123: Chapter 123 Submitting a Report to the Leader
Chen Fan pondered for a moment. "For now, we are focusing primarily on mobile games. We won't be getting into large-scale games, mainly sticking to casual games like 'defend the carrot'. Later on, we will incorporate web game projects, and once the team matures in a few years, we will consider developing some PC games. However, it's still too early for all that; it depends on how the company's operations progress."
"Why not consider making large-scale games?" Wang Yuhong asked curiously.
"It's mainly because our company is just starting out; our team's technical capabilities are insufficient, and our experience isn't mature enough," Chen Fan explained. "Compared to large-scale games, casual games are technically simpler and appeal to a wider audience. As long as you have a good idea, it's the easiest way to achieve results. Once the team has accumulated enough experience, we will definitely consider large-scale games."
Upon hearing Chen Fan's words, Zhou Mingyuan nodded with satisfaction.
Although this student was young, he had a clear train of thought, took steady steps, and didn't get carried away by the success of a single game.
"Not bad," Zhou Mingyuan said, picking up his cup for a sip. "Steady and solid progress is better than anything else."
Chen Fan smiled. "It's mainly because the team doesn't have that many people yet; if you take too big a step, you might end up hurting yourself."
That was a down-to-earth remark, and both Zhou Mingyuan and Wang Yuhong laughed.
"Little Chen, Division Chief Wang and I have learned just about everything we need to know about your company's situation."
Zhou Mingyuan set down his cup, his tone becoming a bit more serious. "I have to say, being able to build a company like this at your age is truly outstanding."
He paused, then continued, "Division Chief Wang and I came here this time not only to see how your company is developing but also to see if there is any help the university can provide. But after arriving, it seems there isn't much we can offer you. For typical student entrepreneurs, the university provides some funding and workstations in the startup park, but you certainly don't need those."
"I do need them, Dean Zhou! I'm a student entrepreneur too," Chen Fan replied with a serious face.
Zhou Mingyuan was taken aback for a moment, then laughed. He pointed at Chen Fan and turned to Wang Yuhong, saying, "Look at this kid; he's making millions a month, yet he's still eyeing the university's meager startup funding and workstations."
Wang Yuhong was amused too. "Little Chen, your company's monthly revenue is more than all the projects in our startup park combined. Do you really have the nerve to fight for workstations with the seniors squeezed into cubicles?"
Chen Fan chuckled and didn't respond.
Zhou Mingyuan shook his head with a smile, his tone turning serious again. "Alright, since you are a student of our Jiao Tong University, we definitely won't forget about you. Why don't you tell us what kind of help you need from the university? Division Chief Wang and I will do our best to provide whatever we can. Even if it exceeds our authority, we will apply to higher-level leadership for you."
Chen Fan's heart stirred; he knew the opportunity had arrived.
He weighed his words carefully before speaking. "Dean Zhou, to be honest, the company's biggest problem right now isn't funding or office space—it's people."
"People?" Zhou Mingyuan raised an eyebrow.
"Yes," Chen Fan nodded. "Technical talent for game development is fine; we can recruit them from the market. But I haven't been able to find suitable talent for management. Although the company isn't big, as projects increase and the team expands, many management issues are gradually being exposed. After all, I'm just a freshman, my experience is limited, and I really do feel overwhelmed by some things."
He paused and looked at Dean Zhou. "So I wanted to ask if the university has any channels to help us connect with professional management talent? They don't have to be full-time; part-time consultants would work too. The main thing is to help us streamline the company's structure and processes."
After listening, Zhou Mingyuan didn't answer immediately but leaned back in his chair and thought for a while.
"Management talent..." He pondered for a moment and nodded. "Your request is quite spot-on. Many startups fail precisely because they focus on technology but their management doesn't keep up."
He set down his teacup and looked at Chen Fan. "How about this? There are a few channels on campus we can try. One is our MBA alumni resources. Our School of Management has many MBA alumni, and quite a few of them have reached middle or senior management positions in enterprises. They are experienced, and some are willing to give back to the university by providing guidance to projects run by their juniors. Another option is the university's 'Startup Mentor' program, which invites entrepreneurs and industry experts to serve as mentors. I can keep an eye out for suitable candidates for you."
Chen Fan's eyes lit up. "That would be greatly appreciated."
"Don't thank me just yet," Zhou Mingyuan said with a smile, waving his hand. "I'll say the ugly part upfront: I can help you find people, but whether you can retain them and utilize them well depends on you. Whether it's alumni resources or startup mentors, them being willing to help is a favor. Your company itself must be attractive enough for others to want to cooperate with you long-term."
"Understood, thank you both, leaders."
"If you have any other requests, you can bring them up together," Zhou Mingyuan said.
Chen Fan hesitated for a moment before speaking up. "There's also the issue of classes. I have to attend classes and manage the company, and sometimes it's not easy to coordinate the two. So, I was wondering if you two could give me a little flexibility regarding attendance and course scheduling?"
Zhou Mingyuan laughed. "You certainly know how to ask. The university does have a policy where student entrepreneurs can apply for flexible attendance for some courses, as long as they take the exams as normal. Later, have Counselor Shen Na help you fill out a form, and I'll speak to your professors in each subject."
"Thank you, Dean Zhou."
"Don't be in such a hurry to thank me," Zhou Mingyuan waved his hand. "Although course attendance can be handled flexibly, you must pass your exams."
"Rest assured, leaders. As long as attendance isn't an issue, I guarantee that I will rank in the top three for every subject in my exams."
Upon hearing this, Zhou Mingyuan exchanged a look with Wang Yuhong, a hint of a smile flashing in their eyes.
"As expected of a top student who scored 709 on the college entrance exam," Zhou Mingyuan said with a smile. "Since you are so confident, I won't say anything more."
He took his phone out of his pocket and opened his contacts. "Take down my contact information. If you have any problems that Xiao Shen cannot resolve, you can come directly to me."
"Understood." Chen Fan quickly took out his phone to save the number.
"Save mine as well." Wang Yuhong also took out his phone. "Although I am not a leader from the School of Management, if you have any difficulties, you can come to me as well."
"Understood, Division Chief Wang." Chen Fan saved another number.
Zhou Mingyuan stood up and looked around the conference room, his gaze finally landing on Chen Fan. "Little Chen, keep up the good work. Whatever the university can do to help, we will do our best. When you achieve results, it reflects well on us too."
Chen Fan nodded. "Thank you, Dean Zhou, thank you, Division Chief Wang."
After exchanging contact information with the two leaders, Zhou Mingyuan raised his wrist to check the time.
"It's getting late. We'll end here for today, and Division Chief Wang and I will head back to the university first."
He turned to look at Counselor Shen Na. "Xiao Shen, are you coming with us, or...?"
"I still have some things to discuss with Chen Fan. Dean Zhou, you and Division Chief Wang should go back first."
"Alright, then the two of us will be leaving first."
"Let me see you two off," Chen Fan said hurriedly.
