86: Chapter 86 I'll suffer a little injustice and become a godfather.
Kangqiao Supermarket was next to the canteen, and it was bustling right now.
Rows of goods were stacked high at the entrance—quilts, pillows, straw mats, basins, and thermoses, all sealed in transparent plastic bags with price tags attached.
Freshmen and their parents were crowded in front of the shelves, picking and choosing. Long lines formed at the checkout counters. Some were counting their items, while others were on the phone asking, "Did you buy the toothpaste?" It was as noisy as a wet market.
Chen Fan walked over and stood still in front of the pile of merchandise.
Unlike the freshmen nearby who kept picking things up to squeeze and compare, he simply glanced at the price tags and picked the quilt set on top—98 yuan, blue and grey striped, it looked decent.
For the basin, he chose a medium size for 12 yuan; it wasn't too big or too small, just right. The thermos was 25, a standard stainless steel shell.
He grabbed toothpaste, a toothbrush, and a towel from the shelves; they were the common types found in the supermarket, nothing fancy, just functional.
After picking out the pile, he looked back to confirm he hadn't missed anything before carrying the items to the checkout counter.
The stack of items was a bit high, so he rested his chin on the quilt on top to steady his balance and made his way through the crowd.
After paying, Chen Fan carried the pile of items back to the dormitory.
After setting the items down one by one, he started making his bed.
First, he laid out the mattress pad, pulling the four corners flat and tucking them under the mattress.
Then he unzipped the duvet cover—the set bought from the school supermarket was a zipper style, which was much easier to handle than the tie-up ones.
Chen Fan stuffed the quilt inside, grabbed two corners to shake it out, then zipped it up, finishing in a minute.
Finally, he fluffed the pillow and placed it at the head of the bed. The whole process was smooth and fluid, done in one go.
Wang Lei, on the adjacent bed, was struggling with his duvet cover.
He had been stuffing the quilt core in for ages, but one of the four corners was always empty. The more he stuffed, the messier it got, and sweat was beading on his forehead.
He looked back and saw that Chen Fan had already finished, stunned for a moment: "How are you so fast?"
"Practice makes perfect," Chen Fan replied casually. He had made his bed for four years in his past life; he could do it with his eyes closed.
Wang Lei muttered "Awesome" and continued to wrestle with his duvet cover.
Just as Chen Fan was about to sit down for a rest, the door was pushed open.
A slightly chubby boy squeezed in, carrying large and small bags, followed by a middle-aged couple.
The man was carrying a suitcase, and the woman was holding a thick, rolled-up quilt. The three of them blocked the doorway, unable to squeeze in for a moment.
"Mom, slow down, don't fall—" the boy called back, then turned around to grin at the room, "Hello everyone, hello everyone, my name is Liu Zhipeng!"
Wang Lei poked his head out from the ladder: "Come in, come in!"
Liu Zhipeng's mother followed behind. As soon as she entered, she began scrutinizing the dormitory, her eyes scanning from the ceiling to the corners, muttering: "This dorm is okay, just a bit small... Pengpeng, which bed are you sleeping in?"
Liu Zhipeng pointed to the bed near the door: "That one, Bed No. 4."
His mother immediately put down the quilt and stepped on a stool to climb up. His father quickly supported her from the side: "Take it slow, don't fall."
"It's fine, I've slept in all kinds of beds back when I was sent down to the countryside," his mother said as she climbed, her movements quite agile.
Climbing halfway, she turned back to look at the others in the room, "Kids, you must be Pengpeng's roommates, right? Please take care of our Pengpeng in the future. He's careless and forgetful, so please bear with him—"
"Mom—" Liu Zhipeng's face turned red upon hearing this, and he said urgently: "Stop it, I'll do it myself..."
"You do it yourself? Do you even know how to make a bed?" His mother glared at him and continued climbing up, meticulously smoothing out the mattress pad, tucking in all the edges tightly.
After making the bed and giving a few more instructions like "eat on time" and "don't stay up late playing games," Liu Zhipeng's parents finally left.
As soon as the door closed, Liu Zhipeng visibly breathed a sigh of relief, and his whole demeanor relaxed.
He proactively moved over to Chen Fan and Wang Lei, sat on the edge of the bed, crossed his legs, and started chatting away.
He was talkative and enthusiastic, chatting about his hometown, the college entrance exam, and why he chose this school, without pausing, quickly warming up the atmosphere.
By 3 PM, the last roommate, Zhang Yuhang, arrived.
He was a boy about 1.8 meters tall, with delicate features and a slim build. He didn't talk much, just nodding when he entered as a greeting.
But it didn't matter—with the enthusiastic Liu Zhipeng in the room, the atmosphere couldn't get cold even if it wanted to. The group chatted back and forth and soon became familiar with each other.
After chatting for a while, Chen Fan roughly figured out the situation: except for him being from Qin Province, the other three were not.
Wang Lei was from Gan Province, Liu Zhipeng from Liao Province, and Zhang Yuhang from the coal-rich Jin Province.
Getting excited, Liu Zhipeng suddenly slapped his thigh: "Hey, let's rank ourselves by age! Eldest, second, third, fourth—it'll be easier to call each other later!"
Before Wang Lei and Zhang Yuhang could respond, Chen Fan spoke up: "No need for that."
Liu Zhipeng was stunned: "Then how should we rank?"
Chen Fan leaned against the bed rail and said unhurriedly: "Let's just rank by godfather and godson. I'll take the loss and be the godfather."
The dormitory went quiet for a fraction of a second.
Wang Lei was the first to react, directly raising his middle finger: "Get lost—"
Liu Zhipeng and Zhang Yuhang also silently raised their middle fingers.
Chen Fan was actually doing it on purpose; as someone who had been reborn, he really didn't like ranking by age.
After all, it was only the first day of school, and they weren't familiar enough to call each other eldest or second.
Once they got to know each other later, let alone eldest or second, they could call him godfather and him godson, and he wouldn't mind.
However, after Chen Fan's interruption, the matter of ranking by age was set aside.
By six o'clock, Liu Zhipeng rubbed his stomach, and his stomach rumbled in response.
"Hey, are you hungry? Shall we check out the canteen?" He sat up from the bed.
Hearing this, Wang Lei immediately perked up: "Let's go, let's go! Time to taste the legendary university canteen!" He jumped down from the top bunk, hopping out without even putting his shoes on properly.
"What about Chen Fan and Yuhang?" Liu Zhipeng asked, turning back.
"Let's go." Zhang Yuhang, sparing his words, had already stood up.
"Let's go, I'm hungry too." Chen Fan got up and grabbed his phone, "And check out the college beauties while we're at it."
Hearing this, Liu Zhipeng's eyes lit up: "Oh, Chen Fan, your goal is clear!"
"I wonder if there are any beauties in our class," Wang Lei chimed in.
Unexpectedly, the quiet Zhang Yuhang spoke up: "There should be. Business Administration has a lot of girls, that's why I applied for it."
The room went quiet for a second.
Then Liu Zhipeng burst out laughing: "Damn, Yuhang, I couldn't tell!"
Wang Lei also stifled a laugh, looking Zhang Yuhang up and down: "I thought you were aloof, but it turns out you're a closet pervert?"
Zhang Yuhang didn't speak, just gave a shy chuckle.
"Alright, let's get going," Chen Fan urged, pulling the topic back.
"Let's go, let's go—"
