop manager's threat to heart.

Although he wasn't confident he could escape unscathed, Shen Yan hated being threatened by others the most. Moreover, the shop manager was clearly trying to swindle him, so he couldn't let the manager have his way.

Thinking this, he asked the shop manager, "Aren't you afraid I'll call the police?"

The shop manager burst into loud laughter, as if he had heard the biggest joke in the world.

"If you want to call the police, then go ahead and call! Everything I said is the truth. The materials we used for your car are top-notch! If you refuse to pay, then you are skipping payment, and if the police come, they will be arresting you!"

Shen Yan understood why the shop manager was so arrogant.

It was because his shop staff had genuinely repaired the car, and the materials used were indeed good ones.

Although there was some markup, all of this fell within the scope of a private transaction.

The police couldn't manage this kind of matter. Even if he wanted someone to intervene, he would have to contact the City Management Bureau.

After realizing this, he nodded at the shop manager and said, "I understand. Then I really won't pay this money. If you have the guts, don't let me leave this shop."

The shop manager rolled his eyes and lazily gestured with his chin toward the few large men behind him, saying, "Well, here's another one who refuses a toast only to be forced to drink a forfeit. It's your turn to step up. Remember to go easy on him; don't actually beat him up badly."

Hearing this, those large men immediately rushed forward.

"Aaaah!"

"You son of a bitch!"

"Damn it! This guy is actually a trained fighter!"

Those large men thought that since Shen Yan was so thin and weak, just a couple of punches would take him down. They didn't expect Shen Yan to have martial arts training.

Not only did they fail to gain any advantage over Shen Yan, but they were beaten up by him instead.

The shop manager's expression changed, and he shouted at the large men, "What are you standing there for? Hurry up and move!"

After exchanging glances, those large men gritted their teeth and rushed toward Shen Yan again.

This time, Shen Yan didn't hold back. He directly knocked all those large men to the ground.

"Is this all you've got?"

As the words fell, the shop manager gasped sharply.

This was the first time he had run into such a tough obstacle.

"I'm warning you, don't mess around! Be careful, or I'll call the police!"

Shen Yan nodded, took out his phone, and replied, "No need to be careful. I'll call the police for you."

With that, he directly pressed the three digits on his phone.

Shop Manager: "..."

It's over. Why does he feel like he's going to be finished by this guy?!

β€” β€”

Two and a half hours later.

Shen Yan and the shop manager were sitting together at the police station.

In front of them was a police officer taking statements.

"So you mean you were forced into a rope-skipping scam?"

Hearing the officer's question, Shen Yan's mouth twitched, and he replied to the officer, "It wasn't rope skipping. It was them inflating the repair price under the guise of fixing the car."

The officer nodded and confirmed, "You were rope-skipped, and then what?"

Shen Yan: "..."

Forget it. Let him say whatever he wants.

Thinking this, he continued to explain to the officer, "Then I didn't want to pay. I said I'd call the police. He told me to go ahead, but before I could even call, he called his guys out to beat me up."

As soon as he finished speaking, the shop manager sitting next to him hurriedly interjected, "No, no, no! That's not how it happened! We are just an ordinary car repair shop. We finally managed to finish repairing his car, but then he refused to pay."

"Because he refused to pay, we couldn't let him leave, so I asked my staff to stop him. Unexpectedly, he was trained and knocked all my men down in a few moves."

At this point, his eyes reddened, and he said with a wronged expression, "My staff are still crying out in pain even now. I don't know if their hands are broken."

"Officer... Brother, you must be kind enough to uphold justice for me!"

The officer didn't answer the shop manager. He turned to look at Shen Yan and asked, "Did you really hit those people?"

Shen Yan nodded and replied, "I did hit them, but it was in legitimate self-defense."

The shop manager quickly interjected, "Clearly, you attacked first! How can we say it was self-defense? Officer Brother, you must help us uphold justice!"

The officer was getting annoyed.

"I will find out exactly how things happened. You don't need to keep interrupting here."

Seeing that his tactic of playing the victim didn't work, the shop manager could only sheepishly shut his mouth and continue listening to the conversation between the officer and Shen Yan.

Officer: "How much was the total repair fee he quoted you?"

Shen Yan: "1.2 million."

The officer's eyes widened, a look of disbelief on his face.

"How much did you say?!"

Shen Yan repeated, "1.2 million."

The officer sucked in a sharp breath.

The total price of the car he bought a while ago was only a fraction of Shen Yan's repair bill!

Thinking this, he put on a cold expression and asked the shop manager, who dared not speak, "Is the price you quoted really 1.2 million?"

The shop manager quickly explained, "I didn't just quote that price randomly. His car is a luxury vehicle. The paint job alone cost us a lot of effort and capital..."

Before he could finish speaking, the officer impatiently interrupted him.

"Just tell me if you really quoted that price or not?"

The shop manager pursed his lips and nodded, "It was that price..."

After hearing this, the officer shook his head and continued to ask about the situation at the time.

Because there was no surveillance footage, and the testimonies from both sides were inconsistent, the officer's suggestion was for them to settle the matter privately.

"Settle?"

Hearing Shen Yan's question, the officer nodded and replied,

"There is no surveillance inside the shop. If they insist that you attacked first and that you maliciously skipped payment, then... the situation will become much more complicated."

Shen Yan closed his eyes and took a deep breath.

He knew the shop manager definitely wouldn't install surveillance in the shop, but he hadn't expected the police to advise him to just accept the loss because there was no footage.

He confirmed with the officer, "So, if I don't settle, I will be detained, is that right?"

The officer nodded, looking at him with sympathy, and said, "I see you aren't someone short of money. If it really doesn't work out, just pay this fee. Consider it taking a silent loss."

Because he had money, he had to admit fault for this incident?

Shen Yan found it ridiculous, but he didn't want to argue with the police.

He leaned back against the chair and said,

"Fine, I understand. I will find a lawyer to discuss this with you later, and also for the lawyer to interface with them."

The officer hadn't expected that Shen Yan would not only refuse to settle but also want to involve a lawyer to make the matter more troublesome.

He couldn't understand and asked Shen Yan, "Why bother?"

"I've seen this kind of thing many times. Even if you hire a lawyer, it might not be easy to sort this matter out clearly."
