41: Chapter 41 The College Entrance Examination Ends
The first subject was Chinese, from 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM.
The exam hall was on the second floor of the Third Teaching Building, and it didn't take much effort to find it.
Chen Fan found his seat—the third row by the window.
8:45 AM.
The invigilators came in, one man and one woman.
The woman carried the exam record sheet, and the man held the sealed test paper bag.
The female invigilator cleared her throat: "Everyone, please place your admission ticket and ID card on the top left corner of your desk."
There was a rustling sound.
8:55 AM.
The test paper bag was opened.
The female invigilator began handing out scratch paper, while the male invigilator handed out the answer sheets.
Chen Fan took the answer sheet, wrote his name and admission ticket number on it, then put down his pen and waited.
The breathing of those around him seemed to grow lighter.
The sound of someone swallowing was exceptionally clear.
Compared to the nervous expressions of the other candidates in the exam hall, Chen Fan appeared very relaxed and comfortable.
Once he got the test paper, Chen Fan looked at the composition section, which provided three pieces of material for a self-titled essay.
After a quick glance, Chen Fan turned to the first page and began answering.
At 11:00 AM, with half an hour left before the first Chinese exam ended, Chen Fan raised his hand.
"Teacher, I'm handing in my paper."
The invigilator was stunned for a moment, walked over, and said in a low voice: "Don't you want to check it again?"
"No need."
She glanced at his paper, then at the clock on the wall, and finally nodded, taking the paper.
Chen Fan picked up the transparent file bag on his desk and got up to leave.
After exiting the exam hall, Chen Fan went downstairs to wait.
About twenty minutes later, Chen Fan saw Lin Xi's figure walking out of the teaching building.
"Lin Xi, over here." He quickly called out to her.
Hearing this, Lin Xi looked in the direction of the voice, and upon seeing it was Chen Fan, a happy smile appeared on her face.
She then walked quickly toward Chen Fan.
"How did you do?"
"Not bad, how about you?"
"You know what I'm capable of, right? It's definitely no problem."
"Bragging~"
The two chatted as they walked toward the school gate.
Lin Xi's expression changed instantly.
"... My mom and dad."
Chen Fan followed her gaze—among the parents outside the school gate stood a middle-aged couple, craning their necks to look this way.
The man had regular features, was wearing a dark gray jacket, and looked to be in his forties; he stood straight with a steady gaze, and at a glance, he looked like someone who had spent many years in the government.
The woman looked under forty, with fair skin, eyebrows and eyes seven or eight parts similar to Lin Xi's, a gentle temperament, and still retained her charm.
A red cheongsam highlighted her good figure, causing the male parents around them to frequently and unconsciously look over.
Before he could react, the couple had already spotted Lin Xi and walked over quickly.
"Xixi!"
Mother Lin had a smile on her face, but her gaze had already landed on Chen Fan, scanning him quickly from head to toe.
Father Lin walked behind, his expression unreadable, but his eyes also lingered on Chen Fan for two seconds.
He was quite tall, and the clothes he was wearing were all designer brands—not the fake kind—which suggested his family background was quite good.
Mother Lin withdrew her gaze, the smile on her face deepening slightly.
Father Lin didn't speak, just took one extra look, then looked away.
Lin Xi braced herself and went up to them: "Dad, Mom, why are you here?"
"To pick you up, of course."
Mother Lin smiled, her gaze drifting back to Chen Fan, "Is this your classmate?"
Lin Xi opened her mouth, just about to introduce him, when Chen Fan had already taken half a step forward and bowed slightly:
"Hello, Uncle and Auntie. I'm Chen Fan, Lin Xi's classmate."
Mother Lin smiled and nodded: "Hello."
Lin Xi's father looked at Chen Fan with a hint of scrutiny and asked: "How did you do on the first subject, young man?"
Chen Fan smiled: "Not bad, scoring 140 shouldn't be a problem."
Father Lin raised an eyebrow: "You're quite confident, young man."
Lin Xi quickly interjected from the side: "Dad, Chen Fan is the top student in our entire grade. He scored 699 points on the last mock exam."
Hearing this, a flash of surprise appeared in Father Lin's eyes, and the scrutiny in his gaze faded a bit.
Mother Lin smiled and smoothed things over from the side: "Alright, alright, let's not stand here in the sun. Chen Fan, where do you live? Do you want Auntie to give you a ride?"
"That would be great, thank you, Auntie. I live in Zijin Garden."
Mother Lin's eyes brightened: "Zijin Garden? That's perfect, it's the same residential complex as us. Get in."
Under Father Lin's somewhat unfriendly gaze, Chen Fan followed them to where Father Lin had parked.
Father Lin's car was a black Buick Excelle, worth about a hundred thousand yuan.
After getting in, Mother Lin took the initiative to sit in the front passenger seat, letting Chen Fan and Lin Xi sit in the back.
"Little Chen, which building do you live in?" Mother Lin asked, turning her head.
"Building 5, Unit 2, 803."
"That's quite close, just one building away. Feel free to come over and play with Xixi when you have time after the exams are over."
As soon as Mother Lin finished speaking, a few somewhat deliberate coughs came from the driver's seat.
"Okay, Auntie."
"By the way, Little Chen, which university do you plan to apply to?"
"Most likely Chang'an Jiaotong University."
Mother Lin's eyes brightened: "Xian is great. Our Xixi will also be applying to universities in Xian. As a girl, you can look after her then."
The coughing from the driver's seat sounded twice more, more obvious than before.
In the back seat, Lin Xi had almost buried her face into the car seat.
Chen Fan glanced at the driver's seat, seeing only the back of Father Lin's head and the hand resting on the steering wheel.
He withdrew his gaze and smiled: "Don't worry, Auntie."
After driving for half an hour, the car arrived at the underground garage of Zijin Garden.
Chen Fan said goodbye to Lin Xi's family.
"Little Chen, when you go to the exam tomorrow afternoon, go with Xixi. Your Uncle Lin and I will just drop you both off."
"No need, Auntie, I've already troubled you enough."
"You child, it's on the way, no trouble at all."
"Then thank you, Auntie and Uncle Lin."
Father Lin sat in the car, his hands on the steering wheel, looking straight ahead, with no expression on his face.
But this time he didn't cough—anyway, his wife had already made the decision, and he couldn't refuse.
...
For the following exams, Chen Fan rode in Father Lin's car to the exam hall.
Chen Fan had initially refused, but Mother Lin insisted on taking him, so there was no choice but to agree.
With the end of the final English exam, Chen Fan's high school career officially came to an end.
June 8th, in the afternoon, the final English exam.
Chen Fan finished writing his composition, put down his pen, and looked out the window.
The sun was very bright, just like on the first day.
He handed in his paper early, walked out of the exam hall, went to his storage point to retrieve his wallet and phone, and then waited outside the exam hall for Lin Xi to come out.
As the exam time ended, the candidates filed out of the exam hall.
Among them was Lin Xi.
