112: Chapter 112 made the news
The man did not agree.
"You haven't told me who you are yet. Why should I give you the landlord's phone number?"
"I knew it, you guys are scammers, aren't you!"
Sensing something was wrong, Shen Yan quickly pulled the Store Manager back.
"Don't misunderstand, we just have the wrong person. We're leaving now!"
The man reached out his hand, blocking the two of them.
"Don't leave! You're definitely scammers. I'm calling the police right now!"
As it happened, the Store Manager didn't want to leave either; he felt the man was lying.
"Fine, call the police. I want to see exactly who is living in this house!"
Shen Yan was helpless.
He couldn't convince the Store Manager to leave, so he had to stay and help him resolve the matter.
A short while later, the police arrived.
"Who called the police? Where are the scammers?"
Hearing the question, the man pointed at the Store Manager and Shen Yan, answering, "It's these two!"
The police officer scanned the Store Manager and Shen Yan from head to toe before asking the man, "What did they scam you out of?"
The man paused.
"They... they didn't manage to scam me, but they're definitely scammers!"
The officer nodded, then turned to the Store Manager and Shen Yan. "Do you have your ID cards? Let me see them."
Shen Yan and the Store Manager shook their heads simultaneously.
Who carries an ID card when going out these days?
"Then give me your ID numbers."
Shen Yan and the Store Manager complied.
The officer checked and found that neither of them had a criminal record.
"What are you doing here?"
Shen Yan and the Store Manager told the officer the truth about the situation.
"So you came here to find someone named Tang Yu, right?"
The Store Manager nodded and said, "I suspect this man is lying. He's not the resident of this house at all."
The officer glared at the Store Manager.
"Whether he is the resident or not is for us to investigate. Blocking someone at their own door without concrete evidence like you did is very poor behavior."
The Store Manager nodded perfunctorily.
"We understand, and we won't do it again. Just hurry up and ask the landlord if this person is actually the resident."
The officer clicked his tongue and turned to the man. "Do you have your landlord's contact information?"
The man certainly did.
After he contacted the landlord, the landlord arrived quickly.
"He is indeed the resident of this house, that's correct."
Upon hearing the answer, the officer continued to ask the landlord, "Then do you know someone named Tang Yu?"
The landlord thought carefully for a moment.
"That name does sound familiar. Let me think..."
"I remember now! That girl did rent from me, but she only stayed for a month before leaving. Why? Did she break the law?"
The police didn't answer the landlord. They said to the Store Manager and Shen Yan, "Alright, you heard him. That person definitely doesn't live here. You can go now."
The Store Manager was still worried.
"But Xiao Tang isn't answering our calls. I'm afraid something has happened to her..."
The officer waved his hand dismissively.
"She's an adult. We can't open a missing person's case until an adult has been gone for forty-eight hours."
"I suggest you wait a bit longer. Maybe she'll contact you on her own after a while."
Out of anger, the Store Manager's voice grew louder.
"What do you mean 'maybe she'll contact us after a while'?"
"Didn't I already say she called us before she went missing?"
"From her tone, her current situation is very bad..."
Before he could finish, the officer interrupted him.
"That's just your personal judgment. You have no objective evidence to prove her situation is bad."
Shen Yan didn't want to watch them bicker anymore.
He tugged at the Store Manager's clothes and said, "Alright, let's not waste any more time here. Let's look elsewhere."
Knowing that further talk was just a waste of breath, the Store Manager curled his lip and said to the officer, "I will file a complaint about your irresponsible attitude!"
The officer scoffed.
"Rules are rules. Complaining won't do you any good."
Seeing that the two were about to start arguing again, Shen Yan quickly pulled the Store Manager away.
"Look at you, why bother arguing with him?"
The Store Manager was indignant. "A matter of life and death, and he talks about it so lightly. Why shouldn't I argue with him?"
Shen Yan: "...It seems you've never called the police before."
The Store Manager blinked, not knowing why Shen Yan would say that.
"What do you mean by that?"
Shen Yan laughed but didn't answer.
Next, the two went to several places to look for Tang Yu, but found nothing.
As it grew late, Shen Yan said to the Store Manager, "It's eight o'clock now. I need to go back and be with my child. Do you plan to keep looking alone, or will you come with me tomorrow?"
The Store Manager replied, "You go back. I'll look a bit more. If I really can't find her, we'll continue tomorrow."
Shen Yan nodded, said his goodbyes, and left.
He had only taken a few steps when his phone rang. It was Chen Guangke calling.
"Hello? Did something happen at the company?"
Chen Guangke's voice carried a hint of sadness.
"No... something happened to that Waitress."
Hearing this, Shen Yan frowned.
"What do you mean? Did you get in touch with Xiao Tang?"
Chen Guangke sighed and answered, "Look at the message I just sent you and you'll understand."
Shen Yan did as he was told and clicked on a news link Chen Guangke had sent him.
[Waitress commits suicide by jumping from a building after being publicly humiliated; death confirmed. Reporters are currently contacting Chen Ling, CEO of the listed company, to confirm details...]
After reading the headline, Shen Yan was stunned.
Although he had guessed Xiao Tang might have suicidal thoughts, he hadn't expected her to act on them so quickly.
Thinking of this, he remembered the Store Manager was still looking for her.
Turning around, Shen Yan ran back to where they had just been.
Fortunately, the Store Manager was still there.
"Store Manager..."
The Store Manager looked at him running back, somewhat confused.
"Why are you back? Weren't you going home to be with your child?"
Shen Yan swallowed hard and replied, "There's news about Xiao Tang..."
The Store Manager's eyes lit up, and he asked excitedly, "Did she contact you? Where is she? I'll go find her!"
Shen Yan opened his mouth and said with difficulty, "She... committed suicide."
"What?" The Store Manager doubted his own ears. "What did you say happened to her?"
Shen Yan handed over his phone.
"See for yourself."
Taking the phone, the Store Manager swiped the screen a few times.
"This news must be fake, right?"
"No, I have to go look for her again!"
