23: Chapter 23 Yan Fangfang's Choice
The younger brother said disdainfully, "Isn't it just a young kid and a bunch of old people? They're either old or young; what do we have to be afraid of?"
"Why are you so foolish? Why do you believe whatever others say?" Yan Fangfang rubbed her head, replying speechlessly.
"Hmm? Does the boss mean they might not be telling the truth?" the younger brother asked.
"It's definitely true, but whether there's any exaggeration, I don't know," Yan Fangfang replied.
The younger brother seemed to understand, yet not fully.
Yan Fangfang, meanwhile, was worried about how to investigate the base.
According to what the few people said, those inside the base never came out. One could go in, but upon entering, they would be quarantined for 15 days, making it difficult to leave. If they sent people to attack, the ten-meter-high wall made it impossible to break in.
Yan Fangfang couldn't think of a better solution for a while.
"Holy hell! Liu Qing, you're not dead!" After the three retreated, they were locked in a room, and to their surprise, Liu Qing, who had just been dragged out by the beautiful boss, was actually alive.
"Of course I'm not dead! Deng Wen, were you hoping I'd die?" Having narrowly escaped death, Liu Qing's habit of being a smart aleck resurfaced.
"What are you saying? How could that be! At that time, we thought you were in grave danger after being dragged out, and we were all worried sick for you!" Deng Wen said.
"Oh, please! You were probably scared to death yourself, weren't you? Worried sick for me? Where's your shame?" Liu Qing continued to retort.
"Alright, alright. We're all on the same side, stop arguing!" Director Xue interjected.
Liu Qing glared at Deng Wen and stopped talking. Suddenly, he noticed Director Xue's pants were wet and asked,
"Director Xue, did you wet your pants?"
"I... you..." Director Xue instantly regretted it.
Why mediate? He shouldn't have! This kind of smart aleck should be beaten to death! It's truly infuriating that this person didn't die just now; it's an outrage!
Director Xue snorted unhappily and ignored him. He found a spot by himself, sat down, and rested.
"What's wrong with Director Xue?" Liu Qing asked Deng Wen.
Deng Wen gave him a disdainful look, said nothing, and also found a place to rest.
Midnight.
Everyone was asleep.
The October night already carried a hint of coolness.
Accompanied by the faint rustling of leaves, it seemed as if a large number of objects were converging on this isolated small courtyard from all directions.
"Sister Yan, wake up! We're in big trouble!"
A younger brother walked to Yan Fangfang's room door, gently knocking and calling out.
The door quickly opened, and Yan Fangfang, dressed revealingly, walked out of the room and asked,
"What's going on?"
"Sister Yan, a large number of zombies are approaching us. They probably sensed the scent we left behind during the day," the younger brother replied.
"Roughly how many?"
"They're densely packed, countless!" The younger brother swallowed, answering.
"Then we can only break through. Go wake everyone up; we need to leave quickly by car." Yan Fangfang quickly made up her mind.
Including the four doctors they had just captured during the day, they were only 11 people in total.
The zombies were still far from the small courtyard, and the few people quickly got into two cars and drove west.
The next morning.
When the first ray of sunlight appeared on the horizon, the zombies had almost completely disappeared. The few people got out of the cars, their bodies exhausted, and leaned against the front of the vehicles, watching the sunrise with a sense of loss.
It wasn't until the sunlight gradually intensified that Yan Fangfang gathered everyone and said,
"Brothers, hiding like this every day isn't a solution. Before, there was no choice; it was to survive here. But now it's different; we've received reliable information. There's an underground base in Binjiang Park, protected by a ten-meter-high wall that zombies can't get through. The fortress has countless supplies and quite a few people. I thought about it all night and realized that relying on just a few of us, it's impossible to break in. However, I have another idea, which is to surrender."
Everyone looked at each other, finding it unbelievable.
"No, beautiful boss. Why don't we go to the Qinghe Shelter? It's only about 50 kilometers from here to the Qinghe Shelter; we can get there in an hour or so by car. Why go surrender to that underground base?" Liu Qing's habit of being a smart aleck started again.
