59: Chapter 59: Speaker attacked

More than ten days passed in a flash.

December 31, 2054, New Year's Eve.

The Council Building, Speaker's office, in the capital of Hua Nation, Jingdu City.

"Old Yan, sit," the Speaker said.

"Alright!"

"Old Yan, do you think it's time to summarize the emergency plan?" the Speaker asked.

"I think it's about time. After so many days, all the points that needed to be considered have basically been covered," Yan Zhengping replied.

"Mm!" The Speaker nodded.

"Old Yan, we are old comrades. Tell me the truth. Do you really know who revealed the information to us?" the Speaker asked.

"Baili, I really don't know," Yan Zhengping denied.

"Really?" The Speaker was skeptical.

"Really!" Yan Zhengping stared, answering with conviction.

"Alright, pretend I didn't ask," the Speaker leaned back in his chair, saying indifferently.

"Baili, Jingdu has a large population, and it's not a solution to keep it under martial law indefinitely. After the New Year, the temperature will gradually rise, and there might be chaos then," Yan Zhengping changed the subject.

"Old Yan, I've thought about this problem. But the timing isn't right now. If the Council withdraws from Jingdu, it will greatly affect the confidence of various regions in resisting the virus. Moreover, the Longteng Base in the suburbs of Jingdu is already under construction and will be completed in about two more months. Don't worry, nothing will happen," the Speaker said.

"Alright," Yan Zhengping said.

"Old Yan, with the seven-day New Year's holiday, you should go back and see your family. I won't keep you, we'll see each other after the holiday," the Speaker said.

"Alright, see you after the holiday."

It was 9:30 PM on Liberty Avenue, where the Council Building was located.

The car drove slowly, the Speaker sat in the back, resting with his eyes closed.

"Clang~" The leading vehicle made a loud noise and flew off the road.

"Screech~" The following vehicles quickly braked.

"Clang~" Another car was struck and sent flying.

"What's going on?" The Speaker was startled awake and asked.

"Speaker, we're under attack, please sit tight!" The driver finished speaking, turned the wheel sharply, floored the accelerator, and sped forward.

"Wang, drive to the military department!" The Speaker ordered.

"Yes, Speaker!" Wang replied, but his tone was a little strange.

"You're not Wang?" Speaker Bai Li Ji immediately felt something was wrong.

But before he could even get up, he felt a blur before his eyes and passed out.

Two hours later, the car drove back to the military department.

At this time, the military department was already in chaos.

Due to the tight power supply, traffic lights and civilian surveillance on the roads had long been shut down. The military department's security system did not cover the entire Jingdu, but was only deployed in a few key security locations. Therefore, a large number of personnel could only be dispatched to conduct a carpet search.

"The Commander is back!" A Soldier came in to report.

In the Central Military Region, everyone referred to Baili Ji by his title of Commander of the Central Military Region, and did not call him Speaker. This was also an unwritten rule.

"What? Where is he?" A military officer shouted.

"He's already entered the Military Region and is almost at the Commander-in-Chiefs office," the Soldier replied.

"Good! That's good! Let's go out and greet him," the military officer said and ran out.

Soon, the car stopped in front of the Commander-in-Chiefs office building.

All the waiting military officers and Soldiers stood at attention and saluted.

The driver got out, opened the rear door, and Baili Ji stepped out of the car.

"Commander, are you alright?" The military officer rushed forward and asked hurriedly.

"I'm fine, everyone has worked hard, go back and rest," Baili Ji said, then walked into the building.

The military officers and Soldiers also stopped watching and went back to their respective duties.

Inside an interrogation room, Wang Yang sat in the interrogation chair.

"Wang Yang. You need to clearly explain, word for word, where the car went during those two hours in the middle," the interrogating military officer said, his tone not very strict, but more persuasive.

"Yes! After I discovered the attack, I was worried about being surrounded, so I quickly broke away from the convoy and kept driving straight along Liberty Avenue. The Speaker asked me to drive directly back to the military department, so when I reached Linjing Street, I turned south. But I hadn't gone far when two cars drove out from both sides of the road, heading against traffic towards me. I had no choice but to make a quick decision and turn the car into Lijia Alley. That's how I managed to shake them off by winding through the city and drive the car back."

As the driver Wang Yang described the situation at the time, the interrogator responsible for recording quickly took notes.

"Did you notice the license plate numbers of the other vehicles?"

"No! The car was going too fast, I didn't dare to be distracted."

"Since the other party was prepared, and it sounds like they were deliberately forcing you to take certain routes, how were you still able to successfully break out of their encirclement?" The interrogator asked.

"I think they might not be locals from Jingdu; they're unfamiliar with the routes," Wang Yang thought for a moment and replied.

"Alright, that concludes today's interrogation for now, you can go back. We will verify all the information you've provided, and we hope you haven't concealed anything."

"I wouldn't dare!"

"Also, your work will be temporarily suspended during this period, and others will take over for you. Before the matter is thoroughly investigated, we hope you can stay at home, not go out, and not contact anyone. To avoid complicating the issue, we hope for your understanding and cooperation."

"Alright, I understand!"
