30: Chapter 30 Yan Fangfang's Regret and Compromise

In just over ten seconds, the situation took a sharp turn for the worse.

Of the five-person team, three were severely wounded.

At this moment, Yan Fangfang felt some regret.

But she had no time for further consideration.

She quickly sought cover and observed calmly.

A large zombie was walking towards them, pushing aside all obstacles as it went. The cars pushed to the sides made clanging sounds.

"Chirp~."

Yan Fangfang quickly fired her Laser Gun, shooting at the large zombie's head.

Unfortunately, the laser hit the large zombie's forehead, emitting a puff of green smoke, but did not cause much damage.

The large zombie was getting closer and closer.

Currently, only two people still had combat capability. It was impossible for two people to carry three severely wounded teammates away.

Yan Fangfang felt a bit desperate and at a loss.

At this moment, "Chirp chirp chirp" gunshots came from a distance, and all firepower was directed at the large zombie.

The arrivals were the three squads brought by Yuan Kui.

The continuous lasers erupting from the Laser Guns converged into a single point, creating instant high temperatures. In less than 3 seconds, the large zombie's head was directly penetrated.

After the large zombie fell, the few people quickly divided tasks, helping the three severely wounded teammates retreat. The others guarded on both sides, eliminating the scattered zombies that rushed over.

...

Underground Base Medical Zone.

The three were receiving treatment in the treatment room.

Yan Fangfang leaned against the wall outside the treatment room, head down, tears streaming down her face.

Oriental Chen quickly walked over, looked at Zhang Yuankui beside him, and anxiously asked:

"How is the situation?"

Zhang Yuankui replied:

"It should be a fracture. The impact force was quite strong, but their lives are saved."

Oriental Chen let out a sigh of relief.

However, such an incident occurring during the Guard Team's first outdoor mission greatly affected morale.

Oriental Chen looked down at the disheveled Yan Fangfang, whose tears were streaming down her face. He wanted to get angry, but for some reason, he couldn't. He calmly said:

"Yan Fangfang, stand up!"

Yan Fangfang ignored him, still hanging her head, silently sobbing.

"Yan Fangfang, are you taking advantage of me?"

Seeing Yan Fangfang ignore him, Oriental Chen's temper started to rise.

"If you want to die, go die far away, don't die here!"

"Why are you yelling? What does my death have to do with you?" Yan Fangfang also got angry, stood up and retorted loudly. After speaking, she wiped away the tears on her face with the back of her hand.

"Let me tell you! If it weren't for your special identity, I wouldn't have sent people to save you! It doesn't matter if you die, but please don't implicate others if you do!" Oriental Chen pointed at her, gritting his teeth and speaking fiercely.

"You! Fine, fine, fine! You all use my identity against me. What's wrong with my identity? Do you think I want this? If possible, I'd rather be born into an ordinary family! Wuwuwu~" Yan Fangfang's emotions collapsed. After speaking, she squatted down and started crying again, wuwuwu.

With her personality, under normal circumstances, she would have long since exploded in anger, turned around, and left. But this time was different. This time, it was indeed due to her own reasons that three teammates were severely wounded. Moreover, Oriental Chen had a special identity. If she simply left, it would mean that any potential cooperation between them would completely fall through.

So, for both public and private reasons, she could not leave.

Oriental Chen was probably the first person in a long time to speak loudly to her; even her father hadn't. What was even more frustrating was that she had to endure being scolded.

Several reasons combined led her to squat down and cry uncharacteristically after suffering such a grievance.

"You!"

Oriental Chen was a little flustered seeing this scene.

When a woman cries, even a god of slaughter has to back away.

After a minute of silence, Oriental Chen sighed and said in a gentler tone:

"Yan Fangfang! From now on, you are no longer a member of the base's Guard Team, and you are also forbidden from going outside. After your three subordinates recover from their injuries, you can leave together. This place is too small for a great Buddha like you!"

After speaking, Oriental Chen turned and left.