Who do you think you are, to speak up? The other three just watched him silently, neither mocking nor encouraging, and showed no expression.
However, everyone also realized that the beautiful boss was aloof and sexy, but not bloodthirsty. Otherwise, Liu Qing would have died several times already. So, they were less apprehensive about speaking up.
Yan Fangfang ignored him and looked at his brothers, continuing to say,
"What do you all think?"
"Sister Yan. Your decision is our decision. Wherever you go, we go!" A man stood out and said loudly.
"Alright, it's settled then! Haozi, leave that car for these doctors. The rest of us will take this car." Sister Yan commanded.
"Okay, Sister Yan!" Haozi replied.
Haozi was the younger brother who had followed Sister Yan to interrogate the doctors today.
The four doctors were bewildered; were they being released?
Deng Wen stared at the car keys Haozi placed in his hand, stunnedfor a long time.
By the time the few people reacted, Yan Fangfang and her group had already driven off.
Qinghe Emergency Shelter.
"Director Xue, you've returned at the perfect time. We're short on doctors here; it's precisely when we need more hands," a middle-aged female doctor said happily.
"Doctor Ding, do you know which leader is in charge here in Qinghe? I have important information to report," Director Xue replied.
Inside the command center, a white-haired man in his 50s said,
"Doctor Xue, I've roughly understood the situation you've reported. If necessary, I'll send someone to communicate. However, for now, I believe we should focus on treating the victims and eliminating zombies. As for other matters, as you can see, we don't have enough manpower at the moment, so let's postpone them for now."
"Liao Team Leader is right," Xue Miaoshuang replied.
...
Binjiang Park Underground Base.
Quarantine Zone.
"You are Oriental Chen?" Yan Fangfang asked.
"Yes. Do you know me?" Oriental Chen asked.
"I heard about you. But you're even more handsome than I imagined," Yan Fangfang said with a charming smile.
"Oh? I suppose you heard about me from a few doctors, didn't you?" Oriental Chen chuckled, unaffected by her flattery.
"It seems you're very smart." Yan Fangfang was slightly surprised and said admiringly.
"There are many more advantages you'll discover slowly," Oriental Chen boasted shamelessly.
"I'll be waiting to see." Yan Fangfang smiled gracefully.
"Then you all can rest well here. Someone will let you out after the quarantine ends."
After saying that, Oriental Chen turned to leave.
"Aren't you going to ask how those doctors are doing?" Yan Fangfang pressed.
"Oh? What did you do to them?" Oriental Chen cooperatively asked.
"Haha! I killed them all," Yan Fangfang replied with a laugh, making it hard to tell if she was serious.
"Is that so? Then I should thank you?" Oriental Chen also smiled slyly and turned to leave.
In reality, Xiao Lin had already told him after the doctors arrived at the Qinghe Shelter.
Therefore, Yan Fangfang's lie had no effect on Oriental Chen.
"Interesting!"
Watching Oriental Chen's retreating back, Yan Fangfang muttered to herself, deep in thought.
...
Two months passed in a flash.
To date, the virus has been raging for five months.
The arrival of winter has led to a clear north-south polarization in the spread of the virus across Huaguo.
Winter in the north is cold and dry, and the disappearance of mosquitoes has significantly slowed down the spread of the virus. Official teams, relying on their strong firepower, began to counterattack the cities. Due to a lack of supplies, people also had to spontaneously form many exploration teams, roaming the streets and alleys of the cities.
The situation in the south was completely different. Many emergency shelters around cities continuously shrank in size, eventually disappearing, due to constant zombie attacks and persistently high infection rates.
The surviving people had no choice but to migrate north, leading to most areas in the south becoming human exclusion zones.
Binjiang City is located on the southeastern coast; even in December winter, the outdoor temperature remains around 15 degrees Celsius. Of the six emergency shelters around the city, only one remains.
