105: Chapter 105 English Dialogue
He still had classes in the afternoon, so Chen Fan had to head back to campus.
Although classes didn't really serve much purpose for Chen Fan, he still chose to avoid skipping them whenever possible.
This time, Chen Fan didn't forget to bring his book.
After forgetting his book last time, Chen Fan had started keeping it in his car, so even if he forgot, he could retrieve it at any time.
The last class of the afternoon was College English.
The English teacher was a woman in her late twenties named Sun Wanru; she wasn't exceptionally beautiful, but she dressed very stylishly.
She wore a beige knit sweater paired with a dark brown knee-length skirt, with a thin belt tied around her waist that accentuated her slender figure.
Her long hair was slightly wavy and draped over her shoulders, and a pair of small pearl earrings hung from her earlobes, swaying gently with each step.
Perhaps because she was married, she had a mature, womanly air about her.
Compared to the girls in the classroom who had just graduated from high school and entered university, and didn't really know how to dress yet, the English teacher was much more attractive to the boys in the class.
The English teacher began the lecture, and most of the students in the class started listening attentively.
Those who could get into a 985 university had decent self-discipline; they wouldn't be like the vocational college Chen Fan attended in his previous life, where a whole crowd would slump over as soon as class started.
Chen Fan, however, didn't listen attentively like the other students; instead, he started playing on his phone.
It wasn't that he didn't respect the teacher; it was mainly because there really wasn't anything for him to learn in this class.
To put it bluntly, his own English proficiency was already better than the English teacher's.
He could only play on his phone out of boredom.
In class, after finishing a section, Sun Wanru closed her textbook and scanned the people in the classroom.
"Next, I'm going to call on a student to come up and read this section."
As soon as she said this, the students who had been distracted straightened their backs.
Sun Wanru's gaze swept around the classroom and finally landed on the last row—on that boy who was looking down, his fingers swiping across a screen.
"The student in the very last row, wearing the white T-shirt and playing on his phone—you're the one."
A low ripple of laughter broke out in the classroom, and a few people turned to look at Chen Fan.
Chen Fan was having too much fun playing to realize the teacher was calling on him.
It wasn't until Wang Lei, who was sitting next to him, nudged him with his elbow.
"Man?" Chen Fan looked up, looking bewildered.
"The teacher wants you to come up and read this passage." Wang Lei lowered his voice and poked a section of English in the textbook with his finger.
Chen Fan finally realized what was happening, unhurriedly put away his phone, picked up his English book from the desk, and walked up to the podium under the gaze of the entire class.
Sun Wanru stood to the side and made room for him, her gaze carrying a hint of scrutiny—could this student who played on his phone during class actually read it?
Chen Fan lowered his head to look at the textbook and cleared his throat.
Then, fluent English flowed from his mouth.
It wasn't the kind of stumbling, word-by-word reading style; it was as smooth as if he were speaking his native language. The linking, weak forms, and intonation were all spot on.
What was even rarer was his pronunciation—it was so standard that it made people wonder if he had lived abroad; it completely lacked the lingering accent that most Chinese people had when speaking English.
The classroom fell silent, and even those boys in the back row who never looked up during class lifted their heads.
Sun Wanru's eyes lit up, and the expression on her face changed from scrutiny to pleasant surprise.
After Chen Fan finished reading, Sun Wanru immediately said, "Your pronunciation is excellent. Have you ever lived abroad?"
Holding the book, Chen Fan replied fluently in English as well, "No, I've never been abroad. I just practiced a lot on my own."
The admiration in Sun Wanru's eyes deepened. She nodded slightly and continued to ask in English, "Well, self-taught to this level is really impressive. So, a follow-up question: among all the new things you've encountered since starting university, what has impressed you the most?"
Upon hearing this, Chen Fan looked at her and then said, "Thank you, professor. What impresses me most is actually you. You're not only a great teacher, but also really beautiful and elegant."
As soon as the words left his lips, the classroom went quiet for a split second, and then erupted into a low murmur of teasing and laughter.
Sun Wanru was taken aback; she hadn't expected this tall, handsome boy in front of her to openly compliment her beauty in English.
If she were an eighteen or nineteen-year-old girl, she might have been shy. But she wasn't. At twenty-eight, and married for several years, she was well past the age of blushing just from a compliment.
However, receiving praise was always something that made one feel good. A bright smile appeared on her face.
Then she switched to Chinese and said, "Thank you for the compliment. Your English proficiency is indeed very good, but try not to play on your phone in the teacher's class next time."
"Alright, teacher, then I'll head down."
"Mhm, go ahead."
After their conversation finished, most of the students in the class showed expressions of surprise.
If it were just reading the text aloud, although not as good as Chen Fan, most people would have no problem reading it fluently.
But like Chen Fan and Sun Wanru, having a conversation in English as naturally and fluently as two foreigners—alternating questions and answers, improvising, with no prior preparation, no script—no one else in the class could do that.