"Oriental Chen! Oriental Chen, stop!"

Seeing Oriental Chen leave, Yan Fangfang hurriedly stood up and shouted loudly.

But Oriental Chen ignored her. He didn't look back, and his steps didn't stop.

...

At this time, many zombies had gathered outside the base, fiercely impacting the perimeter wall gate.

This was the first time the base had been attacked.

To prevent the gate from being damaged, the Guard Team members were divided into four groups, guarding the east, south, west, and north entrances respectively.

Seeing Oriental Chen walk over, Ling Zhenhai, who was on duty at the East Gate, walked over and shouted loudly:

"Boss, why did you come over?"

He had no choice but to shout. The huge gate was booming from the impacts. Coupled with the roars of a large number of zombies, the combined sound vibrated people's eardrums painfully.

"It's nothing, just came to take a look. Let's go up the wall." Oriental Chen also shouted loudly.

Ling Zhenhai nodded and followed Oriental Chen up the wall from the side staircase reserved for it.

The wind on the wall was very cold and strong.

The few people standing on the wall appeared very small.

Looking down, dozens of zombies had gathered at the entrance. They kept pushing inwards, clawing and baring their teeth. Their appearance was like a group of hungry people scrambling for food. There were also a few scattered zombies attempting to climb up the wall, but none succeeded.

Oriental Chen was not flustered, watching quietly. From time to time, he would also look into the distance.

Ling Zhenhai and the others followed beside him, saying nothing, just standing.

"Hoo~"

Ten minutes later, Oriental Chen took a deep breath. He took out his phone from his pocket and dialed:

"Xiao Lin, begin."

Then, he hung up the phone.

"Boss, what is this...?" Ling Zhenhai asked in confusion.

"It's nothing, just watch." Oriental Chen did not explain, simply replying.

Ling Zhenhai also said no more, waiting quietly.

In about one or two minutes, the situation outside the wall changed.

The zombies no longer crashed into the gate but ran around chaotically, creating a chaotic scene. However, due to the high wall and dim light, it was unclear what was happening.

Soon after, the zombies successively lay down and stopped moving. In five minutes, the scene became completely silent.

"Alright, let's go back." Oriental Chen said.

Ling Zhenhai's face was filled with shock and confusion.

What's going on?

What happened?

Why did all the zombies die?

"Boss, can I go out and take a look?" Ling Zhenhai hesitated for a moment but still asked.

"Oh? Sure, go ahead." Oriental Chen replied, then returned underground on his own.

Ling Zhenhai and the others opened the gate and walked out.

Nothing! There was nothing!

Except for some faint scratches and secretions visible on the ground and walls, and a lingering rotten smell in the air, there was nothing else. It was as if the zombies had never been there.

"Where are the zombies?"

Everyone felt confused.

The Guard Team members in the other three directions were also like this.

What happened?

Why did all the zombies disappear for no reason?

Everyone looked at each other, all with puzzled expressions.

Oriental Chen returned to his office, and Yan Fangfang was waiting at the door.

No one could enter the office except Oriental Chen.

"Where did you go?" Yan Fangfang asked.

"What? Miss Yan, do I need to report to you where I go?" Oriental Chen retorted.

"Ah? No, no need!" Yan Fangfang cowered, hurriedly waving her hands.

She had no choice but to cower! Oriental Chen had the antigen, a life-saving medicine that could save countless lives. Moreover, if they could cooperate, it could bring considerable political capital to her family. Therefore, Oriental Chen absolutely could not be offended. For this reason, after a complex ideological struggle, Yan Fangfang chose to humble herself.

Although she was somewhat arrogant and had a bit of a pampered young lady's temper, it was undeniable that she had a naive heart that wanted to save lives and help the injured. If it were solely for the family's benefit, she might very well choose not to compromise and then leave. But to allow more people to survive, she had to make sacrifices.

Perhaps, a person's growth truly begins with their first moment of humility.
